Past and future…read more The National Library of Norway was opened in 2005, exactly 100 hundred years after Norway's liberation from Sweden. The library is presently under some external restoration work that will be completed soon. The purpose of this wonderful library is to keep, preserve and categorize everything Norwegian. To make it even more ambitious, they are attempting to digitalize the entire collection. Probably won't complete everything but much of it will eventually be done. The inside is stunning, lovely and amazing. Huge murals, sculptures and other pieces art are scattered around, and beautiful, massive and old card catalogs are in various spots around library. Of course since they are preserving the Norwegian culture, most of the material is in Norwegian. But that didn't matter to us because it is such a grand, elegant and wonderful building. The motto on the library is, "To Preserve the Past for the Future". And they are doing a great job of keeping the past alive for future generations.

BTW I didn't make that up. However, if I was talking about an opera or a ballet inside the building, I'd be writing pretentious things like how the acoustics failed to do Justice to the pizzicato in Edvard Grieg's music or how the prima ballerina wasn't on point in "Swan Lake". Instead, I added a listing for the magnificent building itself because it makes such an architectural statement in gleaming white at the head of Oslofjord. The roof was built from an incline that starts at ground level. The design created a large plaza that allows tourists like you and me to walk up and enjoy panoramic views of the city from the front edge of the opera house. The walking surface was quite striking as it was built with a combination of white granite and white Italian carrara marble. That means you don't have to be an erudite classical music lover to critique this opera house. You can just be a regular Joe who listens to Kelly Clarkson on your Air Pods and still enjoy walking on this gorgeous roof. RELATED - Exploring Norway?
