I don't know if I'm the first asian person reviewing this restaurant because looking at the past reviews, it looks like majority of the reviewers are not asian, but as a person who has lived in Hawaii and Japan, this was an absolute disgrace. We got the "Tonkutsu" (I don't know what their mix was with this ramen because it's usually called tonkotsu) ramen and it tasted...different? Tonkotsu ramen from authentic Japanese restaurants have the umami, the richness of the broth, but the broth in this "Tonkutsu" ramen was light, salty, and had an overpowering taste of onion. I'm assuming their twist with this ramen is adding pickled ginger to it, which is weird to say the least because why would you add pickled ginger to ramen? Also their spice level 4 on a 5 scale was not spicy at all. It literally looks like they used 3 tablespoons of chili oil and called it a wrap. We also got the Japanese curry, and oh my goodness...the curry was definitely a curry, but it was NOT Japanese at all. The sauce was really light in color, not rich, and had all these vegetables as fillers. In Japan, there is the famous CoCo ICHIBANYA Curry house, and I don't know if the chefs wanted to add their own twist as well to this curry, but comparing the original curry from CoCo to this, it was an absolute disgrace as well. Also, the chicken that came with the curry had no taste, no seasoning whatsoever. Finally, we also ordered the sushi combo (8 nigiri, california roll, miso soup, and ¿¿salad??). Not a bad deal for $20. However, the nigiri did not look fresh. I don't know what these reviewers standards are for fresh seafood because when the seafood is fresh, it has a bright color, but nothing had a bright color at all. They also had a twist with the california roll by adding tobiko on the top, but no complaints there because it doesn't really change anything other than the texture. But let me add, the WASABI!! looked absolutely trash. It was definitely fake, and I'm attaching a picture because that's what caught my eye the most. I'm sorry but it looked like feces. The texture was also gritty, and had a bitter aftertaste. If this wasabi looks normal to you, I'd consider reevaluating your standards of Japanese food. The pickled ginger that came with the sushi and nigiri also had this weird after taste, and it definitely was not fresh. Pickled ginger usually has a pink hue if properly pickled, but this was orange. Orange pickled ginger is common for cheap sushi restaurants, so I did not expect that coming from a restaurant charging $15 for a "Tonkutsu" ramen. The service was good. Host was friendly. Environment a little cramped, but they do have quite a few customers during dinner time, so that's not their fault, this is what gives the extra star instead of a single star. read more

I'm not sure what happened, but Pear Thai, a favorite Thai restaurant, has been replaced by "De Asian". It's a silly name, but that shouldn't deter you from eating here. Anacortes has never really had a sushi restaurant with any staying power, so we were particularly happy to hear they would be serving sushi. Upon entering, we were hailed by several weight staff and probably the two cooks behind the sushi counter. Looking at the menu, we noticed a few of our favorites from the Pear Thai restaurant menu, but we were here for sushi. A small restaurant, in a small town, in the off season, can't justify the variety that you might get in Seattle or Vancouver. There are maybe eight Nigiri options and an abundant selection of various sushi rolls. There are also a couple of sushi and sashimi combos on the menu. We ordered two of the sushi combos, which come with the California roll also, and also two other rolls, a tempura shrimp roll and a salmon roll. We started off with an order of edamame, and the combos came with miso soup and a little mixed green salad with a soy sauce/ sesame oil dressing - both very good. Sushi combos arrived, tastefully plated, with undyed ginger and none of that tacky plastic greenery. The Nigiri sushi (8 pieces) were generous and bright slices of the usual fish, with a sweet shrimp and a broiled something eel (?) - it would have been a nice touch to be told what kind of fish we were eating. Shortly thereafter, the two other rolls showed up. They were beautifully constructed and tasty. We deliberately ordered a lot of things just to get a sampler of what they made. Never before have I ordered too much sushi, but tonight we took some home. A few minor criticisms collectively knocked a star off this review: -no drink menu. For your information, they have beer and wine, and caffeinated tea. - the edamame seemed a little underdone - no specials, recommendations, or descriptions of the combo from the wait staff. - their to-go containers are styrofoam. This may seem like a minor thing, but there are biodegradable options, it's completely unnecessary, and it's important to me. I'm sure they're using sustainably caught fish, they should also be using sustainable packaging. It's not 1975. I hope these guys do well. I expect during our tourist season they will do a brisk business. read more

Lovely decor and staff. Tuna jalapeno(Tuna belly, Masago, Seaweed Salad were lovely as was the Miso Soup. I cannot recommend the tempura appetizer as the shrimp were extremely thin strips of shrimp; the batter was gummy and the vegs were limited to onions , carrots, and broccoli. I prefer a tempura that is crisp and has a variety of vegs such as asparagus, eggplant, green beans, lotus, sweet potato and okra(when available). I will return to try other dishes read more

Exceptional food served by friendly wait staff in a pleasant environment. The food tastes fresh (not heavy with oils or salt), the portions are generous and the taste is outstanding. My friend and I dined here today. She had "The Bomb", a special roll,of deep fried tuna, salmon, cream cheeses avocado, mango and special sauces. She could not stop raving about it. She is petite but she ate the entire thing--10 pieces? I ordered vegetable pineapple fried rice. It was outstanding. I asked for a side of a mild sweet-sour sauce (not the thick, syrupy kind!). The sauce was the perfect complement to the dish. We were very impressed with this new place and will definitely be returning. They serve Thai and Japanese cuisine--both delicious and exceptionally done. You have to check them out! read more

We live in Honolulu where we have access to amazing, fresh ahi. My sister wanted to eat good raw ahi when we met her in Anacortes. She lives in Vancouver BC where all raw fish must be previously frozen & she said that the source of the fish is undisclosed. It was imperative that the restaurant I selected for us in Anacortes had fresh ahi for sashimi & nigiri sushi. I Yelped & Googled several restaurants. Before selecting De Asian. I called ahead to ask if the ahi was fresh & they also told me that they fly it in from Hawaii. We had the most amazing dinner, the fish was indeed very fresh & good. The sushi chef is Thai, very personable & he sent us a special hamachi appetizer that was fantastic. My sis & my husband ordered the sashimi & sushi platters. The pieces of fish were nice & thick, shiso & shredded daikon were super fresh & crisp. Only disappointment was that the ramen noodles were overcooked & broth tasteless. Went twice last week. Always been a little leary of sushi outside of major metropolitan areas. I was not disappointed at all. The sushi was cold, thick slices and all at a great price. This place is just getting started. You can see that the model for a successful venture is there, just hope the get enough business to maintain and improve. The sushi was a little stickier than I am used too, but it tasted fine. My son ordered the phad Thai and he really liked it. Additionally he loved the sample appetizer. This place has potential. I'm shocked by all the 4 and 5 star reviews? It took over 30 minutes for a take out order at 2pm in the afternoon (pre ordered thru website). Tofu salad roll, veggie sushi roll and miso, a very simple order to prepare. The price was very high for the portion size, veggie sushi was tiny and bland salad roll (mostly lettuce). Extremely fresh fish, I had yellow fin tuna, tuna, salmon skin hand rolled sushi and a mix of yellow fin tuna and tuna sashimi. All were excellent, particularly because I had these dishes with an ice cold Kirin Ichiban. Tye service was outstanding! as usual when l eat sushi, I sat at the bar and to get to know the cooks, I stroke a conversation with the owner who during our conversation prepared the dishes, he told me how he receives the various fish from Hawaii. He was very pleasant and helpful by suggesting the sashimi. I will defiantly be back, and I strongly recommend others to try the restaurant. read more

My mom and I love this place. We came in when they first opened and were a bit underwhelmed. I don't like doing reviews right after a grand opening (especially if it's not positive,) to give the new business a chance to correct the kinks. De Asian has more than redeemed themselves in terms of freshness and portion at good prices. For $20, the sushi combo is 8 pieces, california roll with salad and miso soup is a fantastic deal. The slices of fish and shellfish is fresh and generous, and the staff is always so nice and attentive. My mom is Japanese and approves, which is a big feat haha. They do have a large variety of Asian infused dishes for the family that I haven't tried other than the ramen which was very good ago. They have kept a lot of their previous Thai entrees, which I recall was wonderful, but were very pleased with the addition of Japanese cuisine and no longer need to drive out of town for amazing sushi. read more

Food good, not wow, but good. Service was a little slow, but very friendly. Portion to price ratio sucks. Yes prices nowadays, everywhere, are sky high. That being said, it's not fair to charge me almost $20 for a sushi roll that is the same size and quality as what I would get at the grocery store. Or to give me a portion of stir fry noodles that cost twice as much as a Chinese restaurant and you get half as much for it. I've eaten here several times now. Up until today I've only ever eaten the sushi here. I wanted to wait to write a review until I'd eaten from the regular menu. The last time I was in I overheard someone raving about the curried duck. I'm a big fan of duck so I decided to go in for lunch today and order it. I've had duck curry before, many times in many places, the dish here can stand up against any of them. The half duck was cooked perfectly, crispy skin and succulent meat, the curry was just spicy enough for me (you can request a spice level). It was terrific! Now, as I mentioned before, I've been in many times before for the sushi. It's really top notch, it's fresh and flavorful, and prepared expertly. The sushi staff is knowledgeable and will make recommendations if you tell them the sort of things you like. I'm so happy to have a sushi place in town, but even more so because they're a really good sushi place. I would like to mention the staff, obviously I give high marks to the sushi staff, but there's one waiter who seems to be working every time I go in, if he ever takes time off I can't say when, but he's great at his job! He knows the menu, he's great at recommending dishes, and he's quick and friendly. This place has all the qualities that make me believe they'll have a long life in this community. This is the old Thai Pear all clean and newly decorated with a highly varied menu. It now has a Sushi bar. Can't say much for the spicy tuna roll, Haggens is better, but its version of unagi domburi was pretty good. The tomago was tasteless and the miso too salty. No cold dry sake which was disappointing. The reason I won't return was the two servers were in such a state of panic pounding around like a herd of hippos that the meal became all about them, which is not why I go to a restaurant. I had lunch at the De Asian today and I was so impressed! The ambience was nice, and the service was terrific. I ordered the rare seared Ahi tuna appetizer and a simple side salad. It was absolutely delicious and the presentation was fantastic. De Asian was my favorite restaurant in Anacortes. I went every time I was in town. Sometimes, twice in 1 visit. I told all of my friends that they should try it. I just had the worst experience. I requested the salmon poke with the sauce on the side. The sushi chef came to my table and with a very loud voice said he couldn't make my order and asked if I had ever had poke before. He treated me like I was an idiot. I have poke almost weekly. I then asked if he would use light sauce and again he asked if I had poke before. The bowl came with tuna rather than salmon and it had a sickly sweet sauce. Completely inedible. I didn't want another confrontation so just left it. I told the waiter that we wouldn't return. He looked a bit surprised and said ok. Seriously, who treats good customers who tip at least 30% like this? read more

Decided to stop in & we were glad we did. At first, we were greeted "for here or To-go" which felt weird but we proceeded. The server sat us and didn't say a word. Also weird but hey, it was dinner time. Maybe the server was having a night. The server actually was very nice and patient while I looked through the menu. There are a lot of great options and so my husband & I got the sushi for apps and then he ordered the Spicy Chicken & I ordered the curry Duck. The sushi was sooooo good & we didn't wait for long at all. Definitely a 10 in my book. The dinner was great as well. The chicken was flavorful and not dry. The duck was also juicy and full of flavor with out overpowering the duck. The other server brought out our food and was pleasant. The portions were large and worth the money. The ambiance was nice. We didn't love that our light kept flickering but hey, it happens. Also, the light fixtures were a little dusty. I wouldn't want to be the one to clean them. The little soy sauce jars are so cute.
