My trip from Amsterdam to Prague was supposed to take 13 hours and ended up being 22 hours due to multiple late arrivals causing me to miss trains. I got stuck in Berlin for 8 hours and had to pay an extra 65 euros for a night train, which 1) I can only get a 25% refund for and 2) I can't even figure out how to do that because the online process is frustrating and difficult to deal with. I have had the supreme DISpleasure of taking three trains with DB and ALL three have had an issue. My train from Paris to Stuttgart was delayed, and then they cancelled because of a WW2 bomb. No big deal, not your fault...but do you know what is your fault, telling us for over TWO hours that busses are coming and then telling us, nope, they are not, good luck finding a way to Your city. I had a 3 hour trip turn into a 10 hour trip. Then I had a train from Stuttgart and that train was over 25 minuets late getting to Zurich. Then my train back from Zurich to Stuttgart was cancelled and then changed. I was told to take train A and switch. But guess what?!?! That train was also cancelled! I had to then wait for another hour! You need to do EVERYTHING BETTER!! In my mind, your company is trash, and I cannot wait to NEVER use your services again. And save the, you can have a partial refund crap for the tourists. You will NEVER refund anything, because you purposely make it so complicated that most people give up. One poor experience and it clears out all the good experiences. Yep, that's what happened here, though it was technically TWO poor experiences. The first was the complete failure of the S-Bahn from the Munich airport to the Hauptbahnhof. We left a bag on a train and have gotten zero help from Deutsche Bahn. Yes it's our fault for leaving it on the train. We fortunately have it airtagged. It's been sitting in their train depot for three days now. We've done what they have asked and filed a report however they can not tell us when we can get the bag yet. There is no phone number for the depot, they don't know anyone who works in the depot, they just drop off the bags randomly. There is no one taking initiative or helping us in any sort of way. We can't be the first person to leave their bag on a train, there should be a system. At this point it feels like they have stolen our bag and the items in it for themselves. Late trains, cancelled trains, overcrowded trains along with last minute cancellations leading to more confusion and overcrowding. I had a First Class reservation going from Frankfurt to Munich which was the most pleasant of my ICE experiences but my Munich to Frankfurt was my worst experience with a cancelled train. At first when I was told the train was cancelled I was told the incorrect location of where the next train would be and that I would need to get a stamp on my printed out ticket and that I would be refunded the difference between my First Class ticket and the finding any available seat downgrade chaos that would ensue. I never received any refund so it just seems you gamble with a First Class reservation if the train is cancelled you lose most of your money. I just don't understand this as I have never have had such problems witth the TGV in France amd clearly Germans have better reputations as engineers than the French so I'm not sure what the issue is? read more

It was our first time traveling around Germany. We bought in Munich our metro tickets as expected, but it turns out they still needed to be validated, we didn't know about that. When we were leaving for the airport, the ticket inspectors came up to us and rudely started to pester and shout that we had violated the rules and hadn't validated our tickets and couldn't explain what had happened, even though we had paid for the tickets and showed receipts and dates, that everything was fine except for the validation. And the ticket inspectors didn't want to help us or explain how to do it, and in the end they wrote us a fine of 60 euros each and also the money we spent on the tickets. It was just robbery out of thin air or a way to make money - it was just disgusting. After that, we were simply disgusted by such service, unfriendly employees who didn't want to help, and overall a spoiled impression of Germany thanks to this situation and the rude metro employees. read more

This service is an absolute joke. Not only do German people deserve MUCH better service from their transportation services - any human living in or travelling through Germany deserves better - we pay taxes on every purchase, and this company is failing in its service. Every time I have used this service in the past 2 years I have been shocked by the lack of seating provided _for paying customers_ - usually I have noted that approximately 50-80 people are crammed into the walkways in each carriage, sometimes for many hours - keep in mind there are usually at least 5 carriages, so that's potentially up to 400 paying customers who don't even have the space to sit on the floor, let alone a seat, for every journey - how many journeys operate daily? Does this mean that thousands or paying customers are travelling like this every day? Are we really settling for this 19th century transportation solution? Also, in 35 degree heat there is often no air conditioning. I was literally on a train that stopped in some tiny town 2 weeks ago because a child had to be taken away by an Ambulance because of heat related issues. Yes, that is right, these services are so lacking that children are literally cooking. Can you really say this is okay? Why are the elected representatives of the Federal Republic of Germany not providing a solution for the thousands of people that are being left behind with these public services? (I know they're private, this is likely the problem, classic privatisation of PUBLIC services. Derp.) This is not good enough, and anyone who tells you it is good enough doesn't use it. Yet again the working class is being left behind. For the 'leading' country of the European Union, this is a sad joke - I do not care about national reputations though, I care about the families who can't even travel in safe ways with their children, or the many people who have health problems who have to deal with this industrial era transportation. Because of DB, I was 90 minutes late for work this morning (three trains cancelled with no warning)...and now I am already waiting more than an hour to go home (train says it's delayed right now, but I expect it will be cancelled since it's already more than 45 minutes late). I normally review my trips in TripAdvisor under SVRyder but there is no place I could find to review DB Trains but I wanted to share my experience in Yelp so others can be informed of what could happen and a tip to protect yourself in case something goes wrong. Two stars because when it works, it's great. I completed a 10 day trip to Germany with mixed reviews of the DB train system and wanted to share my experience so others can be ready for what could happen. The good is the trains are modern and fast when it moves but are often late. Despite it being a popular form of transport my german colleagues complain about it. My trip from Frankfurt to Hanover experienced a less than 10 min delay and was moving at 200km/hr at some points. My next ride on DB from Berlin to Frankfurt was canceled and I found out 3hrs before departure. I found another way to get Frankfurt and tried to get a refund. The DB customer service person at Frankfurt airport was helpful. You can mail it in but I'm glad I tried to get a refund in person as he helped explain some of the info they wanted and called his supervisors to help. Eventually, I found out DB can refund you if you have a european bank or offer a voucher of same value that expires in a year. Cannot refund my american credit card. Other than that, you lose your money. My advice is to download their app so you are informed of any changes via notifications and pay with a credit card company that will work with you to refund your money. US credit companies are good at that. I hope this review helps other travelers who are looking to use the DB trains. read more

I purchased a ticket from the window in Duren for Karlsruhe. On.the train from Kohn to Mains the conductor told me my ticket wasn't good on this route, that I needed to take the red trains. My misunderstanding. He said I needed to purchase another ticket for this train. No problem. Then, he got angry and very short with me. This is completely unnecessary! Where do I begin... on Sunday the December 10th, my train stops due to few inches of snow, and the DB's entire international train services grinds to a halt. Okay that's somewhat understandable, but what gets me is the appalling lack of service and the 5 hours of delays that ensued. The DB staff basically told me either I can get on a local train going to the nearest destination or stay where I am stuck. If I was rude or entitled, I can see where they were coming from, but when a customer politely asks how he can get to his destination, such rudeness is just uncalled for. Fast forward to today (Wednesday), I am stuck in a disabled high speed international train facing yet another 4 or more hours in a train going back home, and once I get to my next stop I will be stranded yet again to fend for myself. I mean, multiple major failures in the span of 4 days is just ridiculous by any standards, let alone Western European standards that many Europeans seem to pride themselves in. I hope DB marketing team cares enough to read some of these reviews and try to make amends for their staffs' egregious behavior. This is the WORST train system! We had tickets for the ICE 602 from Munich to Berlin on August 4th. We were stranded on this train all along the route, spending up to 3.5 hours sitting on the tracks in one place alone. Our train took on passengers from another train, people were standing in the aisles, and the dining car ran out of food and drinks. There were many babies and children on board who were exhausted. DB trains are bad and several of their staff are as well. My train was running late enough I knew I wasn't going to make my connection... But the conductor in Osnabrück refused to let me on the earlier train that would have let me make my connection. So I'm 2 hours later getting in... Well after midnight. The guy in the restaurant car from Amersfoort to Osnabrück wasn't very friendly. And many others were quite gruff. The power outlets didn't work on the train from Amersfoort to Osnabrück and they didn't work from Osnabrück to Hamburg either. The customer service guy in Hamburg told they only had pay toilets... When my first class ticket allowed me into a lounge with free ones (but I didn't find out in time). The lines at the ticket area in Hamburg were very long. Ugh! I didn't realize Germany was such a cluster and I certainly expected much better from DB. :-( read more

Worst experience ever. Trains delayed,dirty and staff did not show up at all. Many 5 and 10 minutes stops in the middle of nowhere. We had booked a non stop journey with the EC from Munich to Venice and the final result: with 2 different trains to the italian boarders, then a 180km busdrive and then they left us without any further informations or support in a small italian village train station. From where we had to take without valid tickets another 2 local trains (no internet,dirty and very old). We arrived exhausted and with a 3 hours delay. Sensitivity training for people working on the trains would also be important. Just had a discussion with one of the employees abord the train that forced me to clean something someone else left behind under threat that I would be forced to leave the train on the next station. I know that doing public service is difficult, but it is also difficult to feel confortable on a long distance train being treated like that. A trip from Dortmund Hbf to Bamberg was somewhat uneventful, but there are areas for improvement: 1. Make it simple and obvious to riders where the appropriate car is for them to find a seat. Every time the train stops, people spend more time than they ought to need, looking for the right car & seat. 2. For those who are/were unable to reserve a specific seat, once they're on, ask them if they would like staff to reserve a seat that is available all the way to their destination. I had to change seats THREE TIMES because others had reserved this or that seat for a small portion of my long trip. Don't greedily charge for this! 3. Provide clear and concise information about how riders can access the wireless internet that is "included" with their ride. I say "included" because all that is included, even for first class riders, is an option to _buy_ wireless, if you can figure out how to do it. 4. The seat I ended up in was reclined, way back, and I had to get up and walk all around looking at it before I finally figured out how to return it to an upright position, as my back ached. 5. Slow the roll on the announcements!! For anyone riding the train who is not a native speaker of German, you have a lot better chance of understanding the announcement if it is not done at 80 miles per hour. (for the metric, that's about 130 kph) Especially if the announcer is from the south, it can be a challenge to understand the announcements, and the quality of the speaker system and speed of the talking can be real impediments to the message getting through. 6. Identify a passenger who has been checked for proof he's paid and in the right section. I should not have been checked seven times on the same train in the same car, between Dortmund and Würzburg. 7. Earn that reputation for being on time, by actually being on time. I saw multiple excuses for late trains, and more than 50% of mine were NOT on time. The best excuse was Bauarbeiten; what? You didn't know that some kind of construction was going on? Um, it is 2016, we've got phone, cellphones, Internet, radio, probably other means of communicating that governments know about but not citizens, and you can't keep the trains on MAJOR routes running on time? Cost me a connection at my final destination, and an expensive taxi ride. If I paid what Germans pay for my ride, I'd have been angry and disappointed. As it is, I got a discount for paying in advance in the U.S.A. Thanks, Rick Steves. _______________________________ Now, on a separate note, let's talk a bit about the food. For one thing, it is SUBSTANTIALLY OVER-priced. But, hey, you're a captive on a train, and if the airlines can "do it to you," then why not the trains, too? The thing that miffs me, though, is how proudly Deutsche Bahn speaks of their excellent food, when, in my well-experienced palate, it isn't anything more than okay. You claim: "Deutsche Bahn restaurant cars and catering on board are revolutionizing the quality and variety of cuisine available on high-speed networks. We also recognize how important it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle while traveling, and Deutsche Bahn restaurant cars offer a selection of organic products, marked in menus on board. Whether you order a snack or sit down for dinner, our cuisine is sure to satisfy the palate of any customer." I've eaten Maultaschen (essentially a German SWABIAN version of ravioli, made of minced meat meat, spinach, bread crumbs and onions and flavored with various herbs and spices) that was frozen, which was as good as the two I had on the train. Their version of "Kalbsgeschnetzeltes Zürcher Art" (Swiss styled veal in a creamy mushroom sauce with spaetzli) was a real disappointment, and cost a whopping €25.40. It was certainly good enough to eat, but it was worth perhaps €9.50. The little forks they use seem better designed for use by children, except for the long handles they have. They're very difficult to keep little bits of pasta and meat balanced on while en route to the mouth on a moving train. I should've asked for a spoon. The beer selection is, well, LAME LAME LAME. Of the eight beers offered in the restaurant car, SIX are from Switzerland and two of those are non-alcoholic. A seventh is from Denmark, and the eighth is a wheat beer from Bavaria. The Swiss beers come in CANS. Ugh. My waiter described Feldschlössen Braufrisch as an amber or red ale; so I ordered one. It is a WHEAT BEER. When I told him this, he said I was mistaken, the Schneider Weisse is their wheat beer. The label on the can lists ingredients, two of which are Gerstenmalz (malted barley), and Weizenmalz (malted wheat). I rest my case. See my pic of the can with this review, and the meal, and lame bread, too. Deutsche Bahn, you could certainly do better, and how about more than one in eight beers being GERMAN BEER on the trains?? Bad, uncomfortable and frequently late trains. The company has also a poor communication with their clients. I advice you to NEVER pay for the BahnCard if you are not willing to use weekly. The discounts are bad and if you forget to cancel it, they will charge you for the renewal (the only communication they send is a late email with the billing after you cannot cancel it anymore). Most of the time the Flixbus makes a similar time to same destinations, with comfort and much cheaper than DB. read more

Not a good experience on several IC, ICE and regional trains at all! Trains LATE (20 min yesterday, 70+ today), unacceptable!! Missing connections, including international connections. The connecting train, could have waited for us, btw, but no, they departed on time - never mind the previous one arrived late! No one official on ANY platform to ask questions. Customer service could not reissue a booked seat, as the next train had all seats reserved/sold out - risking standing the whole trip!. No Air Con at all or barely working. Seats with tables on ICE cramped,like airline ones, not what you expect. They also sold 2 tickets on the same journey for the same seat (my seat). How is it possible with the computers?! No wifi on most trains or hardly working on ICE. WHAT A MESS! Didn't expect this at all, will avoid in the future. If you have to travel, avoid booking tight connections (less than 1 hour). I wish I could give them 0 stars. First, our train was canceled just at our stop where we were getting on, so a different train took us to the second stop to transfer onto the right train. This was now 20 minutes late which was fine. Then after an hour the train immediately stops in the middle of nowhere and the person overhead only said what was happening in German so we had no idea what was going on. We had to have a passenger translate. Two hours later and we have missed our flight from Baden-Baden. We told an attendant and explained we now had to buy a new flight and there was only one from Berlin tomorrow. We asked if we could continue on to Berlin on the train and she said it was fine and apologized for the inconvenience. Now 2 hours later a new attendant freaks out saying we don't have a ticket to berlin. My boyfriend typed out a translation and she's still freaking out saying we need to pay. A new attendant came and explained they switched staff and don't have this information. So after arguing he finally says it's fine. If I could I would've given DB zero stars. I live here since July last year and have to take the train every day because I live approximately 9 km (3 Stations) away from the city and not only that the train drives rarely, but it shows up too late on a regular basis or it doesn't even show up!! ! Here, if one wants to have a f-ing life like going out or training something, one must own a car or deal with this f-ing disgrace of a "travel company". The tickets are way too expensive for this "service". When someone complains to DB about this they simply state that it's not their fault! Not their fault???!! Excuse me, does the train drive on the street along with the cars or what??? Why the f are they always delayed when there's literally nothing wrong, like there's nothing on the railings, no crash, and the train functions just right??? What's your goddamn excuse for canceling three trains in a row??!! Just a quick warning about Probebahncard 25%!! I tried this offer from deutsche bahn at the end of last year, I needed it only for one way ticket, and as i tried to quit it, people at the customer care center were extremely unhelpful. I explained via letter and phone that since i don`t need the train as much and the trial period had expired, i would not need the offer anymore and REGARDLESS THEY EXTENDED AND FORCED ME TO PAY MEMBERSHIP FOR THE FULL YEAR!! just a warning for all, the probe bahn card from deutsche bahn is a huge scam!!!! read more

Clean trains on a timely schedule with online booking, kiosk service or in station service. There's plenty of comfortable seating available. The routes can be confusing. The staff is friendly and helpful. Announcements are in several languages including English. read more
