    Plain City Auction

    Plain City Auction

Plain City Auction house has been in business for many decades and has been held in high esteem but…read morewas recently purchased by their new owner John Coffey who seems intent on squandering that reputation. John Coffey owns both Plain City Auction and Old 42 Antiques & Vintage Marketplace. In summary, I was disappointed that the final split was much different than what it appeared to be on the contract, it took a very long time to receive my payment, John was difficult to deal with at times, and items sold for far less than I expected. 1. Final split - Although the contract stated that the auctioneer was to receive 40% and I was to receive 60%, in the end I received approximately 47% and John 53%. This was due to a couple of items that were not mentioned in the contract, namely a 15% buyer's premium and the auctioneer charging me a 40% commission on items that were sold but never paid for. 2. Slow payment - Although the actual contract stated that I was to receive payment within 30 business days of the auction and John indicated that customers often receive payment quicker than this, I did not get a check for nearly 40 business days after the end of the auction. I contacted John several times after the deadline had passed, but each time received an excuse. To put this in perspective, although my parents' house was listed for sale after the end of the auction, we were able to close on the sale of the home and receive payment for the home two weeks before I received payment for the auction. 3. Demeanor of the auctioneer - It was critical for us that we complete the auction before the house went on the market. During our initial meeting we tried to impress this fact on John and we agreed in the contract on an auction date that was 10 days before the house was scheduled to be listed. Despite this, two weeks before the scheduled date for the auction, John asked my wife to move the auction to a date that was 3 days before the house was scheduled to be listed because he was having a staffing issue. My wife was trying to be cooperative and John had us over a barrel because it was too late to find a different auctioneer, so she reluctantly agreed. After the completion of the auction, John scheduled two days for buyers to pick up their items and the second of those days was the same day that the house was to be formally listed for sale. The realtor had showings for 10 perspective buyers already scheduled for that date. During the course of attempting to work out this issue, John became very difficult and at times downright rude. 4. Sale price for items - I realize that this is very subjective, but I was disappointed by the price that the auction house was able to get for many of the items. In retrospect, I feel that one of the other auction houses that we interviewed would have done much better in this regard and I regretted that I had not chosen them.

The Bull Pen - This is the kitchen hutch set I can't find anywhere on their inventory sheet. If it sold, I doubt I got anything for it.

Just a follow-up to my first review. I still would only give this business one star because of…read moreeverything I said in my first review. To follow-up, I did email the owner a few times. Finally, I received a phone call from the owner on March 11, 2024. He said my stuff would be auctioned off on March 16th. It was auctioned off March 16th and they mailed me a check that I received today (March 20). They supposedly auctioned everything off for $3625. After all of their fees, I got $2110. I'm kind of disappointed because I don't think all the fees were explained adequately. The charge to pick up things was $25 a hour per person plus $250 for fuel/equipment. There were three people so that's $75 times 3 hours + $250. Total should be $475. They charged me $625. There is a $25 landfill charge (which was never brought up on the sheet I signed) but that still would only take it to $500. I clocked them being there about 3 hours, but they might've charged more. Also, I don't see the kitchen hutch anywhere on the inventory sheet they provided me, so I guess I wasn't paid for that. There's also some items on the inventory sheet marked $0. I don't know if that means they did not sell or what. If I had to it over again, I think I would have asked them come to the house first and give me an idea of what they would be interested in taking. Either that or tell them they have to take everything. I don't think all the expenses I had to pay were worth whatever I eventually made nor was the mess they left me to deal with. I wish I would've looked at other auction houses. I think I could've done a little better and had a better experience. If you have the time and you live near the property you're selling from, you're better off selling the contents yourself. Not recommended.

As an adult I have been to countless auctions and referred people to him. Jerry and his staff are knowledgeable, personable, and just awesome people. His auctions are first class, very well organized, and an absolute day of fun to go to. Even if you don't buy anything. They make the auctions enjoyable. If you ever need anyone for an auction, realtor, or appraiser I always recommend Jerry. Miami County is very proud that Jerry & his wife have made this their home, their life, their business. Jerry and staff are absolutely one of the number one auctioneers in the state of Ohio.

He also sometimes attributes items as things they are not. For instance, he sold a friend of mine a small vase Stichter said was jadite jade, but was actually resin plastic. When my friend took it to his jeweler for appraisal, the jeweler laughed and said it was worth, "About $3." My friend had paid $150. When he tried to return it to Stichter, he was told "as is where is" and his responsibility was to inspect all items before purchasing. Overall, this auctioneer is mostly hype. Oh, I forgot to mention that he favors his own workers when taking bids. I have seen him ignore other bidders when someone on his staff is bidding on an item.
