Before I could get to the inspection, I was side-swiped then snowploughed by a dump truck who was too impatient to get into my lane. I was taken to the hospital (shock and bit of whiplash) and my car was towed to another auto repair facility without my knowledge or consent. It cost me hundreds to get it back out and the repair facility told me my car was unsafe to drive, that it was basically going to explode due to a ruptured fuel tank, and that it would cost me $3800 to make it road-safe again. The car was worth $1000.
I called Dex to cancel the inspection. He asked why the car wasn't brought to him and I said I had no idea, I wasn't there. He instructed me to go get my car. He talked me through a comprehensive inspection - as a noobie car owner, even I could see there was no ruptured fuel tank: there was no smell of gas, the pavement under the car was dry and dusty with no wet spots anywhere, and when i turned on the battery, the fuel needle was at the exact same spot as before. The car started on the first turn of the key and I drove it with the four-ways on the 800 metres to Dex Auto.
He jumped in the car, drove off, and came back a half-hour later with coffee. He tossed me the keys, said "You need to fix that back window, otherwise the car is fine. It's not pretty any more, but it's running fine." And so it was.
I drove that car, dents, dings, scars, and all, for another year and a half until it was kidney-beaned by a Lexus coming out of a side street at high speed. (the Lexus was obliterated).
