I am going to start my review today with a quote from the Hippocratic oath. "I am a doctor and…read morerespect the Hippocratic Oath. I have to treat pain. I must take care of the suffering that comes from pain." Although I am sure that is not an exact quote since I got it off the internet and the oath is in Latin, but I wanted to start with that, so you know that one of your employees failed in this oath. I went into the Sanford Urgent Care (UC). I am a patient at Avera but in times of Urgent Care, I prefer Sanford's UC. I have been suffering from a migraine for about seven days and the pain had finally gotten to be too much for the medicine I have at home to take care of, so I decided to try the Urgent Care. To give you a bit of information I am a 25+ year sufferer and have lived in seven states. In MN, Urgent Cares have the tools necessary to treat migraines hence the reason for the visit. I checked in and at no point did the receptionist or the nurse say they would be unable to help me. If a person comes in with a limb missing and you cannot treat it, you send them to the ER immediately. This sentence will become clearer as we get further along in the story. Vickie comes in and from the moment she walked in there was nothing friendly or nice about her. First thing she asked was "What do the doctors give you when this happens?" I assumed she wanted to know the types of medicines that have worked for me in the past, so I start going down the list of medicines that have worked in the 25+ years of suffering. This is typical of an Urgent Care or ER visit since they do not want to give me a shot or medicine that does not work. But typically, it is whatever that specific doctor prefers, or thinks will work. She says we do not have that "stuff" here. We are just a clinic. Then dead silence. No other offers of what else I could try. Seriously, a glare and dead silence. No compassion. I then say, "I guess I'll go to the ER" She said "I'll show you out". She then literally walks my husband and I out. Opens the door for us. Just so you know, migraine or not, I do not need a door opened for me. Nor has a doctor EVER walked me out or EVER opened a door for me. And my husband can do that for us. It was not some confusing maze where we might get lost in our drug infused stupor. Nor did she help me to the Sanford ER. We had to get in the car and drive to Avera's ER, when Sanford's ER is in the same building. Wouldn't a doctor or PA trying to help a patient direct them to the ER in their building?? So now Ms. Vickie is billing my insurance for her assistance. Because she "saw" me and told me to go to the ER. She did not tell me to go to the ER. I said I would go to the ER during the awkward silence phase of our visit. Nor did she tell me where an ER was or where the ER was that she worked for, which I'm assuming is in the same building. I had to get in my car and drive to Avera's ER. I get it, Doctors' hands are tied with regulations and such and the Urgent Care did not have the means to provide the necessary medicine to provide my pain relief as other Urgent Cares in other cities do. Shame on Sanford I say to this. But what she could have offered was compassion. It is free and easily provided. "We do not have what you might need to sleep off this migraine, so you may have to go to the ER, but have you thought of trying ______?" That is free. OR, when I checked in someone should say they do not treat migraines there. I will never ever, as long as live, forget the way that lady made me feel. No one, in pain seeking relief should EVER have to go through that. If I would have went home and killed myself would that have been enough for Sanford? Because it will happen. The pain is real. And if no one is willing to stand up for those in pain and people are shown the door, what else is left?
