One of the most wonderful things this great group does is put bronze sculptures and monuments all around Tulsa and most eye-catching--along River Parks on Riverside Dr. While visiting Tulsa, I was captivated by this public art. The annual NatureWorks Art Show and Sale helps to fund much of their work. At these Art Shows, supporters can browse paintings, sculptures and wooden carvings by the top wildlife, western and landscape artists across the United States. 30% of each art sale goes toward supporting the development and conservation of Oklahoma's natural habitats, as well as the creatures who live in and depend upon those habitats. What a wonderful group! I think the sculptures along the River Parks are amazing and so is NatureWorks!

I took this as a sign and finally checked it out. I'm so glad I did! It was a slow day so I took my time to walk all around the store while asking questions. Turns out it's an artist co-op nonprofit. Several artists came together to start it in 2020 to showcase unique creations and offer one-of-a-kind, handmade and specialty items from 40+ local artists and artisan makers. The name was inspired by Leon Russell's "Hummingbird" song, which is appropriate since the Church Studio is a block away. You can find a wide array of items, from clothing and jewelry, to glasswork, mosaics, pottery, photographs, woodwork, and more. I found a really cute fall mini frame, bead earrings, and a sun catcher, all one of a kind, beautiful, and affordable. If you like a particular artist, they have all their cards at the register. They accept special requests and commissions, and are also able to ship. They display artwork from Tulsa Public School students and have special art events, and workshops. Follow them on Facebook for updates!

If you've been in my circle for any length of time, then you likely already know that I'm quite…read moreinvolved in social justice work and commit quite a bit of my time to the area of violence prevention. As I began winding down my most established event, the Tenderness Tour, I began exploring ways to remain active without the ongoing physical demand of touring. As a lover of labyrinths, I decided to begin exploring the idea of building a labyrinth. For a while, I looked specifically at building a heart-shaped labyrinth. Eventually, I made my way to the relatively small town of Tonkawa, Oklahoma - currently noted as the home for the only heart-shaped labyrinth known as the "Heart in the Park Labyrinth." It is easily one of my favorite labyrinths in the country. Tonkawa artist Audrey Schmitz began envisioning the labyrinth in 2006 as Oklahoma neared its centennial celebration. The town supported the vision and internationally recognized labyrinth builder Marty Kermeen was contracted. Ground was broken in November 2006. On Valentine's Day 2007, a personalized paver campaign began. Kermeen worked with British labyrinth historian (NOTE: I want that title) Jeff Saward to design the labyrinth - the only public one of its kind in the world and one of four park labyrinths in Oklahoma. Construction began on May 16, 2007 and was completed on June 3, 2007. However, Kermeen returned in September to install the entry plaza and Grand Heart Walk with personalized pavers. The Heart in the Park Labyrinth has a 45-foot diameter and a seven circuit dual path. The golden limestone crossover crowning the goal features river flint from the historic Yellow Bull Crossing and a walking path outlining the labyrinth is bordered by a timeline of 100 engraved pavers recording Tonkawa's history from 1879 to the present. Brick plaques spell out the word Tonkawa and the phrases They All Stay Together and Wheatheart of Oklahoma. Heart in the Park is considered a permanent public, interactive art installation in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. It's not easy to tell from photos, but Heart in the Park is actually located inside Centennial Park. This allows it to get a lot of use and for special events to unfold around it. As I continue to move toward developing a labyrinth here in Indianapolis, the Heart in the Park Labyrinth remains one of my favorite labyrinths that I've visited and experienced.
