I've always been a big fan of Dishoom, but the Canary Wharf location doesn't quite live up to the standard of their other branches. While it's not a bad restaurant by any means, it's probably my least favourite of the seven Dishoom locations I've visited so far (out of their 10 total restaurants).
I visited after 6 PM, which is usually a busy time for Dishoom, I was still able to get a table with a short wait, upon checking in with a staff member, I was given a pager and advised to sit at the bar for around half an hour.
The bar area wasn't clean, with empty bowls of food and glasses left on the table - there was no one appearing to take care of this.
I found the restaurant to be dark and noisy; it became too uncomfortable for my liking, it was even difficult to communicate with the people sitting at my table and my server, we had to keep repeating things - mainly down to the loud music, the restaurant was pretty much full, and people had to shout to communicate with people at their table to hear each other over the music.
I ordered the Chicken Ruby with Basmati Rice and Gunpowder Potatoes, one of my go-to dishes when dining at Dishoom. The food itself was quite good and certainly not the issue. The rice was perfectly fluffy, the potatoes arrived hot and packed with great flavours, and the Chicken Ruby was tasty. However, the dim lighting made the chicken appear pink, which was off-putting. While I could tell it was fully cooked, I felt more comfortable eating it under the light of a phone torch, which detracted from the experience.
The potatoes were brought out later than the rest of my table's order without any explanation. I understand they might have taken longer to prepare, but it felt odd that one item was overlooked. A simple acknowledgement, like "They're on their way," would have made a difference. Instead, I spent about five minutes wondering if my order had even been heard, especially given how loud it was inside the restaurant.
Service wasn't as attentive. I understand they were very busy, so they didn't have the time to dedicate towards our table as they would during lunch service, but little things like not topping up water do add up - especially in a place which charges a service charge which is a practice I wholly disagree with as it should be up to the diner's discretion whether to tip or not to tip.
The food was good - but the atmosphere wasn't with the poorly lit dark restaurant and loud music now, Dishoom isn't your cheap takeaway Indian either, so I'd just expect better. I probably wouldn't return to this specific Dishoom location in the future, unfortunately, and I much prefer Kensington and Kings Cross, amongst others, when in London. 3* read more
