We are staying in Zeist at one of the local hotels and me and my three young children (10 year old…read moretwin boys, and a 13 year old daughter) are trying out the local restaurants. Tonight was Tapa Tapa. As you can see from our five stars, we thoroughly enjoyed everything about this restaurant. First off, there were two options for the menu. An "all you can eat" option and an "a la carte" option. We chose the "a la carte" option, but at the end we would have been slightly better off with the all you can eat choice, so think carefully how hungry you are before you decide. Next time we will opt for the all you can eat. This option is the same as many sushi restaurants, with a piece of paper where you can tick off the choices you wish to make for each round of your orders. A much appreciated plus was that water was served in carafe, and so we did not have to pay for bottles of water which just last night at another place came to 12 Euros just for the water! We made up for it by ordering a beer and a sangria. I likely won't order the sangria again, not because it was bad, but it was just a bit too sweet to go with our meal. I'm going to stick to the beer, which was a very nice compliment to all the different dishes. As one would expect with a tapas restaurant we had a good sampling of many different things. Everything was delicious, but special mention has to be made for the deviled eggs (huevos rellenos) which were infused with a barbaque sauce that made an old recipie new. It was a very plesant surprise. We also ordered the empanada espinacas (twice) which were really wonderful. Small bite sized spinich empanadas with a hint of goat chees were light and delicious. I also want to mention the datiles con bacon, which were exactly as I expected them to be. The dates were delicious and not overwheliming and the bacon was cooked perfectly to make an ideal mixture of taists in the mouth. My only comment (not criticism) would have to be addressed to the chorizo de bellota, which was very good, but didn't surprise me the way everything else did. Final mention to the deserts, all of which were outstanding, but of special note were the torta de benofee which was unique and delicious as well as the fondue de chocolate, which provided fresh fruit to dip in melted chocolate. Delicious! Finally a huge thank you to the waitstaff who were personable, kind to the children and long-suffering when one of the boys spilled a bottle of water all over the place. Overall, a wonderful evening at a wonderful restarurant.

It's a chilly early spring day and their Lobster Bisque was perfect. The butter is perfect too. Every detail covered. I'll be back for their 37€ prix dice dinner.

Little did I know this was the restaurant where my Opa proposed to her - what a beautiful surprise!!! The location is remote, peaceful and the grounds of the restaurant are beautiful (including a garden where they grow some of their own produce). The service was attentive, friendly and respectful. We went for the largest tasting menu with wine pairings - the pairings were also very well received (my oma mentioning she did not like red wine much, but after her first taste said "this is pretty good I think I could like this"). The food was truly gorgeous, thoughtful and technique driven without being overbearing. The ingredients were fresh and I still recall (a year later) the langoustine, foie and green apple dish that was the stand out of the night -- that's my kind of surf n' turf. It is experiences like this that remind me why the Michelin guide might be so stingy in cities like Chicago - because the food here was truly on a different level and wildly deserving of a star. DELICIOUS!!!!

It's always amazing to find a place that just opened. Bangkok Cuisine is located in the center of…read moreZeist, and just opened 4 months ago. It's a cozy little place, modern, a mix of wood, Asian architecture and hip seats. I viewed the menu in advance and saw they served green curry. My favorite, so I actually already knew what I wanted to order. When I saw that they also serve Tom Kha soup, I was momentarily confused, because that's like the next best thing for me to green curry. But as I work nearby, I vowed to come back for lunch and try the soup. My love went for a very spicy version of the green curry with tofu and I kept it safe on a medium spiced. The curries where served in bowls upon a heater. Rice was served in cute little disks on a separate plate. The taste was very good. It wasn't the best curry I ever had, but it surely was lovely. A nice blend of flavors, with lots and lots of bamboo shoots and pea-like objects I wasn't familiar with, with a hard shell, soft inside and a bitter taste. They complemented the taste of the curry very well. I drank a red Merlot to accompany the curry, because I love red wine with curries. My love tried a Singha, a traditional Thai beer. The tables where adorned with a Thai touch, which made us talk about visiting Thailand and daydreaming what countries along to visit. A Thai restaurant that inspired you to go visit said country, should be interesting no? We had a very good time and will certainly come back to this cute place.

You could tell you had arrived because the building itself was a totally different style, the old Dutch School type with a thatched roof, from the surrounding homes. Large. Parking was free, a nice attribute in Holland. The entrance is to your left when you drive through the gates. We were a large group, and we received the "rijst tafel" (rice table) arrangement: super tasty and elaborate and well-prepared. Fresh ingredients, imported Indonesian seasonings, locally sourced. Some seasonings were obviously hand-made, and quite delicious. I believe you have to pre-order this a day or two in advance, as it takes days to prepare some of the dishes. And though I am not an expert on Indonesian foods, I can tell these days that I know more now after the time in Portland spent eating Asian foods. Everything was made in an authentic style with excellent quality ingredients. Starting with a special salad and loempia, we dove in with gusto. The spicy foods were made with tolerable levels, although I stayed away from the dishes with whole peppers in them (logically!). Our group regrouped several times and we shared all dishes, lovely. Dessert consisted of, what else, a heavenly, many layered spice cake. I definitely would come back here.
