I spent 9 hours waiting in 58 degree house temperature for furnace repair. So much for the "Plan" giving me priority service. I was told I would be the next customer and 3 hours later that there had been a delay. I was later told that other plan customers already had scheduled appts. - had I know that, I would have looked elsewhere. There was no indication prior to the work as to what the costs might be, but once a new filter was installed (the cause of the problem was an incorrectly installed furnace filter that had been installed by Dean's!), they wanted $385. The amount was reduced after I made multiple calls, but really? I should pay because they didn't do the job correctly the first time? I had great outcomes with prior service from Dean's, but the combination of this experience and the number of times I had to call back for information and customer support makes me want to find another provider in the future. read more

Joke of a service. Completely unprofessional with customer care. Refuse to come back out to finish a job we have already paid for unless we pay extra even though we are deans members! Told to do it ourselves . What a crap membership . Would NEVER work with them again. Will HIGHLY recommend to others to never work with Deans either. Their employees bash the guys who are master craftsman, plumbers, electricians , etc who own their own business. Talking how superior Deans is and others driving up in " rusty old vans" might do a decent job but not as good as Deans. Complete rubbish. Called and scheduled appt online for what I thought was 10am to noon, but got a call at 730 am saying a tech was ready-could they come now. i was sleeping. Called them back and I was home anyway so I didnt mind waiting. My AC went out and the tech was very nice and quickly discovered that another company who 2 days ago looked at my furnace left a blower door open, I think, making the AC not work. It was an easy fix. Nothing was actually broke. The tech, Ray, was very nice, professional, courteous and all the rest. He didnt try and hard sell but did give me a ballpark price for new furnace and air when I asked for one. He also took the time to test my freon and helped spray down the AC unit to get the cottonwood off of it. Very cool, I thought. Average scheduling experience but wanted to take the time to recognize a very professional tech, Ray. He represents this company well. I didnt love the $99 travel fee but he didnt hit me with diagnostics and then pile on from there so I guess it wasn't horrible. And I couldn't use the $59 online coupon towards that, so, didn't love that either. All in all, good experience with Dean's and this employee. read more

I called and scheduled an appointment 48 hours in advance and had my husband take off work only to have the company call me 3 hours after my window time of 8am-12p to inform me that they will no longer be able to meet my appointment today due to another customer offering more work to the tech. We had to call a plumber on Nov 23rd because our hot water pressure was not working correctly. My husband the day before replaced a valve and he thought he had done something wrong. He had already spent a few hours and 3 trips to Home Depot the day before. Several other plumbers were booked on the 23rd, so I made an appointment with Deans. They said the plumber would assess the issue and then give a price. The plumber told my husband he didn't do anything wrong, but that the faucet was shot. Thankfully my husband had picked one up at Home Depot, just in case. The plumber gave my husband a price of $539!! Since we didn't have many options, being that it was the day before Thanksgiving, we agreed. It took him 1/2 hour to replace the faucet. Seriously! $539 for 1/2 an hour!! Unbelievable! Wanted almost $800 to install a 1/2 horse power garbage disposal. Unit cost $100 and it's about a 30 minute job. I sent the guy home packing after waiting all morning for him. I asked for a price from the person who I scheduled the service call with and they refused to give me any pricing. I was pretty upset when the guy quoted me almost $800 as he was standing in my kitchen. I laughed and told him no way and told him to leave. He then asked for a $59 service call fee and I promptly showed him to the door without taking out my wallet. What a rip off this place is. Beyond ridiculous prices. read more

We had them out to look at our furnace that wasn't working, and were told it likely needed to be replaced, estimate was over $8000. Well, w need a working furnace, so we put a deposit down and picked a date. We had a 2nd company come in about 2 hours after that for a 2nd opinion. The 2nd company said it looked to be working well, but the heat exchanger needed to be replaced, and was likely covered under warranty. We called up Dean's to cancel less than 3 hours after their tech left, but were charged a 10% "restocking fee" on all proposed work. Wanted a simple water softener replacement hooked up. The old Commers water system died so I wanted to have a new store bought Morton system installed. According to Morton & merchant's website & reviews the water softener that I had purchased was easy to install. Several reviews all saying the same about the ease of installation. The receptionist would not provide any quotes, even a range, over the phone. Why, because they are way to overpriced! For what should have been an hour & half to the maximum of two hours - I was quoted an installation price of $749. I ended up paying a $49 consultation charge to the plumber whom drove 20 plus miles just because the receptionist would not simply provide a quote... I originally scheduled a consultation for $50 which I saw as a deal online. The guy came and did his diagnosis and stated either I fix my furnace or I can purchase a new one for $500 more. I said I would need to do some homework with pricing and he gave me a bill for $320.00. The lady on the phone said it was $50 and he said it's common knowledge that I should know it would cost more than that. I said I would only pay $50 and then he insulted me for not wanting to immediately buy a furnace. He packed up, apologized 10 minutes later and proceeded to try to sell me again, as if I would be dumb enough to not shop prices and also buy from someone who just insulted me. Watch out for the hidden cost increase. The rep even admitted that they talk about people complaining about the hidden cost in meetings and they continue to be told to do it. Keep them honest. I will never call Deans Electric again. I was told that they would be out in the morning. Got a call about 10AM to inform me that the electrician actually would not be there until the afternoon. When asked for a time I was told between 12-4PM. Showed up around one. Showed the electrician which outlets were not working and was told that it would be $184. I was told that there would be no charge until the problem was known. When I said that I was not going to do that and he could leave he told me there would still be a travel charge. Overpriced - When shopping around for a new water heater, I included Deans in my list as they are a local business. They wanted $80 to give me an estimate which I balked at since none of their competition had charged for the estimate. So they agreed to perform the estimate at no charge. Dean's estimate was $300 (~10%) more than another company for the exact same brand and model water heater. I told the estimator no thanks and sent him in his way. Less than an hour later I received a call from the office with an offer to match the competitive price and even extend the manufacturer warranty by a year. I said no thank you and chose the non price gouging company instead. Unlikely that I will ever call them again. read more

The day of the service window, an hour and a half after the window had begun, we got a call saying they weren't coming. I have used Deans several times in the past with no issues but this time was very different! I wonder if there have been some changes in Management? I called on Saturday for repair of a broken pipe. I was told they would send someone out that day and would call me back with a time. About 3 hours later I was called and told no one could come out until Monday. An appointment was set up by them for Monday between 10 - 2. I arranged my day to be home for the repair person to arrive. About 1:00 after waiting for 3 hours I was called and told they had to cancel the appointment and would come out on Wednesday "first thing" I received 1 phone call about 10AM saying a tech was on his way, then I received another call about an hour later saying a Tech was on his way this time. Finally about 1:30 a tech arrived and began the repair. I was quoted $400 - $500 for the repair plus a $50 travel fee. After all the runaround of just trying to get an appointment and having to arrange my work schedule this was not worth the effort. I will not use Dean's again! Ever!!! read more

I had sewage backup into my basement, with like actual turds floating on the floor. I called Dean's "emergency services" only to find out that they didn't have anyone that could come out and do emergency services. The best they could do was have someone come out the next morning to possibly take a look at it. Why even have the emergency services if you don't have any employees able to do this task? I discovered my little problem at 4:30 in the afternoon, so it's not as if it was after hours or anything. The lady I spoke to on the phone was rude, short, and seemed utterly clueless. I should have read reviews on Yelp before calling Dean's. At my town home we had an issue with getting hot water in one of the bathroom and I called Dean's for repair. Technician told me over the phone he needs to replace the the catridge and explained to me it as a complicated job and may take couple of hours. He then provided me an estimate of $565 excluding travel charges $49. Since he told me it's couple of hours job and I asked the technician to complete the job. To my surprise I received the invoice within 30 min and realized that he finished his job in 30 min. I feel I was robbed. Technician overly exaggerated the work and charged me ridiculous price. My initial experience has been frustration. I called Dean's when I had an issue with my boiler heat on a porch. When I called they said that they would be able to come out in 2 days. The temperatures had been cooling off and without heat, on the porch, I was concerned about the pipes freezing. However, with space heaters, we were able to keep the temp on the porch well above freezing. The morning of the appointment they called and told me that the technician was sick and that no one would be able to come out until the following Monday. During this time the temperatures dipped close to 0 and we were unable to keep the porch warm. The technician Dan, who was quite friendly and knowledgeable showed up past the appointment window. After an hour or so spent diagnosing the problem, he discovered that I now had frozen pipes that had cracked in not one but THREE places. All of the radiators would need to be replaced to the tune of $1800+ dollars..... I can only imagine that if they had been able to come out when they said they would have that this could have been avoided. read more

I recently had some plumbing work done at my home on a Saturday. Nate was very friendly and professional. Later in the day, I was returning some of the things that I had moved to make room for the repair and noticed some water on the floor. I discovered a pin hole leak at one of the connections of a new valve that was installed. I called Dean's about the leak and asked to have someone to come out and repair this. The person was very sympathetic, however, because it was past they're regular hours, they wanted to charge me $169 for an emergency call after I had just spent over $800. She also said that the technician would not be available until Monday afternoon. This is not what I would call good customer service if you're not willing to fix a problem that was created by them. I had no choice but to schedule the repair for Monday while in the meantime I had to put a bucket underneath the leak. read more

I would have given zero stars but that wasn't an option. During the sub zero temperatures we were having trouble with our furnace not lighting or heating but the fan was running non stop. I went to Dean's web site and filled out the appointment set up submission. I was called promptly and set up an appointment for someone to come out the next morning. The technician showed up as promised and after checking the furnace, informed me that the gas valve was on 'hard lock' and we would need to buy a new furnace for $4,000. We burn wood so we did not have to make a snap decision. I called another company that also sent someone out promptly. He checked my furnace, hit the reset button and my furnace was working again. He suggested we get a more modern thermostat so we could use the fan from the furnace when we are using our wood furnace to prevent the overheating. He said we did not need a new furnace but when we do they sell them for considerably less. When my husband called Deans about the misinformation they claimed the technician, or should I say furnace salesman, told us that if we didn't replace the furnace it would keep happening, not the case anyway. That was clearly not the case as he never hit the reset button or even mentioned it and left me with a non working furnace. I paid $119 for 'travel time', which was all of 10 miles and a scam. I would NOT recommend this company. I'm glad we were not desperate for heat or we would have probably bought their line of crap. read more

Deans professional came to my girlfriends house for a free water inspection. She is foreign and a single mother, and doesn't know about costs for these services. The technician talked her into getting a water softener that she didn't need, and charged almost $2000 for a water softener that could have been bought for around $400. They only hooked up the softener, it took 30 minutes or less. Then they charged her over $400 to replace a tub stopper in her bathtub that took 10 minutes to switch. When I called and finally was able to speak with a manager, he disputed every charge saying that I don't know what it takes to run a business and all of these charges were justified. I will be sharing this story with as many online outlets as possible so others don't get ripped off like she did. read more

I am so frustrated with this company. Sent a technician out right away to fix our hot water heater.. technician replaced the thermo couple and that did not do the trick- he then called the water heater company and found out conveniently that the parts were under warranty.. the company sent us new parts at no charge but Dean's was going to charge $890 to install the new parts. I had to put half down.. but said I wasn't totally sure if I was going to have them replace the parts, or if we would have someone cheaper do it.. since you can buy a brand new one for that price. I called and spoke to the manager Troy, asking for some kind of refund because number 1 they did not fix our water heater and number 2 the parts were under warranty to begin with. Now it was $345 just to replace the thermo coupler- took him about 20 minutes.. he hesitantly agreed to credit me $45 plus the $82.50 which I had over paid because we did not have them replace all of the parts. Troy said he was getting the check out the next day.. here I am almost 3 weeks later and no check. They keep telling me the check was sent, but I have not received it. Terrible customer service in my eyes, and the biggest scam if I ever saw one. Would never recommend these guys.. Talk about getting raked over the coals for nothing!! I was out of the country and the water heater at a rental of mine went out. I called Dean's and they had time to replace it later that Friday morning. But they would not give me a price over the phone. So I made the mistake of telling them just to replace it. They billed me $3,643.49 for a basic hot water heater replacement. When I called to complain about how much they charged me they said that was a fair price for 5 hours of work. When you subtract the price of the water heater and the couple of fitting that they used from the price. It puts there hourly rate well over $400.00 per hour. They also wanted to replace my perfectly good water softener And put stickers all over my furnace, air exchanger, ductwork, and water heater. I will never let them in my house again. read more

Charged $49 to come out to provided an estimate which they offered to apply to the bill if I accepted the $380 estimate. When I asked them "how long would they guarantee the work" I was told 30 days. I paid the $49 and went on YouTube. Was able to fix the problem with $48 of Shark Bite connector from Home Depot. Saved $283. Would have saved $332 had I went to YouTube first. read more

Want to pay a ton for nothing then call Dean's. I called them and they seemed fair and friendly but did not give a quote over the phone for the services I requested. The services that I inquired about was to install a dishwasher, a shut off-valve for an ice maker, and tape a dryer vent (which fell apart soon after they left). Dean's came out and looked at what I needed done and gave me a quote (which I accepted as the going rate for the Twin Cities) and I told them to perform the tasks. They completed the service except for the dishwasher where the tech forgot to put the lower cover plate on (I told the tech I could perform this task). I will admit they told me the price up front but I took their word in good faith as the going rate for the area. The grand total... $1100... After their service I called around only to find out that many other companies were much cheaper (by far!!!!!!!!!!). I called back to ask why they charged so much compared to their competition and the managers excuses were we have too much overhead because of advertising and we hire professionals. During our conversation I also mentioned that if I am paying TOP dollar they should complete everything and he agreed (but they failed to complete the $600 dishwasher install in which we supplied the dishwasher). I had signed up for the Dean's program where they come out and check your appliance yearly (cost $99 to save 10% on the service) but during my call to the manager I asked for that as a refund as well as the $49 travel charge. I will never call for their service again and would suggest that you don't either. It only took them 2.5 hours to perform the task I requested ($440 an hour). I was stupid and did not call around but I know there has to be more legitimate businesses around than Dean's. Sorry for the rant but they also gave me a quote for a water heater install of $2600, which included the water heater, because they said ours was a little old. If good customer care AFTER the sale is important to you, I recommend going elsewhere. I bought a new furnace from Dean's on 11/6/2012 with a 5 year warranty. On 11/18/2017, the furnace fails just 12 days after the warranty expired. I called Dean's and they told me there was nothing they could do for me and I would have to pay the full charge. Technically, I have no legs to stand on. But when I look at their web site's "About Us" page that heralds their "family owned" roots and "guaranteed customer satisfaction", I find their cold response to my 12 days out of warranty situation to be woefully inadequate if they truly believe in their family owned/guaranteed customer satisfaction values. No consideration for my situation, no offer to split the cost, nothing...just a cold "you're out of luck" that it failed just 12 days after the warranty officially ended. Since this happened on a weekend, I was hopeful that maybe this was just the weekend crew giving the textbook answer. So I called them again on Monday and I was assured by the representative that the customer "form" had been filled out that detailed my situation and I would receive a phone call within "24 to 48 hours" from the manager "Jeremy." This was my second attempt trying to get a hold of the manager Jeremy. And for the second time in a row, no response. Just crickets chirping. I don't feel valued as a customer. I feel cheated by the $900 repair bill. Why do I feel cheated? Because 1) it was just 12 days out of warranty and 2) I was charged $747.62 (on top of the $149 emergency travel charge) for the gas valve (VR8215S1214 Honeywell) that I later found on Amazon for about $93. I understand a company has overhead costs to pay for, but $654/hr to install a gas valve (it only took an hour to install)?? An hourly charge like that would even make the Federal Gov't blush. Prior to this experience, I was considering Dean's for replacing my almost 20 year old furnace at my other residence - but not anymore. After being treated this way, I was not shocked to see the numerous one and two star Google reviews and 2 out of 5 star rating on Yelp. Another reviewer said they have a "C" rating on Angie's List. For anyone considering Dean's, think long and hard about those negative reviews before doing business with them. You might tell yourself - sure, every business has some bad reviews. But look at the quantity of bad reviews and actually read some of the nightmare stories...it's the smart homework that I should've done and I'm writing this review to offer fair warning to you. I bought a furnace that failed after just five years and since I was TWELVE days out of warranty, I was left out in the cold by Dean's. And Dean's, unless you have something to say in response to this review other than your canned response (i.e. "Please do not hesitate to reach out to our office, we would like to further discuss your service experience and repair bill.") that I saw in response to so many of the complaints from others on Google, don't even bother. The Technician came to my house, and was very condescending. Tried to charge us $1700.00 for a toilet job that I had done myself in the past, but wasn't able to do at the time, (I was in crutches after hip surgery). I asked him if he would just do the specific work I was wanting done, but he said he couldn't because the company has a pricing package. I sent him on his way, and called a different plumber the next day, who was at least honest enough to explain to me that the leak wasn't even coming from the toilet. It was coming from the fridge. Just called Dean's Plumbing after seeing their ad on the internet stating they had drain cleaning for $99.00 plus a $49.00 travel charge. This appeared to be fine. I made an appointment and they came in a reasonable time. However, when they came I was told the cleaning of the drain would be $375.00. I told the very pleasant gentleman I would pay him the $49.00 but would not pay the additional cost and call someone else. I usually do not write reviews, but I think this one is necessary. I learned some lessons and want to share with my neighbors. Dean's Plumbing: the prices are too high and techs try to scam you. Tip: Never call them when you have an emergency. I had a leak few months back near the Water meter. The fix was to put a 6 inches pipe with coupling. The tech quoted me $600 plus for this minor repair. As the leak was just after water meter so I was practically out of water. Any ways, I agreed and got the pricey job done. I had a slightly bigger pipe repair an year ago for $300 from same guys. So, they charge you based upon your situation not actual work. I will never use these guys again. OK, let's come to scam. My two year old furnace started blowing cold air. Called these guys. They checked the furnace and told me I have cracked it. The fixing will be expensive and they recommended to install a new furnace for $5600.00. I refused to take it and let them to go. Called one of my closest friends who is pretty handy guy. He came and looked at the furnace. He told me that these machines run for 15 plus years. How a furnace could crack which was installed just two years ago. He removed a part from furnace called Flame Sensor. It was dirty. He cleaned it up and put back in. Kicked back the furnace and it started blowing hot air. It is working fine since then. I had furnace tune up from Center Point Energy last week and the tech told me that furnace is working in perfect condition. No cracks, no malfunction. A Dean's plumber came out to look at a few plumbing jobs for us including clearing the main sewer lilne up to 100' from clean out and an additional line from the basement washtub to the trap (less than 25'). The quote was for $649. I thought that was really high so I called the company (Halvorsen Sewer Company) that we had previously used (which I had initially forgotten about). They came out and did the same job with a warranty for $208! read more

Jason B worked up a sweat, tearing a pile of roots out of our main drain. He was a good communicator and good-natured too, taking all of my four-year-old son's heckling with a smile. The snake got stuck on each pass; and he really had to muscle it out with vice grips and a lot of solid tugging and pushing. He took the time and got the job done for us. That said, I have a few reservations. We paid another company much less to do the same work a few years ago. I couldn't get a quote over the phone, just that I would pay for a service visit and be given options. In retrospect, I don't see any reason why the appointment-setter couldn't have told me the options and cost of the options over the phone. They have set rates for their services. Some options are non-options, as they are cost-prohibitive. I have nothing against the technician who did the work for us. But I could have had the work done by a licensed plumber for half the price. Of course, everything was set up to keep me in the dark about the cost until it was too late to reasonably back out. I couldn't recommend Dean's because of the pricing and the whole practice of shrouding the cost in mystery until the technician is on the premises and owed a trip visit charge. read more

I had my sump pump replaced on a Sunday early evening because my basement flooded because of failed sump pump I had Dean's put in 3 years ago so I called them again. Adam charged me $1500.00 to drop a new one in. That is crazy expensive!! Well to say it failed a less than a year later and I had Gadke's plumbing put one in for $400.00 on a Sunday night.. Girls don't use these guys- way too expensive and not trustworthy. Stay away- I cannot say enough. By the way Adam took my failed sump pump with him in which I needed for my homeowner ins.
