I love this small West Indian place. It's a great deal for items like "doubles" this potato and channa (chickpeas) filling with tasty toppings on two slabs of a yummy homemade type fry bread that is all Trinidadian style. And the price is just right, $1.25!!! There is a definite Indian correlation in the style and taste of the food as there are many Indians who live in these regions of the Caribbean. They also have homemade mauby sorrel drink that is made from mauby roots ---sweet and delicious. My friend and I go there when we are hungry and don't want to spend too much money. The owners are pretty cool and will answer any questions I may have if the place isn't too crowded/busy. It appears to be family owned which I really like as well. Great little shop for Trinidadian food. Come for their roti. Huge portion size and a great value. They have two different kinds of roti, white flour and whole wheat. I prefer the white flour one which reminds me of Dos Toros's tortilla. The wheat one is drier and better if you're getting a roti to go so it doesn't get soggy or you can also have the roti packed separately from the filling. The space is small with only two or three tables so take out is probably more common. read more

I have been coming to this place for almost a year and I have to say the food is pretty amazing. However, lately they have been getting more and more skimpy with their portions. The worse part is that they kno they are being cheap, since they never argue if i want more toppings. De Hot Spot is the 3rd incarnation of a location that has been serving roti for over 20 years. In the late 80's the dal poorie was the best around, as it was made to order, usually a 15-20 minute wait but so worth it. The place was sold a few years ago to some friendly albeit clueless people who had no idea how to cook or run a business - which eventually led to it being closed. The current owners have done a good job of reincarnating the place's legacy. The roti is very, very good but comparing them to the amazing, "made to order" skins of 20 yrs ago wouldn't be fair. Their doubles, curried chick peas (channa), sandwiched by Indian fried bread (baras) -Trinidad's 24 hour street delicacy, are very tasty - the BEST in Brooklyn, beating out "A&A" on Nostrand Ave and probably most spots in northern Trinidad (quite a feat for a non-stand alone doubles place). Make sure to ask for the usual condiments: pepper, kutchula and tamarind, with your doubles. Hot spot's uniqueness are their offerings of rural Indo-Trindadian vegetarian side dishes like bhaji, egg-plant, pumpkin "chokas" and things like sahina (a spinach infused, fried dough appetizer) - unusual for a roti shop in mostly Afro-Caribbean Brooklyn. I don't know what the love for the doubles at this place is. I went and got two tamarind doubles for $3. He takes out two halves of bread, slaps some chickpea on them, I ask for tamarind sauce, and he wraps them up and gives them to me. The chickpea and tamarind sauce soak into the already fried bread, making a greasy, saucy mess. There's not many chickpeas in the chickpea mix, so it's mostly fried dough with tamarind and whatever sauce they cook the chickpeas in. I had to throw away my second double because it had just become a limp blob of fried bread with more fatty sauce. The bread isn't fluffy or thick enough to absorb all the sauce so a lot of it spills out. I guess it's cheap, but why put that in your body if it's not appetizing? Maybe the entrees are better here, but the doubles are overrated. The spot is small, slightly dingy and has a few tables. There is an outlet that you can charge your phone in. read more

I had a goat roti and two doubles with everything, and I can say that while it was good, it wasn't really anything that special. The doubles were alright, but not very flavorful. The goat roti had a very small portion of the potatoes and beans, and the goat meat they gave you still had the bone, which made eating the roti a pain. After years of searching, I haven't found better roti, chana or curry goat in all of Brooklyn (Manhattan is not even in the consideration set). This place is the real deal. Every bite is an explosion of flavor and magic. They had a stewed pumpkin side when I went in last that was also outrageous. We happened upon here when we went to visit the Botanical Gardens. It had decent reviews so we decided to give it a try. Literally a hole in the wall establishment but not too shabby. They had speakers outside playing caribbean music which was cool. We went inside and the staff was extrememly friendly and helpful as it seemed like most of the people in there were locals who took their food to go. We ordered a roti with all the vegetables dishes and plantains. They mix it all in one bowl which I was not a huge fan of since it's hard to taste any one dish in particular. If you're looking for a veggie roti, I would highly recommend a trip two blocks south to Ali's Roti Shop. Their veggie roti has a bigger variety of veggies and comes together much better than De Hot Pot's. However, for the price, there's not a lot to complain about at De Hot Pot. If you're looking for doubles, you've come to the right place. This is the best $1.50 you'll ever spend. A perfect snack, much better than the doubles at Ali's. As for the review that commented on the clean kitchen: I'm not sure what Hot Pot you were eating at, but it wasn't DE Hot Pot. This place is as grimy as any other place on Flatbush. Got takeout for lunch here today. It was my first time trying out this kind of place, and I wasn't sure what kinda stuff was best or what to get. The guy at the counter was very helpful and helped me pick out what to get. You can either get your food in a roti or traditional style over rice. I chose to get it over rice, and you get two veggies and a meat. I chose curried chickpeas, spinach, and stewed goat. It was incredibly delicious very flavorful. The guy also gave me a free appetizer of some really fluffy delicious bread with a sweet chick pea spread on it. The food was great, and the huge portion was only $8. From the first time I remember checking out this finely named storefront, I was welcomed with a beautiful smile and a pleasant attitude. These folks are nice. And they make a nice roti too. It isn't my top roti spot, and there's tons of options within a mile radius, but they're always good and usually have sorrel, albeit one on the sweeter side. Not all of their customers are. I've learned to notice who came in before and after me, and be aggressive in making my orders so's someone else doesn't sidle up who came in after.
