The Apple Store, and many other licensed retailers and repair places wouldn't touch a device that was 6 years old. Alberto at Doctor Clic was the first person who actually opened my computer to confirm that it was not repairable, yet told me that the memory was intact, and that for 49euros, he could transfer the data from my old device to my soon-to-be-purchased new Macbook.

I asked for the memory storage, to serve as an emergency backup, and left the carcass for recycling.
And this should serve as a reminder to make backups to an external hard drive more than once a month... Especially after having downloaded and updating my accounting software... Jeez. I coulda just used my external hard drive... but noooo...
That darned cat. My fault for leaving my laptop plugged in and on the same table as a vase of flowers.
