Not everyone can afford a lavish holiday spent learning such an art and getting there Padi qualification in order that they can then go and discover the wonderful underwater paradise that our planet provides. The solution to this problem lies with organisations like the London School of diving. Do all of your training and exams in the U.K. and once qualified you are free to go anywhere in the world and dive. High quality scuba instruction form these guy's will make it a pleasure to learn and they will take away any anxiety that you may have. The other benefit to learning here is that when you do go away, you don't eat into your holiday with the training and exams that are required before you are allowed to get in the water. Do it !! - Diving takes you to another world , it is amazing, LSD will take away the hard bit and allow you immediate access when you get to your destination.

I did an EFR and drysuit speciality course at the London School of Diving. The EFR (emergency…read morefirst responder) course was done onsite at their Chiswick premise, and I was very happy with it! The instructor was knowledgeable and friendly, and made the course a lot of fun! I felt that I really learnt a lot. The drysuit speciality was just OK - the instructor was again very friendly and knowledgeable and a big fan of drysuit diving. We did the course at Wraysbury, and the instructor had 4 OW (open water) students with him at the same time. He spent most of his time and effort with the OW students, which I can totally understand from a prioritisation perspective - these were new divers who really needed his time and attention to develop their skills, and I was an experienced diver. However, I felt because of this, I did not get as much out of my course as I wanted - for example my drysuit leaked as soon as I got in the water. I would expect that in a drysuit speciality course, the instructor should take the opportunity to start teaching me how to identify the source of the leak, how to cope with it, and even go into details later on how to repair the leak. However as he had his hands full with his OW students, he just checked if I was still happy to continue and got on with skills for the whole group. I think this is a scheduling issue that the school should really consider, to ensure that everyone gets the best from their courses. If I were to book a course with them again, it's certainly something I will check on first. I think the school has great instructors, but in this instance, the schedule did not allow them to teach.

My wife found this facility where the kayak competition was held for the London Olympics. We pre-booked which I think is required. You have to be above the age of 14 to white water raft. It was an awesome experience. You go through a loop and we were on the water for an hour or so. We went around 6 or 7 times. Tom was our guide and you could tell he was very experienced. The facility serves lunch and beers for after your adventure. It is approximately an hour outside of town and I recommend as a must do for anyone to take a break from the sightseeing. They also have kayaks and tubes.

We were a big group of around 60 people and we all managed to have fun. Although it can be seen as quite daunting at the beginning my instructor Tony made sure that we were all constantly happy and safe. Tony helped me overcome my fears and made sure I was smiling and was happy for being there! His words of encouragement made us all think clear, stay focused and enjoy our day out at the same time. Even now, four months later, we all look at the pictures and think of what a wonderful time we had!! I would highly recommend it to people that want to spend the day in the water with there friends and families. The activities will keep everyone busy for a long time and you can also enjoy a nice coffee and croissant at their lovely coffee shop based on the first floor! Tip: Safety comes first so make sure you always keep the safety equipment with you whilst in water!!

In the land-locked West Midlands, you'd hardly think there would be a demand for a scuba diving and…read moresnorkeling shop. We're pretty far from any vast bodies of water and the wildlife in the seas around England isn't exactly exotic. But sure enough here is Scuba Pursuits who sell shallow-water and deep-water diving gear and who run recreational, professional and technical diving courses. I'm not after a diving course, but I need a new snorkel mask. I'm a bit weird in that I feel more confident when swimming in open water in a snorkel mask, and after swimming in the river Lug a few weeks ago I noticed that my mask had become a bit tired looking. I'm taken through the various masks that they have in stock. 'Did you want a purge valve on it?', asks the man. This is new to me. He explains that if water gets into the mask that the purge valve means you can breathe the water out of the mask by an exhalation through you nose. (He puts it a bit more graphically that that!) Water can seep in sometimes and its often a panicky and claustrophobic moment, so I'm taken with this device. So, I'm £22 quid lighter, and I've got a mask, a new snorkel tube and a handy bag. I've got no need for a diving course, but if you do then Scuba Pursuits training courses are held in swimming pools in Birmingham and Staffordshire.

Hence my surprise when I first saw a dedicated scuba shop on the Stratford road in Shirley, Solihull, but on closer inspection, there's no real surprise that Scuba + Outdoor Pursuit Centre has weathered the internet storm with such ease, as it's an absolutely fantastic shop. It has literally everything you could possibly need for a scuba trip, regardless if you're a novice looking for all the basics or a seasoned pro just trying to upgrade a piece of equipment. I'd imagine that the reason a scuba shop is able to survive whilst other businesses haven't is partly due to those looking to get into diving wanting professional advice from real life experts and not just people over the internet, and the shop doesn't disappoint in that department, with all the staff helpful, friendly, and clearly passionate about diving. An excellent choice for scuba enthusiasts everywhere.
