A must visit especially during Christmas time! Old Towne is a beautifully laid museum where you can see how Dane's lived starting the 1800 up til present day! During Christmas time there is a great Christmas market they run and things from baked traditional Danish Christmas cookies/desserts, candies, souvenirs and more! It's a great time for all ages and really loved seeing how people lived as singles and as whole family unit throughout the decades. Children from 0-17yo enter for free too! read more

One of my favorite, most interactive museums I have ever been to! Den Gamle By does such an excellent job at presenting Denmark's history using all of the 5 senses! The layout is as though you are walking through a village throughout different centuries, and the buildings truly pay homage to the decade they are inspired by. The food is also excellent, everything from a bakery to hot dogs. You can even buy soap, books, homemade gifts and other knick-knacks. My absolute favorite section included the living quarters of different individuals from the 1970's. It was really like stepping back into time, and the way the museum was decorated for the holiday season is so traditionally beautiful. My best friend's family brought me here to experience Denmark's history while munching on traditional foods and embracing the holiday festivities. There are also games and activities for the little ones, and the live actors are so kind. There is really something for everybody here, and if you're in Aarhus, do stop by! This outdoor museum is a collection of buildings dating from the 16th century up through the 1970s. In some buildings you will find actors in period dress who will tell you about the buildings and their contents. Most of these buildings were carefully disassembled and reassembled on this site brick-by-brick. Many buildings had multiple uses over the centuries and some, such as the 1950s, 60s, and 70s apartments, were set in early 20th century buildings. Since I grew up in the 60s and 70s, I found those to be quite interesting. I enjoyed seeing the difference between the US and Denmark in those time periods. This was a fun afternoon. read more

History nerds - and people with kiddos - rejoice! This place is fantastic and incredibly unique - an open air history museum / experience that manages to transcend anything I've experienced at any other museum. Your experience here will depend on a) what's open (according to a friend who lives nearby and comes a lot, she sees something different every time, since exhibits sometimes rotate, as do the living history actors) and b) what route you take, considering there isn't one set path through the sprawling "village"-type museum. I think what I loved most was the opportunity for interaction - not just with people (I highly recommend visiting the brew cellar if it's open and chatting with the master brewers...and trying all of the very, very strong beers), but with the exhibits themselves. While there are plenty of traditional "look at this cool stuff in a case / room" exhibits, so many, especially in the 1970s section, allow you to poke around and touch / play with every item in the room. A jazz club! Multiple apartments! A day care! A salon! We spent hours there and I feel like I only saw a small portion of the old town - I'll be back! read more

Old town is a great way to experience the past. Visited here in December, and It was a little cold, and a few things were closed. Overall it's a great outdoor museum. The summer must be amazing here. A great place for families and anyone who enjoys history. read more

This is actually quite a unique museum, in that it is more of small village, or a neighbourhood, with buildings predominantly from the 1600, 1700 and 1800s from around Denmark. Each building has been torn down literally brick by brick, and raft by raft, then transported to Aarhus where they've been meticulously reconstructed in a fitting environment, complete with cobblestone streets. You'll find a hat shop, a bakery, a grocery shop, as well as private houses all on display the way they would have looked back when they were built. The museum also features a more modern 1960s and 1970s neighbourhood, which connects the very old with the modern world outside. If you're in Aarhus, this should be considered a must. read more

I really enjoyed visiting Den Gamle. The one problem was I visited in the middle of March and during the off season some exhibits are closed for maintenance. The Toy Museum was closed and was one of the exhibits I wanted to visit. Nonetheless, Den Gamle is a really fun experience! The actors are terrific! We were invited into one of the homes for coffee and conversation (in English). We declined as we were in sort of a rush, but what a terrific experience it is to be able to talk with them about their daily work and what life is like in their time. There is even a working telephone operator patch board from 1927! During the Summer months, I am sure the museum is very lively and bustling. Worth the trip! read more
