The West Pier is a very sad story in the annals of heritage in the UK…read more Ther UK's only pier to be listed as grade I status was built in 1863-66 to the design of Eugenius Birch, embellished by the Victorians and Edwardians with magnificent concert and entertainment halls. Sectioned off for security reasons in World war II, it nevertheless survived the war to become a victim instead of the general post-War decline of the British seaside resort. Closed as a dangerous structure in 1975, repeated efforts to restore it were thwarted by delays, arguments and red tape. Salvation seemed at hand when, at last, the West Pier Trust had raised sufficient funds and had attracted successful lottery grants. Planning permission for its restoration had only just been secured when it succumbed in 2002 to a violent storm which damaged part of the concert hall deck, followed by two very suspicious and well-organised arson attacks in 2003. Plans are still continuing to restore the Pier, through developing a new tower attraction on the landward side. Best of luck to them. In the meantime, the twisted wreckage is testimony to a national heritage disgrace.

The West Pier has a beautiful, poetic sadness about it. Since the arson attacks in 2003, it has…read morebecome an iconic representation of Brighton. The image of the burning pier is a favourite among local photographers who, seven years on, are still selling their awe-inspiring photographs in local galleries. The sight of the sun setting behind the burnt-out remains is the most romantic scene in the city and I desperately hope that those who want it demolished don't get their way. It will be a very sad day indeed when the remains finally collapse and sink into the water. Head down to the seafront with your camera or sketchbook while you still have the chance to enjoy this inspiring, haunting structure.

Goldstone Valley News / Goldstone Valley Post Office. I accidentally happened upon this post…read moreoffice/newsagents about a year ago and found the two women who usually work there really friendly, and the place is quite quiet, so I decided to use it as my regular post office, even though it's a bit out of my way. In recent months, my business has been selling a lot on eBay, so I've spent a lot of money here. It would be easier for me to print off the postage online and just come in to get the proof of postage stamped, but I wanted to support this post office instead. However, yesterday I was treated so badly by the woman serving (I think the co-owner sadly not the lovely lady I usually speak to), that I won't be going back there ever again. I was left feeling so embarrassed (for myself and for her). To cut a long story short, she got the wrong end of the stick and started yelling at me, and wouldn't listen to/didn't understand me trying to explain. But to give the longer version she told me she was tired after a long day and didn't want to have to deal with me :/ I NEVER complain and I hate making a fuss, so I just very calmly said that I was sorry to hear she'd had a stressful day (no, I wasn't being sarcastic), but she shouldn't take it out on her customers. She didn't take too kindly to this, to say the least. I tried to calm her down and explain what I meant, but she just kept repeating herself. Obviously I don't think she's stupid, so I just think she wasn't listening to what I was saying at all. When I tried to explain that I'd had problems at other post offices in the past with the whole large letter vs. packet thing, she said she didn't care about other post offices, this was HER post office. But surely there are standard guidelines on item size across all post offices??? She also didn't care what my computer says, I don't know why she started talking about my computer! Basically, even if I had been in the wrong (I wasn't!), there's no way she should have behaved the way she did. She wouldn't listen to me and basically told me to stop talking and she was going to ask me to leave in a minute. I couldn't believe what was happening, it was so ridiculous. I would have burst out laughing at this point if I hadn't been so annoyed and frustrated. But I could see I was fighting a losing battle, so I just paid and leftnever to return! So basically, I won't be going back there. Ever. Hopefully this woman will leave dealing with the public to her employees, who are lovely. I think it's safe to assume she was having a bad day and decided to vent on me, a loyal customer who had done nothing wrong. It made for an excellent lesson in what NOT to do if you want to offer good customer service. If you're in the area and need a post office or convenience store, there are several other places nearby a post office/One Stop store (Nevill Road), Co-Op (also Nevill Road), and a very good newsagents in Woodland Parade, by Woodland Drive, to name just a few.

Six days later the item I sent first class to be signed for has not arrived at it's destination. I am afraid the woman seemed so strange that I would not be surprised if she had thrown my package in the bin. Hopefully this is not the case and the item will reach its destination. In any event I will not be using this post office again.
