I had a horrible experience trying to take Microbiology. The lab aspect was a complete nightmare…read morebecause the lab company UCSD works with is incredibly disorganized. I'm currently taking a Chemistry course. This week, I spent one hour learning chemistry on Canvas, and five hours trying to get my textbook and homework platform to link with Canvas. Canvas provides no instructions whatsoever. The professor just tells you to contact the textbook company. The textbook website says to click on a link on Canvas. Unfortunately that link in Canvas takes you to a blank page. Other students are having problems too. This is my second horrible experience with UCSD Extension. If you want to learn science, find another place to take your classes. If you want to spend hours trying to resolve technical problems, this is a great option. I wish UCSD Ext would not outsource.

I took Microbiology with Lab 169818 at UC San Diego and it was the most disorganized experience…read more Lessons are everywhere. Not organized at all. Mixed up and repeated information the learning sections. The videos provided for learning are not the teacher speaking and are random people/"professors" but some of them can't even pronounce the words and sound like they have NO CLUE what they are talking about. It's quite confusing what you really need to know for the class because the modules say one thing but the PowerPoints, reading, and videos talk about that plus way more. It's very much so an overload. It's like no one took the time to perfect or even proofread this class setup and modules. Science lab kit is way overpriced for what you get. Like really for $450 you couldn't add 2 paper clips, alcohol, extra masks, more candles, extra Petri dishes with agar, and extra microbes (for any errors). We are not experts here and being left alone to do the labs especially at the beginning is trial and error. For me I accidentally punctured the agar with the loop and ruined my whole sample and it was just shit out of luck unless I wanted to buy more myself (only about $10 but I just paid $450 for this kit so why should I have to do that?). Not everything in the kit was used. It was a huge waste of money. The class is kind of "at your own pace" so you could totally finish early and wing it! I guess if you have the money and don't really want to learn but just need the class- go for it. I would never recommend this class or school to anyone. It was a terrible experience and this is coming from someone who already has a degree and has taken MANY online classes.

I've come back after many years to leave this review. For context, I was briefly a student here…read moreback in 2009. You'll understand in a moment why I waited so long to write this. I took SAT tutoring here, back when the SAT had three sections and was scored out of 2400. I ended up with a 2040 -- which at the time was the ~94th percentile. I scored a 730 on the Writing section, which was the ~99th percentile for men back then. So why the bad review? I ended up dropping out and self-studying halfway through because I was treated in an extremely condescending and arrogant way by Vincent Perry. At first, I had a wonderful tutor who handled my English and Writing sections -- she was kind, patient, and professional. When she left, I was told I was "lucky" to be upgraded to a "master tutor," Vincent, at no extra charge. For context, they were charging $50 an hour at the time but paying tutors only $15 an hour. I know this because several UCSD students I knew worked there and confirmed it. Vincent started an argument with me during our very first essay review after I used the phrase "due to." He claimed it was grammatically incorrect because it supposedly referred to being "due" like a deadline rather than "as a result of." When I politely disagreed, he told me I was being argumentative. I can assure you, I was polite and articulate -- he simply didn't like being challenged. So I dropped out and finished my prep on my own. About a year later, when I was in college, I applied for a position there. Vincent sent me an unprofessional rant accusing me of being a terrible student with poor work ethic -- completely out of nowhere, and long after I'd left. Without his help, I still achieved an excellent SAT score and couldn't justify asking my parents to keep paying for those lessons. I went on to graduate from UCSB, a Tier 1 research university, taught math and computer science for six years, and later worked at Microsoft and several tech startups as a senior sales executive. I can't attribute even a fraction of that success to this place. From what I remember, the lessons mostly consisted of buying a review book, being assigned problems, and then going over those problems in class. You can buy the same books yourself for under $100 and save the trouble of being mistreated. Even though this happened many years ago, I doubt much has changed. Remember that students don't forget experiences like this -- treat them with respect and listen to them. Your students are your customers.

If you are curious at all about Toastmasters, or you know that you want or need help with public speaking, or that you need help overcoming the fear of public speaking, then do yourself a favor and try it out at least once. What do you have to lose by trying it for 1 hour? Absolutely nothing and you will be doing yourself a favor, and at the very least you will meet some wonderful new people. Meetings are held Thursdays at noon in the new Vistage office in the UTC mall area across from the mall on Eastgate. There is plenty of parking in front of Vistage. Just make sure to sign in at the front desk and find out which meeting room is the current room for that meeting because it is not always in the same room. I was drawn in by an invite from Brian to attend the pizza party to learn more about Toastmasters and it was much more than good pizza. I have since attended only 4 or 5 meetings, but I enjoyed every minute of it. It is a very non-threatening environment and you can choose to jump right in and participate 100% or you can sit back and observe and not speak at all. Whatever your personal comfort level is. The first time I just watched. There are a wide range of people in the group from all backgrounds, educations, jobs, and speaking expertise levels. Everyone is invited to join and you will feel welcomed and at ease right away. Brian, Jaimee, Brandon, Dawn and all the others do a fantastic job and will help you every step of the way. The meetings are run very precisely like a fine tuned machine. After the meeting sign in period, there is a brief introduction, the meeting agenda is discussed, and responsibilities are handed out. There are a range of responsibilities like a person who keeps track of the time so people don't go over their allotted time limit, there is an "um" counter, etc. There is a meeting agenda and there are usually people who are scheduled to give a timed planned speech but time permitting there are other little fun speaking exercise games. Sometimes there are guest speakers from other clubs, etc. I want to reiterate that you can just sit and observe the meeting until you are comfortable with immersing yourself fully in the Toastmasters experience. You don't have to talk if you don't want to. It may be enough for you at first to just observe, and there are no judgments or expectations, but if you do choose to participate it will be a great learning experience. If you do work up to being 1 of the planned speech givers, you will quickly get dynamic and meaningful feedback in a helpful way which should help you hone your public speaking skills.

After I give a speech I know I'm going to be told what I did well and how I can grow and I greatly appreciated the high quality of feedback. Hearing that immediate feedback helps me grow and better prepare for my next speech. I particularly appreciate the diversity of styles and experiences people bring. I find myself adopting new techniques that I don't think I would have learned had I not been a member of UTC Toastmasters. It's not simply getting better at speaking, it's learning a particular set of skills: vocal variety, pausing, projecting and really connecting with your audience. That's the type of experience you can have at a great club like UTC Toastmasters.

The entire campus is flat, super easy to walk, and feels very safe. The buildings look new and are incredibly clean -- I mean really clean! Their athletic programs are top-notch. We spent the whole afternoon with the team and coaches, and everyone was welcoming and professional. And get this -- tuition for the first year is only $9,300, and the following year is ZERO dollars! Say whaaaat?! Huge thank you to the coach for taking the time to meet with us and even treating us to lunch. Overall, Mesa College really stood out -- great people, great campus, and great opportunities!

Mesa is the worst. just in general. I was gonna take a class…read morefor the first semester but I couldn't because mesa was not accepting the form my high-school was sending them. my highschool sent one FOUR TIMES for saying its ok for me to attend Mesa to get extra credits and this went on for a MONTH while it keeps saying my high school needs to send a form and my school keeps saying they did and keeps showing me they are sending the form so i know it was not my high-school fault and everytime I tried calling the school no one picked up for THREE HOURS, if they did even pick up, a lady picks up and always send me to someone else because she dont want to be helping me and do her JOB, then am back on hold for at least another HOUR till someone picks up and then hangs up. I know its not a glitch in the system because I can HEAR someone Breathing or someone talking in the background. this made me not be able to get into a class because no one accepted the form on MESAS SIDE. the same thing happened when I tried getting in on the second semester but this time I went into the school because I was not gonna deal with the phone crap trying to get a hold of someone. so I made my STEP FATHER take off work for the day to go talk to the student services, the front desk people are polite and I told them what happen with the phone stuff thwy apologize and said they will talk with the staff about it, they DIDNT... because I tried calling for a question about the website for Mesa. then after awhile I got into the class I wanted, first day, I came early to find the class and it was a SUB because the real teacher couldn't come in because he broke his hand, the sub wrote down everything we needed to do till we see eachother the next meeting day also which the teacher did NOT ADD ANY WEBSIGHT TO FIND CANVAS on the board on thw first day so i had to CALL THE SCHOOL AGAIN, WAITED A HOUR and had to give my information to another lady becauseonce again the firsr lady never does ANYTHING and had to get a email to my professor to get everything done. when I came in the next time I came early once more, also had everything DONE because I had to take a bus. I got onto canvas on my laptop because i haven't login to it on my laptop because i did my work on my home computer. once I am in canvas it said I am not ENROLLED IN ANY CLASSES so I went BACK to student services ask a man whats going on and showed my id, he said I got KICKED OUT BY THE PROFESSOR and said NO REASON ON THE COMPUTER...I was PISSED because I did the work and was not late and came to school...so I waited for ANOTHER SUB and she didnt know what happened or why the teacher KICKED ME...so I left that class even tho the sub said I can stay, I didnt want to stay because all this work for me just to get kicked OUT???. so I wrote the sub why did he kicked me out and I had to wait a few hours for him to reply, which with him I find reasonable because he got a broken hand and once I got the response he said I was not there on the first day...which I WAS because if I wasn't there on the first day how did I send him a picture of HIS white board of what the sub put on the first day sent to him because when asking for the canvas link I send the picture along with it, so I basically GAVE UP and left this school and NEVER COMING BACK to Mesa to deal with all this drama. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL.
