I'm going to start this review by stating that I am *not* a gardener - I like looking at gardens, but I'm definitely not someone who likes getting my hands dirty ;) My partner, on the other hand, LOVES gardening, and has been a member of the Diggers Club for a few years. After a big night out in the city, I suggested that we swing past the Diggers shop in the Botanic Gardens, since we hadn't visited before. Unfortunately, parking was a bit difficult on Plane Tree Drive, but it was still quite nice to walk across the lawns to get to the shop. And what a shop! Although I don't like gardening, I am an artist, so appreciate the aesthetics of this establishment - all the pretty seeds lining one wall! My partner was in heaven - she loved the fact that they don't stock everything in the catalogue, but only the plants that need to be planted now. The seeds that should be sown now are labelled as such - it's all very practical. The staff are very friendly, and are knowledgeable - I assume they may have some sort of horticultural background. All in all, this is a place that even non-gardeners can appreciate! read more

I love Diggers. I love their online shop, the newsletters, the various awesome things you get as a member of the Diggers club, not just the discount on plants and supplies. The store in the Botanic Gardens is a bright, airy space, with beautiful glass overhead and is situated close to the cafe and overlooking the Mediteranean Garden. There's a wide selection of seedlings out the front and various tools as well. Inside is more supplies for the garden and a wall full of seeds, just about every seed you can imagine and then some more! The staff are very friendly and helpful, and there's a coin jar if you want a plastic bag. And if you want to take a look at the beautiful Museum of Botanical History, the door to that is adjacet to the Diggers shop. So you can look at history, then have a coffee, then buy some plants and stuff for the garden! Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in gardening, whatever your knowledge and skill level may be. read more

I am MAD for this shop! Diggers is like the ultimate of ultimate shops for a gardener like myself. No.1: It is in the middle of the most beautiful part of the Adelaide CBD, The Botanic Gardens. No.2: To get to the entrance, you have to wade through a barrage of beautiful, healthy plants. Quite different to the often half-dead specimens you find at some chain hardware stores. No.3: Once inside, you are faced with a enticingly displayed array of gardening implements. They look so beautiful that suddenly you realise you really do need a potato rake/scoop because suddenly you've bought a bag of purple seed potatoes and a potato growing bag. No.4: The staff are so incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and relaxed. And why wouldn't you be relaxed? Working in such peaceful surrounds. No.5: THE WALL OF SEED!! There is an astounding collection of seeds that The Diggers Club has collated over the years. Many of them are available in the shop. Seeds are the easiest and cheapest way to get into gardening. There are clear instructions on the packets, and you can always ask the friendly staff for assistance if you are a little unsure what to buy. (See point no.4) No.6: You can sign up for The Diggers Club in store if you wish, to receive discount on pretty much everything. Plus you can avail yourself of the workshops they run throughout the year. Get thee to the Diggers Shoppe, and get gardening! read more

This summer I started a veggie patch. Growing tomatoes is like watching paint dry, except for two main differences: 1. Paint dries much quicker. 2. You can eat them without getting lead poisoning. As lame as it sounds, gardening is a commitment. So starting strong and planting something worthwhile is a big deal. That's where Diggers Garden Shop comes in. Their expert advise can save valuable time and back ache. You can buy diggers plants in Bunnings, but without the specialised knowledge. They have a super wide range of seeds and plants, which includes some normal ones. But the best part of Diggers is the Heirloom varieties, the 'freaks' outside the scope of commercial production. I'm growing: green zebra tomatoes, mini sweet chocolate capsicums and a wild assortment of beet roots. 50 bucks and you can become a member, which gets you a 30% discount on plants and seeds, some bathroom reading material and a few other bits and bobs. The only reason you wouldn't shop at diggers would be the price... but I don't recall it being overly pricy. Two (green) thumbs up, man. read more

Diggers Club is one of the best, and most exclusive gardening stores in Adelaide and it is a rare gift for Adelaide to be exposed to a great store. The Diggers Club started as an online phenomenon where you could join as a member and then buy the products online. But now they have branched out into physical stores with the Botanic Garden site the only one in South Australia. The staff are very friendly and will help you with your gardening needs, offering great advice on growing and mulching and the best weather conditions for your plants or food products. The shop is very well set out and there is a convenient little coffee shop next door if you need a hot drink break after all of your vigorous shopping. Also, if you join as a member on the website you receive discounts and if you buy lots of products this can create some really good savings. read more

Diggers are an Australian gardening group with a focus on seeds that grow into veges that are suited to our climate, hardy, flavoursome. This might sound like the kind of stuff you could find at Bunnings, but unlike the major gardening outlets Diggers specialises in varieties that are hard to find at your usual garden place. You will find varieties here that have been shafted from commercial use because they aren't suited to mass-production, but still have qualities that make them attractive to small time amateur gardeners. Their specialities include heirloom tomatoes, excellent strawberries, unique melon varieties. The Company is also 'climate-positive' - meaning they reduce and neutralise their CO2 output. The political intention of the company is to encourage people to reduce their carbon emissions by growing their own food and to resist the homogenisation of plant varieties by the big companies like Monsanto. Heavy stuff. Well, not really. I'm just an amateur gardener and I certainly don't grow enough to feed myself all year round. But I like to try my hand at gardening and at least reducing what I need to buy from supermarkets. I save quite a bit of money growing herbs and easy-to-grow veges. And some of them do taste better than from the shops. I've been buying seeds from Digger's and places like them for a while now, so I was happy to find that they have opened a store in Adelaide at the Botanic Gardens. There is a huge range of bizarre varieties I've never heard of here, and could never find at the shops or Bunnings. This summer I grew a delicious yellow bell variety of zuchinni that had a stronger flavour than the green ones I always buy from the shops. There is a lot to try out and learn here, and apparently in the new year they will be running workshops. read more
