a sign for dixie's fish and chicken

Visited her on Dec 7 2023. I got the Calabasas po'boy sandwich and a small coleslaw. Food was hot and fresh. Service needs some work. Food was made to go when I wanted it for eat in. Facility needs some detail cleaning. Windows really need some work inside and out.

Went to Dixie's in Newton with my family on Friday 8.18.23. Red flag upon entering was the smell of a fish market and cigarette smoke. It didn't appear to be a clean place at all. We head to the counter anyway and my husband and I give each other the look of "Are you sure you want to eat here?" My husband and I had been excited about trying the baby flounder and calabash shrimp after seeing the pictures and reviews online. When our meals arrived they looked delicious appeared to be fried, but there was no crispy texture at all. The food was soggy at best. We paid an extra .40 cent for my son to have cheese on his hamburger, but there was no cheese. My other son enjoyed his hotdog and they all liked the shakes. After arriving back home, a couple of hours later our stomach's began to hurt. FOOD POISONING! I am writing this review on Saturday 8.19.23 at 2:35 p.m. and I am just now able to sit up after this all night/day ordeal. It was $59.95 for all that. We won't be back. I blame myself self because last year I got a cheeseburger at the drive thru and it was raw when I got home with it. But I gave a second chance and we won't be back for obvious reasons.

London style fish and chips (with fried squash filling in for the chips)
Suzanne S.

Dixie's Fish and Chicken made me a happily surprised lady yesterday! I've seen this restaurant in Troutman, but have never tried it, so when I found one in Newton, I decided to give it a go. So glad I did! It was so easy to order, I did it through the yelp app, paid with my CC online and went through the drive through for pick up. So easy and virtually contactless. They got my order 100% correct and included condiments, napkins and flatware without my having to ask. The food was really good. I had the London Style Fish and Chips, but subbed the fried squash for the french fries. It was a LOT of fried food, but really good. The fish was a tiny bit fishy smelling (not the fish itself, but the aroma of the take out box in the bag. It was good, but the batter could have used a few more minutes in the fryer since it was gummy in places. The squash was cut on a bias so that it had a bigger surface area exposed to the breading for maximum crispiness and flavor. So darned good! My favorite item on my plate though was the cole slaw! And I am not a big lover of cole slaw, but this was fresh and sweet like Chick fil a's used to be! I'd go back to get that cole slaw for my next family gathering it was so good! If you haven't tried them, make sure you do. I will definitely be back.

Calabash Shrimp and Baby Flounder combo
Ryan B.

Had the Calabash Shrimp and Baby Flounder combo. So much food in the basket for around $10. Everything tasted fresh and the service was pretty decent for a busy Saturday night. Inside was very clean and the staff was friendly as well. Definitely will be going back again!

over $5 for the smallest shredded lettuce salad such a disappointment. I can buy a tomato and a head of lettuce for basically nothing at the store wtf

NOT a Carolina burger (what I ordered)
Kerry B.

This is a sit-down restaurant trying to be a fast food place (or is it the other way around)? They need to pick one and do it right. I placed an online order. Easy enough. I walked in 15 minutes later to mass confusion at the front counter. No clear pick up area, people needing to cut through all the waiting customers to fill their drinks up, and people looking at each other nasty about who was next in line because of two different entrances. They seriously need to kill the cold display case to the left of the cashiers and make that a dedicated pickup station with a huge sign over the counter that says PICK UP and have 1 person dedicated to fulfilling those orders. They also need to move the drink station so sit-down customers don't have to break thru the ordering line, literally. I ordered a Buffalo chicken sandwich and a Carolina burger. Both buns were soggy with moisture. I opened my burger with "CAR" marked on it and ta-daaa, a completely plain burger patty. Are you kidding me? How is that even possible? I opened a large styrofoam container of barely warm crinkle cut fries only for them to also be soggy with moisture (instead of crispy as I would expect with a crinkle cut). It seemed like a bunch of untrained high school kids were running the operations up front with no clear management or a primary expediter checking the orders. At least 3 different people were looking in bags, even pulling food out trying to identify what order was in what bag. What?!?! I tried this place without reading Yelp reviews because the drive-thru line is always lined up around the building. I'm not sure what magic they are putting in your bags but this was my first and last time there.

Good cheeseburger, but the people were grouchy and the store looked dirty. Won't go back.

The staff is great. Always friendly and welcoming you in to the restaurant. The meal i tried this time is the roasted garlic and bacon pub burger with of course cheese curds. I also tried the new mac and cheese. The burger was legendary. The culinary creators are great at combining great ingredients together to create taste worthy dishes. The new limited time cheddar on cheddar mac and cheese definitely puts them on the playing field with this latest dish. Hopefully you have experienced greatness here, if not come by for an amazing meal.

BUT TODAY (8/27/26) my husband and I wanted to go there again for a lunch date and when we went there for lunch. We went inside to order and the sane woman was there but this time she seemed super unfriendly this go around. I ordered some fried corn nuggets and I reminded her that the last time we were there that she told me she liked eating the fried corn nuggets herself when a fresh batch was put it. Telling her that didn't jog her memory at all. We waited for our food and we were the only ones eating there and I glanced around... the tables and stools looked like they hadn't been wiped down in a while. We got our food and our bbq meat was not hot at all... barely warm! There was no smokey flavor to the meat and most of it was soaked in some type of vinegar sauce which was nasty tasting. Come to find out, it was their House Sauce. I was able to get some thicker bbq sauce only upon asking a man behind the counter, as there were no sauce bottles on the tables. While eating, I saw a large garbage can with an orange lid near the tables. It was so gross looking that I was definitely done trying to eat at that point. I felt that at some point they could have replaced that can with a nicer looking one. We spent $34 and it was not worth it. The customer service was zero, the meat was bland, and there was no atmosphere. We were not impressed and we will not be going back to this restaurant and it's under 2 miles from our house.

So we ordered a lot of food for rehearsal dinner the day before. All the meat and sides were quickly packed up when we arrived. Smelling food on the way to dinner was difficult. The Pulled Pork was amazing. Beans were great. Collard Greens were amazing - I managed to get one serving before they were gone! Mac & Cheese and Hushpuppies were great. Coleslaw was creamy and delicious. Plenty of sauces were provided. Not much was left after dinner. The only disappointment was the hot sauce. The owner said they made their own Ghost Pepper sauce. Well, several of our family love really spicy food, like Thai. Their sauce had very little heat, almost none. Kick it up a bit then caution people and make it hot!

I mentioned my hubby and I would be sharing. When she came out with three plates, I was worried she misunderstood, but she actually had them split the cherry cobbler and ice cream. Now that was very unexpected, but I loved it. Multiple people stopped by our table to remove finished plates and check if we need anything. The place was like an upscale diner. Cloth napkins, but tvs showing football games. A nice bar, but they ran out of grenadine. No cherries in the Shirley temple. The mint julip was well made. Beef and vegetable soup was great, but the beef was burger. Not what I expected, but the fresh corn in it was wonderful. Black and blue filet salad was fantastic. They did not skimp on the blue cheese, it had spinach, kale, tomatoes and onion. My kiddo had the special, flounder and crab cakes. She said it was decent. Hubby lived the gumbo. I couldn't do 5 stars because the appetizer plates were dirty. All of them. All silverware and glasses were clean, but there was visible food residue on the appetizer plates and that's a big disappointment. To be honest, as someone who likes to eat fresh food, the salad was is definitely something I would recommend.
