Culpeper's Rebellion (1677-1678) was a grassroots revolt here in Albemarle County, driven by anger over British trade restrictions and the oppressive rule of British agents. The Navigation Acts, which taxed goods moving between colonies, intensified local frustrations, especially as the Proprietors continued appointing officials who limited colonists' rights. The crisis peaked when Thomas Miller, acting governor and enforcer of the trade laws, abused his power by manipulating elections and punishing dissenters. In response, John Culpeper, John Jenkins, and George Durant led an armed takeover, imprisoning Miller and running the colony themselves for two years with greater stability. Culpeper was later tried for treason in England but acquitted, revealing the vulnerability of proprietary rule and the growing assertiveness of colonial self-governance. Shaw was a physician turned politician and soldier who represented Currituck County before resigning to lead the Eighth North Carolina Troops. Born in Newport, Rhode Island in 1819, he studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania with help from a benefactor and later opened a practice in Indiantown. Shaw served in the state senate and twice in the U.S. House before the Civil War. As colonel, he commanded at Roanoke Island, where his regiment was captured in February 1862. After months in prison he was exchanged, returned to command at Camp Mangum, and was killed at Batchelder's Creek in 1864. He and his wife, Mary Riddick Trotman, had three children and are buried at their home in Shawboro. Isaac Gregory, born in 1737 in Pasquotank County rose from county sheriff to Revolutionary War brigadier-general despite having no prior combat experience. A committed public servant, he held various regional posts and led North Carolina militia forces at the Battle of Camden in 1780, where he was severely wounded and briefly captured. Though later accused of treason due to a forged letter, he was exonerated, though suspicions lingered. After the war, Gregory remained active in civic life, serving in the General Assembly, constitutional conventions, and as a trustee and customs official. A founder and president of Livingstone College. Born in Elizabeth City. House was 2 miles south" Joseph C. Price was born in Elizabeth City to a free mother and enslaved father, and despite a delayed start to formal education, he excelled academically after enrolling in schools in New Bern. He pursued teaching, becoming a principal in Wilson by 1871, and later shifted his focus to ministry, graduating as valedictorian from Lincoln University and completing seminary training in record time. Price emerged as a powerful orator, advocating for prohibition, education, and racial equality, and raised significant funds during a European tour to establish a college for Black students in North Carolina. In 1882, he became president of Zion Wesley College, later renamed Livingstone College, where he gained national recognition and declined prestigious offers to remain committed to the institution. His leadership extended beyond education when he was elected president of the Afro-American League and the National Equal Rights Association in 1890. Tragically, Price died in 1893 from Bright's disease, leaving behind his wife Jennie Smallwood and five children, and was honored with burial on the Livingstone College campus. Wild began organizing "Wild's African Brigade," a unit of African American regiments in eastern North Carolina, though the brigade was never fully assembled due to logistical setbacks. Wild later led a significant military expedition into northeastern North Carolina, aiming to suppress Confederate guerrillas near the Dismal Swamp Canal, free enslaved people, and recruit Black soldiers. Over 1,700 troops marched from Virginia, uniting at South Mills and reaching Elizabeth City, where they conducted raids, destroyed guerrilla camps and distilleries, and liberated around 2,500 enslaved individuals. There are a number of monuments and memorials here and of course, you can walk over and watch the Great Bridge Bridge open and close if you're fortunate. One highlight is the obelisk commemorating the Battle of Great Bridge. It is a tribute to the Patriot soldiers who fought and died in one of Virginia's earliest Revolutionary War victories. It is a classic granite shaft, inscribed with tributes to the men who helped drive British forces from the colony on December 9, 1775. If you're able, tour the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways History Museum. Lots of history on the Colonial Era and the brief but decisive clash that marked a turning point: colonial forces routed British troops under Lord Dunmore, effectively ending royal control in Virginia and forcing the British to retreat to Norfolk. We love this park and it's nice and close to home. Sadly I haven't been into the museum yet. But…read morethe nature and the paths to walk are nice. In the front you will find a concrete path with information along the way. The path away from the water has been Newley done with concrete used to be gravel. It will lead you to a oversight and can take you along another path to walk down. The path near the water will take you all the way down to the high bridge. It's a very nice walk and sand at the end with water. Just don't forget some bug spray! And watch for snakes. Also in the front past the building you can find lots of picnic tables to have some hangout time or some lunch. It's in a perfect location lots of places to grab food near and drive to sit and eat.
