I was worried that the tourist attraction would lack gastronomically. Thankfully, I was wrong. I arrived to find a large tour group dining and only one free table left. Throughout my meal, I witnessed many diners turned away because they were booked up (this was on a Monday night), so make sure to come early or make a reservation. If you want the best view of the nautical decor, reserve a table on the upper level. My drink and food orders were taken promptly even though they were BUSY. I ordered the Rostocker Export draught to start. It was a great pour and went perfectly with my food. I ordered the pumpkin ginger soup and I sat there for 10-15 minutes with my taste buds blown. It was served hot, with dark bread croutons and pumpkin oil. It was smooth but thick and warmed my entire body. I ordered the sauteed herring with potatoes and green beans (Frisch gebratene Ostseeheringe mit deftigen grünen Speckbohnen und Bratkartoffeln) as my entree. I hadn't had a fish with bone-in in a long time, so eating it was a bit of a challenge for me. The flavors were great but the dish overall was a tad heavy. Both the potatoes and green beans are sauteed in bacon grease. I left feeling content and fit in a nice 15-minute walk before getting on the bus back to Berlin. I will definitely bring friends along next time.

The staff are friendly and perhaps you can also get the Platt-Deutsch menu and learn some words also! Food was amazing here, the Schweineschnitzel (deep fried pork cutlet) was amazing! Fried to perfection and the pork had great texture and flavor, definitely my favorite dish out of the three. The German Sausage was also great, the curry sauce was spicy but not to the point where it covers all taste buds! But I get ahead of myself... Altstaedter Stuben is, as the name implies, located in Rostocks Altstadt (old town district), and serves German classics. The decor in the front room was neat but informal, otherwise nothing to write home about. The service was good, and the waiter kindly let us practise our German language skills (or lack thereof) even though he seemed fluent in English. My partner and I both opted for the "Stielkotelett vom Duroc," or pork chop, which came with potatoes, turnips, mixed vegetables and a mustard sauce that had a little bite but not too much so it didn't steal your attention. The chop was topped with a twig of thyme, and finally the whole thing had been sprinkled with dried flower petals, which both looked good and added a whiff of much needed spring to a grey March day. I'd like to visit Rostock again at a warmer time of year. If and when that happens I'll be sure to come back here.

As its name indicated, it is on a lake, its setting one of complete tranquility, broken only bird song and the occasional splash of a fish in the water. The rooms are perfectly furnished and stylish. The bow-fronted dining room looks out across the grass to the lake, each table having its own window and view. The decor is light, the atmosphere soft, the furnishings subtle and playful, an unobtrusive display of the owners' refined and creative tastes. Each evening the restaurant offers a fixed four-course menu (thus saving diners the anxiety of choice) with the option of carefully selected, accompanying wines . The food I had was superlative (this is one of those rare Michelin starred restaurant) in creativity, ingredients, preparation and presentation. Whether it was venison in filo pastry, turbot on mountain lentils, or, in a crescendo of tenderness, three cuts of lamb from Lake Müritz, each course seemed to top its predecessor. The wines were bright and subtle in flavors, colors and contrasts. The service was so unobtrusive, the pace so relaxed, that the meal seemed to appear of its own accord. Dessert came with a Vermouth La Copa, which balanced two sherries like voices in a choir. If you stay overnight you have the added pleasure of breakfast, a quietly lavish spread of breads, cheeses, meats and fruits, gleaming jewel-like in the morning sun.
