It is easy to forget that Chester-le-Street, now just a small town with an international cricket…read morestadium, has an extensive and fascinating history. Some of this, stretching back to Roman times, is recorded in the tiny Anker House Museum attached to the side of St. Mary's and St. Cuthbert's Church. The church itself is worth a visit, as a beautiful and well kept old building, if that is your thing. Guided tours are available in the middle of the day but are not compulsory, if you just want to look around. The museum has won awards as best small musuem in the area, but is not very well funded or known. It always needs the support of a few more visitors.
