Chicken bone in bussup
Zarin B.

First time trying trini food and at first I was a little overwhelmed and not sure what to order. But standing in line, I listened to what everyone else was getting and decided to try a regular double with tamarind and pepper sauce ($2.50), and a chicken bussup with mixed sauce ($13). The speed and expertise of the man behind the counter was cool to watch. And the food! Omg yummmmm! The chicken curry was reminiscent of the Bengali chicken curries I grew up with. Love that they use every part of the chicken for the bone-in chicken. And it was SO much food for $13! But the double was just epic. I will dream about it until I can go get more. The tamarind and pepper sauce takes it to another level. It's messy but finger-licking level good. Ugh give me more please.

This place has been around for a while and I've passed it so many times without stepping in. As a Caribbean woman, I have to take my curry seriously. Cause not everybody knows how to do curry right but De Hot Pot is doing something right! So far I've purchased the chicken doubles and roti, boneless and with bone. And I conclude that I prefer the boneless option better. Hear me out, the curry tastes a bit different from the dark to white meat but I prefer the curry with the chicken breast. I know...surprise surprise! It just tastes a little different and personally, I prefer it. It much easier to eat without the hassle of the bones and it's so tender and juicy!! Omgggg I also have had the beef roti, separated which is yummy! They're a neighborhood gem and Only Take Cash. So bring your wallet but don't forget the green stuff.

My family visited yesterday and it is clearly very popular. Being gluten free I can't participate in the roti. I did try having the spinach/ bhagi, which I did not enjoy it was bland and not not done trini style. It is a cash only spot so walk with cash or there is an ATM at the door. There are many trini drinks such as orchard and solo.

A very good place for Trinidadian food. De Hot Pot is another hidden place in Flatbush and Lefferts Garden. It doesn't look like much. But don't judge of course. The food is kickass and there's plenty for meat eaters and vegetarians. It has a counter to order at. It's just a very small place. There's only three tables. Most orders are carryout. The good thing is this food often is portable. Rotis are probably the most popular item. These are like wraps. Get them either with a meat or just vegetables if you like. Vegetarian ones are $9 and are filled up. In these are spinach and sweet potatoes. These are a pretty big size. Carryout is the most popular way to order because there's not much room inside. It's cash only. The food comes out quick and there's usually not a long wait.

De high prices.

The doubles, and the vegetable roti. You have to go here. I always leave way too full and 100% satiated when I come here.

The portions sizes were large - very generous with the filling. It's probably the best double I've ever had. The items were packed with flavor and spice. There was no chance this was being eaten by hand. Fork and knife were required, and even then I still walked away full with leftovers. Beyond the size, the food itself was really good. The duck was tender, flavorful, and well seasoned, and the roti held everything together without getting soggy. It felt hearty and comforting in the best way, like food meant to actually fill you up rather than look pretty. Service was straightforward and efficient. This is not a place you come to linger or be coddled, but that is part of the charm. You order, you get your food, and you move on happier and heavier than when you arrived. Please come and try this place out!

These savory pastries pack a flavor explosion that can't be beat. Made of flour and fried, these moist but crispy disks are stuffed with your filling of choice. You can have meat, seafood, veggies or just plain if you are not feeling fancy. After selecting the filling, make sure you ask for " everything " toppings. The toppings consist a healthy slathering of spiced chickpeas, tangy tamarind chutney and spicy pepper sauce. If you can't handle spice, leave out the pepper but without the sauce, the depth of flavor is absolutely lastonishing. I selected one shrimp and onw goat double, my partner in crime filled his with assorted veggies. The vibe is fast paced and super busy so grab a menu, decide what you want and be ready to order when it's your turn. They also sell assorted beverages to help cool you off. I'm studying the menu for my return trip. Enjoy.

My double came out to $2.72 (w/tax) and when I went to eat it, I wasn't impressed. Visually, it's a lot smaller then that doubles that I get at other Trini restaurants. The dough was not chewy with a good pull and the chickpeas was still hard. It wasn't cooked enough and the flavor was lacking. As for the topping, it was weak. No graded cucumbers either.
