We worked with Design Everest to come up with a feasibility study and set of initial concepts for a home expansion. We had several zoom calls with the project manager Akanksha and the architects to discuss several design concepts and those call were pleasant. From there most of the exchanges were via e-mail with back and forth regarding updates from the feasibility study they were performing and any feedback they received from the city, in addition to reviewing design concepts. We have not proceeded with having construction drawing sets put together by Design Everest yet to submit for permitting as we have our home expansion plans on hold so we cannot speak to the experience or quality for the services during that stage. However as mentioned, the design concepts and feasibility study gave us a decent idea of what could potentially be accomplished and a framework for very basic ROM cost estimates from contractors. A couple other notes: - For the feasibility study, obtaining feedback from the city took some time with multiple attempts to reach out to the city from the architects. This is by no means any fault of Design Everest. However, even after hearing back from the city, while they provided some helpful information, it didn't provide me a ton of confidence that the expansion we were seeking with regards to square footage, parking requirements, # of bedrooms/bathrooms would be allowed by the city. In other words, it appeared to be "feasible" but without any solid "yes". - If you know exactly what you want for home expansion, remodeling, etc. in terms of any design work you want Design Everest to put together, Design Everest is great for that. They will execute on the design concepts you have in mind. However, if you are looking for an architect to provide more guidance and ideas on your expansion or remodel plans, they may not be the best fit for that. read more

We wanted to add a bathroom to our home, and given the excellent reviews for Design Everest, and our desire to support a local business (the house was in Cupertino) we called them. On the very first consult call, I expressed concern about whethe Cupertino's limits on square footage would even allow an addition. The square footage of the house and of the lot were known to the consultant on that very first call. I believe Jessica Passage was doing the consult call as far as I recall and she assured us that there was no problem on that front. So we signed a contract with them, and paid them $3K+ as the first installment. But shortly after that, the architect informed us that in fact our house was already at Cupertino's limit on square footage and we could not in fact add the bathroom. Although that ended the contract, the net result is that we paid $3K for absolutely no value at all. I had specifically asked about this issue, and was assured there was no problem on the very first call. We would gladly have paid for the consult call, though it was nominally free, but are not at all happy that we ended up paying $3k+ for zero value at all. So - beyond disappointed in Design Everest. This was a few months ago, and I hope that they will do better by their clients in the future. read more

We are building on the foundation from the previous home. Aakash and his team have gone above and beyond for the remodel that I needed structural design for. Actually, I started with them and they also referred me to my architect as well who has also done a great job. They were one of the few firms that was willing to take this project on as many other firms (politely) let me know that his was too small a project for them. Through the initial quote, revisions, deferred submittals, Aakash and his team have been thorough, prompt and have taken the time and efforts to explain to me how to move forward with the project. Structural engineering is not an inexpensive endeavor however, after getting a few bids, I went with Design Everest feeling comfortable with the value I was getting - having worked with them, I feel validated with this decision. They stuck with their word in terms of addressing all the City of Mountain View's comments and provided letters (at no additional charge) when needed to help me continue this project. Through the delays and revisions, through no fault of Design Everest, they kept to their word and provided the necessary details, calculations, drawings, etc. that allowed this project to start, progress and move forward. Their work has met all requirements set forth by the City. My contractor was equally as impressed with their designs and he was also appreciative that when he came to the engineer with requested changes in the field, that they were as agile as they were to update the plans and drawing during construction to facilitate his requested construction method. I hired Design Everest to evaluate the structural integrity of my ceiling. I have re-occurring cracks that can't be fixed by fixing the drywalls. I want to make sure that I find out the root cause before I fix the cracks cosmetically again. What I liked about Design Everest was their responsiveness. They were quick to reply to my request and was able to schedule an engineer to come in a week to evaluate the house. The engineer was able to identify the root cause and informed me the risks as well as what a proper job to fix it would be like. I'm taking off one star because of the price. It's very expensive relative to the amount of time that was spent on the actually examining the house. The engineer did spend a longer time explaining to me the science of the problem. To be fair, the price was competitive though. Other companies quoted similar price for evaluation. Overall, I got what I wanted to know, which were (1) the house is safe to live in (2) the root cause. read more

I have never given a one star review, however, I can not in good faith recommend this design firm. We have been dealing with them for months, now. I contacted them in July, and it took until October, and cost seven thousand dollars to finally get our engineering plans. With every part of receiving the plans, I felt nickeled and dimed. For each step on our path towards a finished set of plans, we were charged for one thing after another. Months later, we finally had the plans in hand. We had contractors who lived in our area (El Cerrito - prime earthquake and slide area) come and try to make a plan. What they found was alarming. The Design Everest plans were deemed unsafe. They did not take into account several fixes that were necessary in our particular neighborhood. In fact, I had another engineer who was so upset with the plans, that he wrote me a letter and signed it, asking me to report Design Everest to the board of Engineers! After that, I did not feel safe using the plans. Although Design Everest replied with their own explanations, I felt like I needed to get a second opinion. I had new Engineering plans written up by a local, highly respected engineer. They cost me $1,500 and he did them in FIVE days! After I got the second engineer's plans, several contractors finally responded to my requests for bids (something that was certainly NOT happening with the Design Everest plans) I am not sure what happened here. I am not an expert in drafting, engineering or contracting. But I do know how I feel about the whole situation. I feel like we threw good money after bad. And I am heartsick that so much valuable time was spent on this. If you live in an earthquake sensitive area, and you need to get seismic work done on your home, PLEASE read my advice - do not go with this firm. They contract their work out, and you may get an engineer who has NO IDEA about your area, and your county's requirements and needs. Do yourself a favor and hire someone who is local. Someone who has worked on homes in your neighborhood. Someone with a good local reputation. Good luck to you! read more

There were quite a few errors in the plans and title 24 assessment. We have specifically asked for our needs and our contacts dodge answering questions fully, or are not clear. Communication is greatly lacking and it's hard to get a hold of someone. We still have no resolution to our issues months in, but I don't anticipate them being resolved quickly at this pace. DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY. I needed a structural engineer to do a report for the local building inspector. The structural engineer they sent stayed less than 15 minutes and wrote a short, pathetic report. When I received the report, I called the company and told them that this report is completely insufficient, but they assured me that it would be accepted by the inspector. Of course, the inspector forced me to redo the work. When I informed Design Everest of this, they initially said they would work with me and then stopped returning my calls and emails. Our main architect was Roman(??) who did a stupendous job from start to finish. My Project was complicated and city of san jose planning deptt was not of any help but design everest team not only helped us meet all the permit requirements but also helped in addressing all the city comments hence getting construction permits. Even during the construction if we had any problem, design.e was right there to help us. I dont know where i would be today without them ,maybe/probably just lost in permit process. I hired Design Everest (DE) to do an engineering study with lateral analysis for an addition on a second story of a townhouse (so... complicated). I got three quotes, two from solo engineers and another from DE. The prices was very similar (actually DE was the lowest, but barely so). The solo engineers both had very limited customer service skills, was slow to respond, and/or seemed offended by my requests to communicate the need to keep townhouse limitations in mind when drawing up the engineering. One even tried to upsell me on his hardware. DE is a company that puts itself between you and the engineer - which is a good thing I found. They respond quickly all the time with good customer service. The engineer (who I never needed to speak with directly besides the site visit) got my townhouse concerns through them and was able to make an appropriate plan that wasn't too complicated without further word from me. When the city asked for some further calculations, they responded with their timeline promptly and delivered an update. Next time I have need of an engineer, I'll go straight to DE. read more

An update since my initial review. In getting estimates from contractors to complete the retrofit as planned we found out that the plans drawn up by De are not accurate. Specifically, they call for shear wall in a crawl space where there is no cripple wall on which to install plywood. The contractor wouldn't even give us an estimate of the rest of the job because they would not be able to complete the job as designed. Then, when we did find a contractor willing to give us an estimate, they noted that the plans are not in accordance with Chapter A3, which is required if you want to get money back from the CA State voluntary brace and bolt program. Apparently we did not opt for that when we hired DE. On the one hand we bear some of the blame here. On the other, after going through notes of our conversations with DE, and the email chain in the run up to signing the contract, this difference was never explained.  So, one star for responsive customer service and quick report/plan turnaround time. But, in our experience, it seems you have to know what questions to ask and how exactly to ask them, because we didn't know to ask and they did not make clear that there are multiple levels of retrofit. Overall, this experience was not good and I would not recommend DE to anyone else. read more

I write this in October of 2022. I hired Design Everest in April of 2020 for legalizing a garage as living space and the addition of an ADU in the back yard of a rental income home. It has been like climbing Everest without oxygen or a competent guide dealing with them. I am now two and a half years in and $17,000 paid in fees to Design Everest and I do not even have the garage plans done yet. Why? To begin with there have been numerous personnel changes at DE, including the initial architect for both projects. When a new architect eventually joined the project they said the (several times submitted and revised) ADU plans needed to be changed dramatically in order to expedite the permitting process. So, we went back to square one on that all the previous work and time apparently wasted. I have over the years with DE, printed out and submitted several iterations of the garage and ADU plans; that is, DE emails me a file, I upload that to a printing service, pay the cost of printing, wait for the printed plans to arrive, then run them down to the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety and submit them. When the LADBS returns the plans with revisions, Design Everest, being in the SF Bay Area prefers that I scan or photograph the marked up plans and email these to them. I have therefore become the de facto go between here. Despite their marketing claims of operating a vast network of prompt and courteous professionals, Design Everest has no one in my area apparently. Now, when the most recent plans came back from LADBS I requested to mail the whole lot directly to the architect to eliminate potential issues with poor photos or missed important info. This seemed to take them aback. I was told wait while they asked the architect. Some days later I was told, 'just take pictures and send them, that will be fine' So, I did as requested. Some more days later however came the message from DE, 'would you please physically mail the plans to the architect as you had initially requested?' While they acknowledge my likely frustration at this they do not know the half of it. At one point in the process with the garage I was told that I would need a carport in the front of the house which DE could design for an additional fee. Ok let's do it then I figured. I was billed $5,500 which I promptly paid. Shortly after emailing me a file with a carport plan attached, I was told by someone at DE that a carport would not be a necessity in LA county to complete the garage work. I called and asked for a refund or partial refund of the $5,500. I was told that no refund in any amount would be issued to me which strikes me as very unfair. In my experience with DE I continually see: *an abiding lack of professionalism and decent customer service *excruciatingly long turn around time on their part when plans are to be revised. *pitifully slow response to requests for status updates *a lack of interest in acknowledging my expressed concerns I can not count the number of times over the past 30 months that I have stressed to the people of Design Everest that this house sits unrented while I await the set of plans that will grant permits to proceed with my desired construction work. We hired Design Everest for a project to help a client work their way out of a very difficult situation involving a contractor who had done defective work without having gotten building permits. Working with Sayan at Design Everest was an excellent example of optimum performance under stressful conditions, with legal and bureaucratic deadlines complicating every step. I purchased a large carport for 5th wheel and boat cover here in the middle of the Mojave desert. The carport was used, was assembled for two days and red tagged by the city. The owner failed to permit, obtain any plans, etc. I purchased it st a great price. When I started my journey I obtained the Town's requirements. I need structural engineering. I emailed some here on Yelp (which worked great) Design Everest replied quickly. Now, I gave then my graph-paper drawings and lots of photos. Jessica and Ali has the patience of Job. I was in no real hurry yet because no permit was pulled yet. I received plans by email and appear through. I will be pulling permit this week and Jessica guaranteed they are married to this project and will make any corrections required by my Town. Communication was great! Staff was always available by email and telephone. The best part was they were able to take on a difficult case with little information from me and none from the manufacturer. I needed a beam in my house evaluated to determine if it were load bearing and I contacted Design Everest for the job. Because this was an expensive evaluation, I waited to take advantage of Design Everest's 10% discount-Thanksgiving promotion to approve the job. This discount was not immediately credited to me and after numerous phone calls and countless emails to receive it, it's now two months later and I have still not been credited with the 10% off. With each contact I made with them, I was either told the discount was being processed or I was completely ignored. Hannah Lyn, the Customer Service Representative I dealt with at Design Everest, has failed to follow through with my request and is responsible for me having to write this negitive review. My experience with this company far exceeded expectations. From the start, I had a great experience dealing with Brittany who was extremely responsive and put me on a call with one of the principal engineers to answer questions I had. My reasoning for hiring Design Everest was due to my HOA requesting the tile be removed from the balcony and have it reviewed by a structural engineer, and a report submitted. The other part of my great experience was that I had a very short timeline to complete the work and they actually had an engineer come on Labor Day morning to do this. Who does this?! Edward was thorough, informative and he submitted the report the Labor Day the same day. Zaira the project manager expedited sending me the report within a day. Again, this was over Labor Day weekend. This company in my experience, was great to work with and If I need structural engineers again, I wouldn't hesitate to call Design Everest. read more

We were in the middle of a difficult job that required several weeks of planning and at the last minute our structural engineer was unavailable leaving us (on a weekend) just two days from the start date - cancelling would have meant waiting weeks to reschedule and a hefty cancellation fee (not to mention leaving the materials out in the yard). We reached out after seeing the great reviews to Design Everest team on a Saturday morning asking for help and a quick turnaround not sure if it could be done. Not only did they get us a contract and estimate within hours, but later that day we met with an engineer on site who was able to provide guidance and advice that allowed us to proceed with the job with no interruptions. I cant recommend this team highly enough - in this current environment where it is difficult to find licensed structural engineers this group was a lifesaver and we will use them exclusively for future remodel and construction needs.
