OMG! This place puts Chipotle, Baja, California Tortilla, etc... to shame, and it doesn't even cost much more. I had a chicken burrito, which I rate as perhaps the finest burrito my mouth has ever known the pleasure of turning to mush. The grilled green peppers and onions were bursting with flavor, while the chicken was well marinated without being overly salty like at most of the chains. All of the salsas were uniquely delish. My wife fell in love with the Boylan's soda fountain, which ejaculates forth what is surely the finest tasting diet soda anywhere. Is there such a thing as pure cane aspartame? I'm poised to go back again tomorrow, and the next day. District Taco is my new fiber fix. read more

Love the Taco- 3 corn taco for $7.00. Best bang for your buck. Plus you get any free topping you want, including: Pico de gallo, fresh jalapeño, lime white rice, beans, white onion, cilantro, cheese, grilled veggie...etc. I usually order corn taco instead of flour one. I also like to order small chips & guacamole on the side. So I can try the free salsa bar that has different kind of fun salsa. If you like sodas, you should definitely order it. To be fair, the food is worth 3 stars but they lose a couple stars for wasted potential and my disappointment. I have been looking everywhere for some decent Mexican food and I was resigned to the fact that I'm SOL out here but then someone mentioned this place and I was intrigued especially when I heard about it's food truck beginnings. The first sign of trouble should have been that flour tortillas were the automatic option but I was so distracted by the rotisserie on which they were cooking their carne al pastor. In all my previous experiences, the rotisserie is the sign of amazing tacos to come. HOWEVER, next to the rotisserie there should be a man with a machete cutting meat off as the orders come in. This was not the case and as a result, all of the fat melts off the meat and it slowly dries out as it sits there, a decoration at this point. But I will get back to the food in a moment... The menu is pretty big but there were waaaay too many options for a taco stand. Tacos are simple food so there is no need to over-complicate them with so many topping choices. The owners should embrace the fact that they are Mexican and therefore know what is best for tacos. Be a taco nazi because I'm so tired of "Americanized" Mexican food out here. Back to the food...I was completely ready to order 2 tacos al pastor on corn tortillas with cilantro and onion but was subsequently caught off guard when the girl asked if I wanted chopped pineapple on them...WTF? Hell no! Completely thrown I forgot to mention the corn tortillas and thus began the decline of my experience at District Taco. The salsas were OK, nothing special but they are necessary especially if you have forgone the god-forsaken chopped pineapple on your tacos al pastor which means your meat is dry and flavor-less. As a native Southern Californian I am willing to forgive most of the Mexican food the East Coast has to offer but comparing what I heard about this place versus what I experienced, this place needs to be taken down a couple of notches. Definitely a fan of District Taco. Fresh, affordable, and very zippy service. So the biggest problem I have is that you can have unlimited toppings on whatever you order. And, when there's the option of unlimited toppings, I must get pretty much all the toppings on one flour tortilla taco, which then leads to total yummy disastrous eating. Coupled with their DIY salsa bar, that also has limes and salsas of varying heat degrees, I tend to get ahead of myself and create leaky tasty tacos.Thankfully, my dining companion did not seem to mind me stuffing face like ugly madness. Seriously, this isn't really a DT problem, as it's my own problem. Sigh... Anywhos, the unlimited toppings allows for so many options to be had at DT. Therefore, I'm a big fan of the 3 tacos for $8. On certain days they have fish tacos (Tues & Thurs?) and shrimp tacos (Monday & Wed?). I really like the meaty carne asada and the sweet al pastor. The al pastor comes with chucks of pineapple, which adds a nice fresh sweetness. You can opt for corn tortillas, which are doubled, instead of a single flour tortilla. I am going to go broke buying breakfast tacos. District Taco set up their cart in front of my office building last week and I haven't looked back since. After falling in love with the breakfast taco after several trips to Texas, I've always been disappointed that I couldn't find a DC equivalent. District Taco has finally done it. I stick to the "Basic" -- light, fluffy flour tortilla filled with light, fluffy scrambled eggs and cheese. You get two "add-ins" for free, so of course I put bacon in mine, which is crispy and crumbled to perfection. The best part, though, is the salsa, which not only tastes incredibly fresh and is a fantastic compliment to the taco, but also is the same flavor composition of the Texas-style tacos I love so much. At $3, each taco is a bit small, but I find myself satisfied even after just one. If it's going to be a big day, I'll splurge and get 2-for-$5. The service is beyond friendly -- they are really trying to get to know their customer base. I could go on, but instead think I'm going to go downstairs to get another taco. read more

I am updating my review on this place. I went there for lunch on Dec 23rd 2011 around 1pm and got the Burrito Desnudo (burrito bowl) with Carne Asada, Pico de Gallo, Cheese, lettuce and sour cream. I got it to-go since I had to go back to work and ate it. It tasted OK, not super flavorful but seemed like fresh ingredients. Well everything was fine until that night, I started to get REALLY sick. The next morning Dec 24th (Christmas Eve) I was in some pain, I started to get symptoms of food poisoning. All Christmas Eve, Christmas and today (Dec 26th) I have been sick to my stomach and was barely able to eat any food. especially over Christmas this weekend. This really would have ruined my holiday if I did not have plans to stick around the Northern VA area. I have had food poisoning before from another restaurant so I know what it feels like along with the symptoms. The other food I had around the same time I got sick was cereal, plain pasta with butter and District Taco. So I know it was here that I got sick. This was my 2nd time back to this place to give it a try again and I will not be back ever. Not worth possibly getting sick for 3.5 star Mexican food. *3.5 Stars* Tasty soft tacos! Ingredients seem fresh and of good quality. Three tacos for just $7. I ordered the grilled chicken and barbacoa tacos "American style" with lettuce, cheese, and pico de gallo. Meats were tender and well-seasoned. I realize I don't need a lot of toppings when the meats are this flavorful! I appreciate how they individually wrap each taco in deli paper and foil before bagging it. Definitely helps any juices from spreading to the other tacos (the barbacoa ones had a lot of liquid from the meat). And it makes sharing easier! 3.5stars. I was looking forward to this the other night as I got to pick a new place for us to try out. Even though I knew the parking lot was small and MAY be difficult. I wanted to finally try Distric Taco! So we agreed and all meet up there I was so hungry by then that I when BIG and ordered the burrito mojado w/ barbacoa. It was served in there plate size 'bowl' covered with a sauce & drizzles of sour cream and a side of shredded lettuce so the plate/bowl can seem ... healthy? hahaha!! But wait, what got me even more excited was the joy of being able to chase down my big burrito (think chipotle size) with refreshing gulps of birch beer! MOre places should serve birch beer if you ask me hahaha! The salsa bar they had a fresh supply of pico de gallo, diced jalapenos, cilantro, diced onions, lime, mild tomatillo salsa, medium chiltomate salsa, & hot mestizo salsa. Latter of which I didn't find very spicy at all. The service was quick and kept up with the steady flow of patrons that walked in and ordered to eat-in or carry-out. This is some great Tex-Mex. The meat is seasoned to perfection. I was just driving by and thought I'd stop in for lunch and tried the tacos and guacamole. The chicken has a great grilled flavor, and the carnitas was off the chain. I really didn't have to do much to add flavor. I barely added salsa and was very happy. Great deal. $8 for 3 mix n match tacos. The egg filling is flavorless but the pork/pineapple and chicken are very flavorful. Each of my tacos came with 2 corn tortillas which helps hold the fillings together because 1 lone tortilla gets soggy and crumbly real quick. Why you ask? Why the juicy and delicious fillings of course! Also the veggie option comes with guac I believe. Unlimited salsa bar toppings is a huge plus. Ends up being very filling if you add a lot on. Lines do get long here during rush hour and the order/pick up is chaotic. Have to come on Tues or Fri to try the special fish tacos. This place beats Chipotle for freshness, taste, huge variety (breakfast tacos/burritos!!), hours, and overall value. DT needs to expand everywhere! read more

District Taco is like Rubio's or LA Salsa, and nearly identical to Chevy's in Pentagon City. If I really wanted quick tacos then District Taco is probably the best of the four options above. Quick disclaimer: DT isn't Mexican food, nor is Chipotle. They are both American food wrapped in tortillas. I think Chipotle is the superior choice. The atmosphere is a bit over the top and the abundance of plastic everywhere made it feel as 'franchisey' as possible. The staff was ok, and the kitchen didn't call my card out loud enough to hear them from 8 feet away. Eventually I just realized my food was ready because it was sitting on the counter. The chopped beef tacos weren't flavored to note and were a wet mess. It was like each taco had been dipped in water?. The pineapple pork 'Al Pastor' burrito was something I'll never order again even if it were to have been cooked fresh. The salsas were also a sad story. Especially the hot salsa. Throwing the hottest spices in tomato paste isn't hot salsa. There are amazing salsa flavors and options when properly prepared will add a star to any Mexican dish! The medium was decent and the mild was basically tomato water. I'll probably try it out again another lunch time when I run out of other options! Omfg. Seriously, District Taco is NOT all that. Okay, I admit that I can be a judgmental $&@(! when it comes to tex-mex, but that's because I can. And granted, I have a few less-than-kind reviews of mexican food restaurants in DC. But I thought District Taco, given it's plethora of praise, would be a pleasant surprise. I was disappointed, and I was yet again left shaking my head in disbelief at people who will eat any old tex-mex and automatically love it (see, e.g., Guapo's. Seriously what is up with that place's popularity? IT IS SO BAD.). First I tried the cochinita pibil, and I will admit that the meat itself was decent and had flavor. Unfortunately, after four bites I decided to give up because by that time, the taco had spewed its guts all over my hands and was no longer a taco. A lot of people rave about how stuffed their tacos are. That's good and all until it's just so messy with squishy mexican ingredients (i.e. stewed meat, guac, sour cream, salsa, etc.) that you feel like you would DIE if you were caught on camera attempting to eat this blob of mess. For the record, I only had lettuce, guac, and pico... which ordinarily is never a problem. This one, however = orange oil mixed with salsa drippings all over my hands. Promptly ran out of napkins. Lesson #1: Don't ever eat here accompanied by someone whose respect is important to you. District Taco IS NOT keeping it cute. So then I thought okay, well maybe the pork is just too oily in its sauce; I will GIVE DT THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT and try the beef instead. Verdict: slightly less messy, infinitely more tasteless. The meat didn't have any flavor. The guac is forgettable. The pico de gallo is bland. The red salsa helped, but not enough to make me willing to eat something requiring 20+ napkins and feel like a fool. Come on guys, really?? I'm thinking perhaps this place is more popular for their breakfast tacos, but even then you're still getting that worthless store-bought tortilla. No thx. The people were nice. And, the food cart may also have Virginia plates on it, but, misnomer aside, wherever this tasty little food cart comes from, I'm glad I stumbled across it! Somehow (magic, perhaps) the tacos at District Taco manage to be both light, but filling at the same time. They are made right in front of you, with a variety of fresh ingredient options to choose from. The staff was friendly, helpful, and engaging. For me, friendly service goes such a long way and though it just seems like another food cart on the street, don't be mistaken. District Taco is a REAL treat! read more

Went here on a Tuesday at the recommendation of a friend and I absolutely loved it. It's in Arlington, Virginia...so calling it "District" Taco doesn't make much sense, but that's about the only thing here that doesn't make any sense. Everything else is fantastic - the food is great...tacos start at $2.25 and you get to load them up with whatever toppings you want. There are also great sides, like beans and rice, or queso. You absolutely have to try an order of chips and queso when you go...it is great. Quesadillas are also great. On Tuesdays they have fish tacos, but I've found that the chipotle mayo is over-used and very overpowering...and it's not spicy or smoky like most other chipotle mayos. Very mayonnaisey...if that's a word. At any rate, definitely go here. I'll be back very soon if not today. read more

This is SO close to a 5 star place, but the volume of people that flock to this place, the seating, and the insane (I mean INSANE) parking situation knocks it down. Too bad really. District Taco is now a small local chain in NOVA and DC, go Distric Taco! I feel that this place deserves the success it has had. The restaurant can't help the sheer volume of people that flock to it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It DOES, however, produce all 3 meals well and I feel that they manage the traffic to the best of their ability. I have waited in line for 20 minutes, but the amount of people that filtered through in that time was impressive. Unfortunately, there is often nowhere to sit when it's this busy. Breakfast tacos come for a deal for 3 at a time and are really superb at a fair price point. I am not an egg person, and order potato, bacon, and cheese tacos. These are phenomenal. Their fish tacos and chicken tacos are great at lunch and dinner. You really must try their queso, it's the best. I have very nostalgic memories of being raised in Texas when I can have a nice cup of black coffee, a breakfast taco, and chips and queso for breakfast. Huge points for district taco. This is a good hangover cure for groups of up to 4 probably. It's low key and casual for lunch and dinner. Tonight, I was reminded why DT is the worst taco place in town. I figured I would order the already pricey $12.25 California burrito, only to find out they were going to add another $2.50 on my bill because meat is so expensive... The burrito is already expensive, how is it that this cost is being added and at that rate? I had stayed away for 6 months because the last batch of food my family got was inedible - someone screwed up the sauce in the meats and all tasted awful. I came in here on a whim after a doctor's appointment. I was hungry. It was lunch time. Also, everyone and their mama was praising this place. So there I was. I ordered chicken tacos with chorizo, beans, lettuce, tomato and sour cream. YUM! These tacos are basic, but amazing. The store was clean and the staff was helpful to a newbie like myself. The manager, Chris, personally greeted me and asked me how I liked my taco after I ordered. It's really nice to find a manager who gives a damn. I could tell he ran a tight ship, as everyone was working and the store was spotless. The actual restaurant is a bit far for me, but luckily I have discovered the food truck that sits outside of my office in Crystal City. District Taco was a pleasant surprise in terms of Mexican food in the area. It's tough to find any above average Mexican places with fairly priced menu items. This place however, delivers. There are a number of varieties of tacos to choose from (hard/soft) along with meats, sides etc. They even have a dedicated salsa bar mixed with 6 different types of salsa. I recommend getting the guacamole w/ chips, and any of the soft tacos. For NOVA prices, they're pretty good at $2.25 per taco. I would say get 2 tacos each and split the large guacamole with a friend. It's probably the perfect portion size. The service here is great and I think it's a great atmosphere. There is usually a line, but it moves quickly and service is prompt. I highly recommend this place and since it's close to where I live, I'll definitely frequent it more often. The only reason I could think about giving this place less than four stars is that they aren't open right now, 12:43am on a late Tuesday night. I was first exposed to DT by their cart that they had in Rosslyn, but that cart is no longer in service. Our lunch options in Rosslyn were worse of for the loss, but so it goes. Thankfully DT still has this brick and mortar location that's easy to get to. Parking is a bit tricky, but small price to pay for delicious tacos. We went around 1pm on a Saturday and were lucky to have no one waiting in front of us. However after we ordered a lengthy line formed and we had just missed it. I felt that the taco gods were throwing us a bone thanks to my loyalty to their cart. I went with three chicken tacos, and customized them thanks to the nice selection of toppings that they have available. After waiting a few minutes they called my number and I dived into them face first. Without fail the chicken is always cook perfectly, as it's always flavorful, tender, and juicy. This time was no different. Walking outside I stretched out in the sun, content and full of the most delicious tacos in Arlington. Damn right it was a good day. read more

these really are solid tacos. They bring their cart to Rosslyn at least once per week. You better show up early or late for lunch because there is always a line. Carnitas: The port is a little on the watery side. I am guessing they keep it in braising liquid until it is served. The carnitas should be tender yet solid. A lot of places try to get away with a mush pulled pork like product. Seasoned well? Yes. Tender? Yes. True carnitas? No. Chicken: The chicken here is good but not great. Chicken needs to be seasoned and cooked perfectly to hold up in a taco. I'm not really sure what it is but the chicken at DT doesn't do it for me. It seems to drown under all the toppings and salsa rather than shine as the meat of the dish. Al Pastor: This is the stuff that keeps me coming back. The pork is tender and substantial, seasoned well, and with the perfect amount of pineapple. Recommendation: Don't go nuts on the toppings! I know its hard when the toppings are free and unlimited but you don't want to end up with the equivalent of an 8 year-old's suicide soda. I recommend Al Pastor with pico, jalapenos, guacamole, and lettuce. Yeah, they have bacon, chorizo, cheese, sour cream, beans and fajita vegetables but I like to keep it simple and not muddy the flavors. read more

This place isn't too bad, not the best taco I've had, but it definitely wasn't the worse. I'm from Los Angeles and trust me I know damn good tacos and it's so hard to find any good tacos in Virginia. We were in the mood for some tacos, but not those bootleg flour tortilla wannabe tacos, so I found District Taco on Yelp and reviewed the photos and it looked pretty good so we drove on over. The decor is sort of industrial, odd. I have no idea why it looks like that. Maybe they were going for a Mexico vibe, but this was a complete miss. Either way, we searched the menu for the ceviche and were sad to hear that it had been removed for the menu. Fail! So we ordered 3 tacos for $9 - I got 2 steak tacos and 1 carnitas taco on corn tortillas (because that's how you're suppose to eat your tacos folks - not on flour tortillas!) and we also got the chips with guacamole. We thought their "Chipotle" serving line was odd and right away we assumed it would be like Chipotle so we didn't have high hopes for this place. We got a few salsas from the salsa bar and were pleasantly surprised. Pretty good. We ate the chips and guacamole and I must say that I loved it. That is the best guacamole I've had in Virginia. Very good! They totally nailed it, chunky and good flavor. The tacos arrived and I dug into the first steak taco and I must say that I seriously don't understand why all the places in Virginia use steak, it's suppose to be carne asada which is a flat steak, not a huge chunk of meat. It should tenderly tear apart and fill our mouth with delicious flavor. Not STUFF it with a huge piece of meat that you have to dig out w a toothpick! Ugh.. I miss LA.. Ok ok enough of that. Needless to say I was not a fan of the steak tacos, BUT the carnitas taco on the other hand was on point. Definitely will be going back for the carnitas tacos. I don't know how long District Taco has been here but I am SO MAD at myself for not going here sooner, having lived less than three miles away for the last three years. This place is a revelation. Really. The tacos were just fantastic. I had the barbacoa (shredded beef) and chicken. I normally just get beef but I'm so glad I tried the chicken; it was absolutely amazing. Don't get me wrong, the barbacoa was really good too but the chicken was just exceptional. I heard good things about the pork options from my friends. Everything tasted really fresh, it was very reasonably priced, and the guacamole is some of the best I've ever had. The topping options are really good (you can even add beans to your tacos for free) and they have a fixins bar with various varieties and heat levels of salsas as well as chopped cilantro, fresh chopped jalapenos, onions, and lime slices. Tacos come on flour tortillas but corn tortillas are an option too and I think they're made in house. Next time I go I'll try the other steak option to go with my chicken, and I would definitely get the chips and guac again. Or maybe I'll get a burrito. I don't know; I'll be back more than once. To top it all off, they have Boylan's soda in the fountain. Two tacos, chips and guac and a fountain soda was almost exactly $10. One of my friends and I enjoyed our tacos so much that we decided to try the breakfast tacos the very next morning. True story. The breakfast tacos were quite as outstanding as the regular ones. So.. Just coming back from Los Angeles, which sets the bar high for exceptional mexican food... I was feeling a bit uncertain coming here. It's American mexican food. Burritos weren't full of flavor; I believe when you sink your teeth in a burrito the mexican flavor should hit you like a freight train. Here, the flavor was bland and overpriced. Overall it was just ALRIGHT. I mean Chipotle has better tasting burritos than this place. I was expecting a lot more with the crazy line that was out the door on a Wednesday night. It was ehhhh.... The ceviche was good... very clean and full of flavor, but with any amount of lime it would fire up the tastebuds with ease. A fair taco, echoing warehouse interior, bored workers, but they have decent designer sodas on draft. Their default tortilla is flour, not corn. That is just a strange choice on their part. Their breakfast taco has enough greasy goodness to offset a mild hangover. Their tacos are a bland copy of a real taco, with fillings that all taste kind of similar to each other. The fixings bar on the far wall, however, does allow you to punch up an otherwise drab meal. This place is like Chipotle, with a touch of Burrito Brothers fakery thrown in gratis. If you want a taco, there are at least two much better places in Arlington. But you can walk for just under $10 and if you are in the area, you could do worse. read more

I went to District Taco as a favor to one of my friends. It looks shady outside, but I decided to give it a try since he was telling me how great it was. I have to say that it was good. It looks a little more fresh than chipotle and the other chains... so that should be a good thing. The portion sizes for what you pay though didn't make it worth coming back. I got the carne asada tacos and they were good. Nothing special, just good. It just didn't look that clean inside and apparently the health code violations (that I saw afterward) didn't really help in this review. The line was out the door when we went and there was no place to park which knocked some stars off. I'll definitely give this place another try, possibly at the downtown location which looks nice and clean inside. I might have to try the breakfast options if they're available all day. I do reiterate... I'll probably go to the other location downtown the next time. It deserves another shot. read more

I went here last week for the first time for a going-away dinner for my friend. In my experience, the food here was just okay. I had the Nachos Borrachos and although it was filling, I felt that I could have easily prepared this myself at home. The ambiance was fast-casual. There was nothing very fancy about the interior. The sauces were tasty, but overall, it was just okay to me. I didn't encounter anything wrong with the place, but I probably won't go back since the food was just okay. read more

So I voluntarily went gluten-free (or as a co-worker calls it "you went full glutard") because of my boyfriend's new allergies. What to avoid? Among them, gluten, malt, yeast, soy, sesame and dairy. Which sadly, is in everything. This was our first time dining out in several weeks. Going gluten-free at a taco joint is pretty easy, as you can always request corn tortillas. We played it safe and ordered their burrito bowls. He ordered carnitas and I ordered carne asada. They come with rice and beans by default and you have a selection of unlimited toppings. Fifty cent surcharge if you want guac (and of course you know you want guac!). It's set up a bit different from Chipotle in that you rattle off all your toppings when you order. They also have a salsa bar along with lime wedges, raw onions and cilantro. When your food is ready, a staff member brings it to you. Overall, we found the food to be tasty. A manager also walked the floor and asked customers about their meal, which I thought was a nice touch. My carne asada was a bit overcooked, but I have had similar experiences with Chipotle's steak meat. Next time I'll order barbacoa or al pastor. I do think Chipotle has better execution, but I like to support a local business, so will definitely be back! read more

oh my. I think i died and went to texmex heaven. this is a way better place for burritos than chipotle... the flavors of the meat, and the fixings you can get are delicious. i ordered burrito mojado (choice of meat, black beans, salsa de chile, sour cream, cheese and unlimited toppings) with al pastor (carved rotisserie pork marinated with pineapple). the meat was crunchy and sweet which added a whole new level of texture and flavor into the burrito. the salsa de chile sauce on top had a bit of a kick. but adding in their hot sauces (which i guess is one thing i'd have to complain about because there wasnt enough heat even with their "hot"). this thing was HUGE! i did attempt their extremely hot sauce which they keep behind the counter, and OMG did that burn. their hot sauces go from a bit bland to way too hot to consume, unless you have an iron tongue! another huge PLUS is that they have sodas made from pure sugar cane. we tried every flavor. my favs were black cherry and lemon lime. the bf's favs were black cherry and birch beer (similar to root beer). they also serve breakfast all day. totally trying this the next time go. stand by for a report on their huevos rancheros! read more

Amanda B. you have created a monster. But, I'm like the friendly one at the end of Sesame Street's lovable Grover book "The Monster At The End of This Book." I've only tried their namesake fare of tacos, and that's all I need in my life. Those that know me well, know that I will suggest Mexican food often when asked to pick places for meals. I love it; I can eat it a few times a week and be happy. (I'd probably weigh a lot more though so thank goodness I get stopped..) Fresh ingredients, great variety of toppings and pretty quick service. Boylan's fountain soda too! It's a bit out of my way but always well worth the trip. read more
