I dialysed here for a year and it has it's good points and bad.
This is a 9 bed unit situated in a portokabin. Princess Diana opened it 20 years ago and since then the roof leaks, the floor is uneven and you can't fit a trolley through any of the doors. All that aside it's a great place. They did encourage you to participate, taking the time to explain bloods, machine setup, why diet restrictions mattered (get it wong and you get to visit the cardiac care ward!) and why you can't drink more that 500ml of fluids a day. By the time I recieved my transplant I had learned how to set up my dialysis machine and was learning to insert my own needles. Because it's so small you get to make friends quite easily and the staff are great. After you've beeen there for awhile you'll notice the staff bickering, which is quite entertaing when your stuck in the chair for 4 hours, 3 times a week. The TV provision is crap, consisting of two tiny portable sets which are wall mounted and impossible to hear. During the year I was there, the hut had a slight makeover but buckets are still required on a rainy day. read more
