I was thrilled when I brought my older dog in today for an infected wound, plus nail trim & heartworm test, and the bill was well within reason!!! I was expecting the worst and was just delighted when I saw the modest fee. Thank you, Craven Animal Hospital, for keeping costs in the affordable range!! We appreciate your efforts and my dog thanks you that her steady stream of treats won't be interrupted!!!

Do not take your pet here and especially do not see Dr.Baker…read more We boarded our dog here while my husband was having surgery at Duke to remove a tumor. The second day of boarding they called to say he had thrown up some plastic and they were going to give him fluids. Throughout the week the vomiting and diarrhea continue, Dr Mel calmly gave us different options to see what was going on, several xrays and ultrasounds were done and we decided on a barium study as a next step. Then on Friday Dr Baker called and said she was ALARMED at what she was seeing on the Xrays and he would just throw up the barium anyway and he needed exploratory surgery. She was incredibly aggressive and forceful. I told her I wanted to talk to my husband and get back to her and she called me back 30 min later to see what I wanted to do while I was already on the phone with the receptionist putting the deposit down. Why so pushy? After the surgery she said nothing could pass through his small intestine to his large intestine probably because of a mass and that we either needed to send him to oncology immediately or euthanize him. We decided we just wanted to bring him home and at least get to say good bye and make him comfortable if that were the case. She said with confusion, so you want me to wake him up? And that we would maybe have 24 hours to decide what to do with him or put him down if we brought him home. When I went to pick him up I asked if they could bring him out and I would pay over the phone because I had my two small children with me and my husband couldnt watch them because he had just been discharged. The receptionist said yea but then called back and said no actually dr baker needs you to come in. She took me to a room and had me leave my two small children in the lobby with a receptionist and said well I really just wanted to know if you wanted to put in orders for pain meds for him. I was crying and she said sorry I know you have your kids with you and all to which I replied yes, and my husband just had a tumor removed so he is not able to help watch them and she said when it rains it pours and did offer an awkward hug. He is now home and having regular bowel movements and hasn't thrown up once. To make matters worse they called on Saturday to say they forgot to put the $150 boarding charges on our $3k bill we paid the day before and didnt even ask how tebow was doing. Does that sound appropriate when we were told he only had 24 hours to live? It makes us feel that the hospitals main concern is their billing and not the wellbeing of their patients. They acknowledged medical staff were on hand and working over the weekend but no one bothered to call and checking in on our dog who was given 24 hours to live until Monday at 12pm. My husband requested to speak to the owner of the clinic and was told Dr Bobbi no longer takes calls regarding the clinic and all concerns have to go the management. Hospital manager Julie gave us a call and was understanding of our concerns and offered additional calls from a doctor which we declined. When trying to convey how we would like to move forward, practice manager Gary took over the call and escalated the tone of the issue greatly. Instead of hearing out our concerns and having a discussion Gary repeatedly talked over us and when asked for a chance to speak he said we have already had an opportunity to share our frustrations since the call has been over 30 min he would be ending the call and mailing us an invoice. He also told us we weren't medically trained so couldn't Garys behavior help explain the other bad reviews this clinic has and the snarky responses provided to other concerned pet parents. When my husband raised a concern on if the surgery performed on our dog was warranted as they did not find any foreign bodies or defective tumors (initial concerns raised by Dr Baker) Gary aggressively questioned if he was medically trained and had any qualifications to question his doctor. He then stated if we didn't do the surgery and our pet passed, how would you feel? No compassion, only aggression to match the pushiness of Dr Baker. While my husband did agree if our dog had passed we would have been sad, I can also say if we had taken Dr Bakers other advice and euthanized our dog on Friday, I would have been even more devastated knowing how bad the recommendations were as he is still with us today with no issues other than healing from a seemingly unnecessary surgery. I wish I had done more research on who would be operating on my dog because it turns out she is a recent graduate that is especially interested in surgery so it seems she put her personal interests over the well being of my dog and there are several other complaints calling her out specifically. She should not be making these kind of decisions or be operating on her own. I understand everyone has to start somewhere but you cant be a bull in a china shop when it comes to the life of someone's pet.

We followed Dr. Cox from a local clinic, to her own mobile service, to her smaller private practice and now the beautiful new facility in Cape Carteret. She and her incredible staff always go above and beyond for our fur babies. There's no one else I'd trust more with the most valued things in my life. This visit, in particular, I want to thank Dr. Word, Dr. Cox, Amanda, Katie, Meilani and Cindy for being so exceptional, skilled and patient. We love our vet family. Never hesitate to choose Island Pet for your furry family members.

I went on their reviews but cannot since they are closed. Seen she closed due to things be too high of cost. I've seen many pets from the last 6 months misdiagnosed. My dog Octavia was one of those. A mini Australian shepherd. She wanted to rush surgery so many times I wanted to wait because she had no idea what it was. She diagnosed her with a blockage. Made me feed her all day til her next appointment actually my dog had hurt her tailbone and neck bone because she plays roughly. She was blocked up from poop then filled with so much food and was in pain. She vomiting up through the tube during surgery and was literally dying. Which medication was given and I was charged for to not make her vomit. Dr. Cox spoke to my mother because I was at work and she said that she was in over her head I then had to rush my dog to Wilmington. Where I had to live her for 24 hours. I live in New Bern mind you I drove to Wilmington back and forth to get her. She came back traumatized and hasn't been the same since that's the only reason I looked them up and saw them permanently closed. I myself nursed her back to health with the help of steroids and and pains meds. It took over a month she's left with a huge scar as a reminder of who was supposed to save her failed her. Which island pet vet charged me for and never gave those same meds. I paid the bill because I don't care about money I valued my dogs life more at the time. But now she's angry nips at other dogs because she was traumatized of what happened. I love her so she will never go anywhere reactive now or not. Karma has it ways :)

MY DOG IS DEAD. I'd give them zero stars if I could…read more My 2-year-old German Shepherd went into this clinic happy and full of life. He never came home the same. Within days of surgery he was vomiting, not eating, losing weight, and fighting a severe infection. I fought for him with every vet visit and medication they gave but he DIDN'T survive. He came out sick, suffering, and fighting for survival and now HE IS GONE. What makes this unbearable is how the clinic handled it. When I begged for answers and accountability, I was met with condescension, dismissiveness, and zero compassion. My dog is dead at just two years old, and the people responsible refused to even acknowledge their role or offer any help. They tried to blame his "congenital defects" and anything else they could come up with, rather than admit their lack of competency and failure to truly look at all the facts. His care felt half-hearted, reactive, and sloppy until it was too late. When I met with the owner, Dr. Stelma, after my dog died, I was treated with arrogance and coldness. He was rude, dismissive, kept checking his watch while I was pouring out my grief, and made it painfully clear he cared more about money and his practice's image than the lives of the animals trusted to him. Ranger was my family. He slept by my side every night since he was 8 weeks old. Now I am left devastated, heartbroken, and furious. If you love your pet, DO NOT RISK THEIR LIFE HERE. I hope this shows you the risks of this place.

The vet that we were using was absolutely useless and after 3 times, we just gave up on her. A friend suggested Dr. Selma, we went and saw an immediate improvement. Dr. Selma went over Ollie from head to tail, told us what he thought might be wrong in language that we could understand, explained the tests that he was going to have to run to back up his diagnosis and when the tests backed his diagnosis up, he went over everything that we needed to do to get Ollie better. He never rushed us, got back to us quickly when we had questions (they have the best answering machine message ever) and followed trough his recuperation every step of the way. In the middle of all of this, we had to put our cat to sleep. The kindness and compassion that they showed us was amazing. The thing that I like the best about this whole practice is that everyone there is terrific; from the person that answers the phone, to the person that fills your prescriptions. At one time, I worked for a Vet in New York. He was terrific but he was no Dr. Selma!!!! We cannot recommend him enough. Ollie is doing great!!!!

They also work closely with Island Cat Allies (a local cat rescue). They make rescues a priority and treat them and our 3 cats as their own.
