I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to house maintenance. We had to repaint a bedroom wall and so I came here since they sell the paint I needed and the old paint can listed their SE location. First visit, I ordered online, the cashier told me to just call them next time since purchasing online cost more (not exactly sure about that, haven't compared prices). Then I went back for more paint because... I don't know what I'm doing and wasted a lot of paint. The 2nd time around, I asked many more questions and asked for tips. I was also trying to coordinate with my partner over the phone while in store with an employee helping me. - The employee so patient and understanding with me being on the phone. They then proved their patience with me going to my car and coming back inside THREE TIMES with more questions. Prices are reasonable, the tools sold there are about the same price as Ace Hardware. The employees are super nice and so very helpful. They had recommendations and answers for everything. There was no pressure to buy more or go for the more expensive option. They had tools that were on the price spectrum, there were cheaper options, midgrade and more expensive. They pointed out each tool, gave their rec and left it up to me to decide. I love that I can buy paint AND materials without feeling like I paid extra for materials because of the convenience. They get busy but they are also well staffed and take their time with customers. I never had to wait more than a few minutes. They also have some Spanish speaking staff and it sounded like they have good relationships with their Spanish speaking customers. Here's what I learned: -One quart of paint technically covers about 100 ft², but in reality, probably more like 60 to 80 ft², especially considering if you don't know what you're doing. My first mistake - getting one quart, 2nd visit, I definitely got the full size can. -After you're done painting use the rollers to go all in one direction one last time to avoid seeing any strokes. Stick with a matte color to especially avoid seeing any strokes. -If you're repainting a wall, it's best to paint the entire wall otherwise you might see the old paint versus the new. read more

Where to begin... Ok. First of all, everytime I go in there and make a purchase (several), they 'don't have me in the system.' The reason I know this, is because sometimes I want what I bought last time, and they try to look me up to no avail. This last time, I had a question about a product I bought (polyurethane) but couldn't remember the brand, so they attempted to look me up again. Nada. So for at least the 5th time, they 'put me in the system.' lol. We'll see... Next, the ONLY reason I go to this store is to buy Benjamin Moore paint. Love that paint. And this is the closest store that sells it. :( Last time I was there, I bought some paint for my study--Coventry Gray. Beautiful color (normally), but when I painted my room gray, it turned out blue. I thought maybe it was the light, so I took a dot of paint and put it on the paint sample. It is off. Slightly, but obviously; and that's probably just enough difference to make it look blue. In this day and age with all the technology, I don't see how this error is possible. Anyway, while I was at Dick's buying my 'blue' paint, I asked the main lady there if she could recommend a good poly for my wood floors. She responded enthusiastically (confidently I assumed) and whisked a specific can (brand and sheen) off the shelf and handed it to me. I bought it and coated my floors and am not pleased with the lack of durability. So when I returned to the store most recently, I mentioned my conundrum and asked if they could recommend a more durable brand/type, etc. So they 'looked me up in the system' to see what brand I had purchased, and low-and-behold, I still wasn't there! smh. Nevertheless... I came in for another can of BM paint--Woodlawn Blue--to paint my foyer. Despite the color 'snaffu' on the Coventry Gray, I did really like the way that particular paint covered--so creamy and thoroughly. I've used a lot of paint, and a lot of different brands, types, etc., and I have never had one go on this well--esp on 'new' walls! (It was BM Advanced). I had simply asked for one of the less expensive versions of BM paint when I picked the Coventry Gray, and this is what the 'experts' sold me (as it turns out, a wood surface paint). No problem, it was reasonable and covered well. Anyway, so when I went back in to buy the Woodlawn Blue (and ask about the poly), I said I wanted that 'Advanced' paint I bought last time. The guy behind the counter said 'that's just for wood.' Huh? So, I said, I really liked it and wanted that again, and he was adamant it was the wrong paint for the job. Soooo... being female and automatically assuming I must be mistaken, I let him talk me into 'Regal.' $47.50! I asked for 'Ben,' their entry level paint, but he insisted Ben is not washable (does Ben know? lol) and that I needed at least Regal. (BTW, 'Advanced' was $30.) Just for the record... I have never washed a wall. Ever. Too bad they couldn't just look me up in the system... smh. I mean, you really think I didn't have them 'put me in the system' after some of this??? Oh, and that lady that's always there who sold me that can of poly? She 'had no memory' of that interaction whatsoever--never saw me before! Unbelievable!!! Ok, now for today. Sigh. I painted the Regal Woodlawn Blue in my foyer yesterday (and it did NOT go on as well as the Advanced). After having spent weeks on the internet googling photos of painted rooms in that color and studying paint samples to the nth degree... It turned out really dark and harsh. Now my foyer relies on natural light from neighboring rooms, so I figured I needed a softer color. And seeing as how it was going to need a second coat ANY way... (my study only needed one coat). So before driving alllllll the way over there, I decided to call them and tell them my situation and see if they had something to suggest (like another shade, etc.). And the smart...ss that answered the phone said 'uh, paint it another color.' Wow, why didn't I think of that?! OMG. I was really hoping for a more helpful response--from 'paint experts,' like idk, a suggested shade, etc.??Sherwin Williams is looking better and better, plus, they're closer! Oh-forgot to mention, that 'Regal' paint needs two coats. I was only painting over 'builder beige,' but it DEFINITELY appears thin. I mean, 95 friggin dollars to paint my tiny foyer... MYSELF?! Buyer beware check your colors before you leave the store! They miss-mixed two colors on two different paints on one project. Went back to the store to fix the mistake and received the run a round. The numbers on the cans didn't match the numbers on the color cards. They wouldn't fix their mistakes. Had to go to another Benjamin Moore retailer and reorder the two paints. Dicks color center is fantastic. Great customer service. Sometimes with specialty stores you end up paying higher prices than at a big box store. That is absolutely not true with Dicks. I've compared and their prices are better on their paint and painting supplies than a big box store that carries Benjamin Moore. They also carry little jars of pre-made paint samples that are under $4, which is much better deal than most other stores - particularly if you are like me and always need to buy a ton of samples to figure out the right color. I live by the Beaverton store and work by the Milwaukie store. The Beaverton store is nicer because they have a color designer to assist you and they have books of every bm color that are about 6 x 6 in size to make it much, much easier to see the difference in each color. The only negative is that they aren't open on Sunday's which is really inconvenient. read more
