Many clothes were damaged, and the tag did not mention the damaged item. I understand that items are vintage, but it should be disclosed of the condition of the clothing. The v store was very hot and packed with people. I was unable to look at everything because shoppers kept bumping into me or cutting me off unfortunately. The clothes were not very organized either. It was hard to look through them. If they did crowd control and limit the shoppers inside, I may have had a better experience. This has been the most disappointing shop during my Scotland holiday so far.

When you walk in, you clearly get the vibe that this is a university student's frequent haunt. As we shopped here, students came in and out, receive a discount, and generally have their needs met with the types of clothing available. However, the selection of clothes in the store isn't so student oriented that a wider audience won't be able to find something of interest. The first floor is more women's oriented, with tartan featuring prominently. The second floor is men's, which had some decent selections of Fred Perrys and the like. When we were there, the store was staffed just by a couple girls on the first floor, and they were pretty deep in conversation with each other. Didn't bother us at all, but perhaps don't expect to have staff catering to your every need here. But if you just like to do your thing and browse through the racks, you should be well sorted.,

I understand this is a risk with 2nd hand clothing, and places don't accept returns etc, but I do draw the line at paying ~£30 for something I literally can't wear. I messaged their instagram page about it and expressed my disappointment that they weren't willing to reconcile this in any way (I said I felt this was poor customer service) and the message I received back was so cheeky I am honestly in disbelief. It's such a shame for a small village to have hardly any facilities available to passing trade our group was glad to see this place, that has one side that is used as an antique shop and the other for a tea room. The cafe has not got a hot food licence so can only offer sandwiches and a bowl of soup if you are lucky, we where at least able to get a good cup of tea and something to eat to recharge our batteries. My friend had a sandwich with the only choice available being cheese and tomato, but there is a good selection of home baking on display. The lady that served us was nice and chatty, that made our visit a pleasant experience.

Not only did the owners stay open a little later for us they also allowed us to bring in our wee dog and we were then treated to an assortment of homemade soup, freshly baked cakes and teas and coffees all at a very reasonable price. The two ladies running the shop are just lovely - really friendly and chatty added to the whole experience and you are surrounded by beautiful, ornate vintage homeware and oddities. It's like a step back in time this little gem of a place where your tea is served in beautiful china tea cups and saucers in a homely enviroment. Definitely worth stopping in if you are passing through / in the area.

And as I entered the charity shop I could see that there selection of items was quite limited. The shop is not large and this obviously impacts upon the amount of stock they can put on the shop floor. Not a lot of the goods caught my eye, apart from some old board games I used to play and some old books that were on offer. I didn't buy anything but I did put some money in the charity tub. The main problem that charity shops have in towns like this, is that they can only get a limited amount of stock, and unlike in the city, these shops are stuck in an age where only families and elderly people tended to visit them. It's a shame and hopeful this shop will soon modernise itself and raise money for a good cause!

One if the best ranges of authentic 50's dresses I have found to date, gorgeous fabrics and properly constructed. These beauties are priced under the £200 mark. On closer inspection, it all seemed a little over-priced. I've seen similar pieces at vintage fairs for a fraction of the price. There was a light peach camisole cropped throw-over for £35, which I'd honestly seen in Barnardos recently, only in a slightly more pink colour, for just £5. Vintage, is understandably, a pricey business because there's a lot of special things to be found and I don't mind paying that bit more for a vintage dress or a really special piece of clothing. But when it comes to second-hand sweaters and cardigans, they really shouldn't amount to Topshop prices. I can get similar items at vintage fairs and charity shops for far, far better prices. That's not to say Those Were The Days wouldn't be great for a special occasion but this time round, we just wanted a quick browse and found even the cheaper, more basic items to be overpriced. I like my vintage shop music to be vintage too! So a bit of 1920's jazz or swing would have made for a better atmosphere over the Coldplay thay had playing. Regardless, we were given a friendly welcome and I'm sure it's somewhere I'd give another chance if in that part of town and looking for something special.

Especially if you want to see the volcanic plug under the castle. The best views of it are from here. It's also where you can make your way up the Vennel Steps to see the old defensive walls of the city. There are even two or three different ways that you can get to the castle from here. The Granny Green Steps are located on the west side of the square. It will take you up to Johnston Terrace where you can take another set of stairs called Castle Wynd North up to the castle. The second option is to take the Castle Wynd South path in the middle of the square which will lead into the Patrick Geddes Steps and directly to the North Steps. Another way is to walk up West Bow from the square to Victoria Street (also in Grassmarket). Take the stairway up to Victoria Terrace and then make your way up to the steps at Castle Wynd North or to the Royal Mile. You'll get a different perspective of the Grassmarket area and the castle from all angles. We visited it daily. We even passed through it on our way to Greyfriars Kirkyard via Candlemaker Row. The National Museum of Scotland is also easily accessible from here. The square in Grassmarket is the perfect meet up location. There's a lot of dark history here as well. It was one of the public execution sites that included the unsuccessful one of "Half-Hangit Maggie Dickson" in 1724. There's a bar at the square named after her. You'll also see a memorial written on the stones of the square for the last person (James Andrews) to be hanged at the gallows there on 4 February 1784. All creepiness aside, it's a very lively and active place that you'll pass through at some point. I mean, how could you not? The window display looked great and the shop had a trendy vintage feel about, similar to the chic charity shops you'd find on Glasgow's Byres Road. Each time I walked past, I felt like the shop was teasing me with all it's second-hand vintage goodies. I could look but I couldn't touch... ....Until the shop opened and I could finally fulfill my thrifty desire. Wow, wow, wow! The place is huge and filled with lovely things. Velvet pencil skirt. Fringed flapper mini. Green safari jacket. Everything was lovely and beautiful and so many pieces caught my eye. Impressive considering the shop had only just opened! With more than a handful of garments, I popped to the changing room. The changing room is GIANT! - More like a dressing room with a little chair and quirky decorations. With such roomy changing facilities, you might as well make the most of them! Dance, skip, jump. Give yourself a personal fashion show! Why not?! You've certainly got the spacial capacity and you'll be looking dapper in your new clothes! Seriously though, you will not be struggling for space in there. Staff were really very friendly. The manager of the Byres Road CHAS was in for the afternoon and insisted on holding the changing room curtain closed for me, ensuring that there wasn't a gap whilst I changed! - There's nothing worse than that dreaded gap, making for the quickest change in the history of quick-changes. So, I was in no rush and had plenty of time to make my choices. (Don't worry, I overheard them say that they're getting some velcro to sort out the gap. Gap no more!) I left chuffed with an oversized houndstooth coat (£9.99!) and a pearl-style necklace. CHAS may be the newest charity shop in town but it's definitely my favourite so far! There is a toilet and a tub (both not useable) ! Then a bed in another section, arm chairs , a stove , kitchen are and a garden area as you walk in! It's got really cool wall paper up and it decorated very professionally. A man shopping next to me said "it feels like I'm in someone's home!" Which was the point of the decor so looks like they achieved their desire goal.
