This store saved my sweet behind today! First, nearly nothing is open in Munich on Sunday. As many…read moretimes as I've been here, it is a phenomenon I can't comprehend! But DM-Drogerie was walking distance from my hotel and open until fairly late. One of my bags had been misdirected, and unfortunately it was the one with all my makeup and a few other personal effects. I have a presentation tomorrow for work and didn't want to show up barefaced! The store is large with good selection of everything I needed from makeup and pantyhose to a shoe shine kit and toothpaste. Prices seemed pretty much in line with what I would have expected back in the US. Note: this location is a little tough to find. It's downstairs near the entrance to the subway station, so just look for an escalator down and follow the signs.

So instead, I enjoyed my time inside the dm, playing with lipstick colors and going gaga over their selection of travel size bottles of just about everything imaginable. Not many shack food options here (maybe they were upstairs but I didn't venture up there) but magazines, makeup, hair care, skin care, they have it all. Really clean store, too. Saves the day!…read more Despite my best wishes and most humble efforts to rid myself of the cold I picked up somewhere between Newark Liberty Airport and MUC, the cold was sticking. Boxes of tissue, cough drops, gallons of healing tea (or I hope so, all the labels were in German). Coupled with jetlag, well...things were starting to get ugly. I was pointed in the direction of the International Pharmacy near Marineplatz. It, like other German pharmacies, is very clean and orderly. And ONLY sells medicine. This is not like in the States where you can buy anything from pantyhose to hairdryers to whatever else you might dream up. MEDICINE things only. And face creams...haven't quite figured that out. I'll report back. But, my research leads me to this advice for foreign travelers unaware of German pharmacies... Protocol: 1. Enter pharmacy. 2. Wait in line. 3. Speak with assistant or pharmacist, describe your ailment. 4. They will pick something out for you. 5. They will ask you several health questions as required by law. (do you take such and such, which will react conversely with this, etc) 6. They sell you the drugs. Then you go home, you down that Nyquil with your last bit of effort, watch The Notebook through half-glazed eyes, fall asleep for 10.5 hours and wake up a new woman! Ok, well that part is not in the typical protocol, but there you have it. I finally got down on my knees and begged the sleep-inducing gods to bless me, and they did so here. At Rathaus-Apotheke.

They order more for me and said it would be ready by 16:00. It was there on time. The salesperson (very nice lady) also had all my tax free paperwork for Global Blue ready. She even improved the date code of the bottles by checking around for other suppliers in the area. Not many people would take these extra steps after I agreed to buy an earlier date code and paid and left to shop until I returned at 16:00 for the pickup.

DM to the rescue. This small shop would be similar to a CVS or Walgreens in the US. They have lots of personal care items, some cosmetics and a bunch of over-the-counter medications. And yes, two shelves of razors. I found a good replacement and it was amazingly only €3. Lots of more expensive options but this one was perfect. You can find anything from household cleaning and washing supplies, baby supplies, food items, cosmetics and hygiene products for men and women, and on and on it goes. Prices are pretty decent and the choice is not extensive however not bad either. This particular one is over two floors. There is also a section at this one for stationery and office / schools supplies and electronics including cd/DVD etc. I have been here a few times and it's convenient for me.

It also has a wine selection! Both times the cashiers have been quick, efficient, and friendly - even though I speak no German and they spoke little (or no) English. Really, all you need is a smile and some cash - oh, and you won't need much as the prices are great! :)

There's some classic rock, some electronic and some contemporary pop music. Also, the bargain DVDs (buy 3 or 4, get 1 free) are a great way to stock up on movies to watch with your friends on a rainy weekend. The other departments are fine, too. There are office supplies and household chemicals in the basement, and skin care and perfume on the first floor. No need to take the car as the shop is just a few steps from Karlsplatz and central station.
