I have used all local airports Jacksonville, Orlando, Sanford, and Daytona Beach. I have been picked up at all times of the day to accommodate flights and even Christmas eve at 10 pm. Rides run by Guy has been a tremendous service to my family and we have been able to count on their services at all times. They are always early with clean town cars or a van if needed. If you've never crossed a river on a ferry you're really missing out on an experience that can't be…read moreduplicated and could be considered one for the "bucket list" especially if the ferry is more than a century old and crosses a one mile section for the famous the St. John's River just north of Lake George. The ferry's east dock is located in the Gateway Fish Camp in Fruitland, Florida. The west dock is at the end of the dirt Salt Springs Road in the Ocala National Forest. I had no idea this ferry existed until today while driving up to Crescent City, it was not only my curiosity that drove me down the sandy road to experience this ten minute ten dollar trip across the choppy waters of the St. John's River it was the many memories I still cherish from my childhood of frequently riding the old ferries in Louisiana with my dad. There is something about this almost forgotten mode of transportation that still brings a smile to my face and a unexplainable joy within. As we left the dock we step out of the truck and walked around the small battered barge that's barely large enough to fit more than one or two vehicles at a time on to feel the wind in our faces and the spray from the river as the century old motorized tug pushed us effortlessly towards the seven miles of undeveloped sandy road through the National Forest ahead. There are rusty handrails on both sides but the front and back of the barge remains unobstructed so your parking brake and two battered piece of wood under your tires keeps your vehicle stable. The sixty-five horsepower Diesel engine that supplies the power to this antique ferry is an upgrade if you consider this ferry was first powered by humans being its original purpose was to transport passengers including Confederate troops during the Civil War, today's cargo consist mostly of curious tourist from all corners of the world, the ferry's crossings number around fifteen hundred a year, with those numbers and the ferry's remote location I am sure the locals rarely cross at this location, but as strange as it may sound this is still the most efficient route you can choose the drive around is an additional 50 miles to cross the river on bridges in Palatka to the north or Astor to the south. There seems to be a following for these old ferries much as there are roller coaster enthusiast although I haven't heard of any clubs specifically for ferry-boat enthusiast but it wouldn't surprise me if some exist.
