The 1850 courthouse is the obvious anchor, rising up in full Green Revival style and giving the square a strong historic center. Around it, you'll find a fountain with a water display, a statue of Abraham Lincoln, and a massive Civil War era cannon labeled as a trophy of the war for the union, all of which add a little extra texture to the space even when nothing is going on. The square itself is clean and open, with plenty of room to walk around and take in the details without feeling rushed. As a quick stop to appreciate some local history and architecture, it's a solid visit, especially when the holiday quiet gives you the whole place to yourself. Spend a moment thinking about the plaque in front of the courthouse, "Remember the promises you made in the attic" that commemorates the Great Dayton Flood of March 25, 1913. For me, the square is best at christmas time. The weekend after thanksgiving is the tree lighting ceremony. Local celebrities (aka annoying news anchors) show up, we all sing jingle bells, and we light our tree. It's not quite a Seuss-esque Whos-down-in-Whoville gathering, but it's close. While you're there, ride some horse-drawn carriages, try to get a sneak-taste of the gingerbread houses, and check out the old Rike's display. For a very long time tubas accompanied the jingle bells sing along. This was always a great trainwreck of a performance and a helluva a lot of fun. I wonder what has happened to our tubas...

Overall it was a fun and worthwhile experience. People at the places we visited were friendly including at our hotel. On the negative side, there were a lot of street closures and detours when trying to get around the city. Some were due to construction but also street closures because of festivals and outdoor activities that were happening. But, other than dealing with the heavy traffic created by the closures, my GPS (and dead reckoning wherever closures were not reflected) got me where I wanted to go. We spent a lot of our time in reunion activities but did get out to see some of what Dayton has to offer.

The logs from those huge old trees still hold up this 2-story building. Once you step inside you'll feel as if you've gone back in time. The West Carrollton branch of the DML library system shares a building with the Civic Center,…read morealthough you aren't really able to tell from the inside. It boasts just over 16,000 square feet and was renovated in 2018. Reservable spaces include two 4-person quads, a 10-person conference room and a community room for up to 50 people. The conference room at this location is one of the larger conference rooms I've seen thus far at any DML branch, with reclining office chairs to boot. However, neither the quads or conference room have windows facing the outside. There is a quiet room with a two 4-person tables and a couple reading chairs that does have windows to allow light in from the outside. There is also a teen corner with a few booths, but other than that there are limited tables throughout the main part of the library, mainly just reading chairs. Like all DML branches, this branch is clean and well-maintained.

I drove there on a day they were going to be open .. went around 1pm .. figured no way they wouldn't be open. Well do the the carona virus they were only open for 3 hours .. 3-6. Nooooo way could they be bothered. instead they put people items in the lobby where anyone could take them. i was the only one there .. and the staff were in there ... I was speechless at their attitude. Another time i put a movie on hold .. was waited and waited and waited A YEAR .. apparently not all the branches share the items bought with tax dollars. i challenge you to put a movie on hold at any of the Dayton branches and do the same at any other area libraries ... you will die of old age waiting on Dayton. The only reason i use it is there is a rare time when the other libraries dont have something. but not a fan. Especially when they are funded by donations and taxes .. you'd think they would be more concerned with providing better service to keep the donations and voters willing to fund them.

A small office with friendly people and quick/efficient service. Both times I've gone to this location I've been in and out in under 30 minutes (this last time I might have been there for 15). Probably better that they don't do driver's tests, etc., but if all you need is some documents updated, renewal of driver's license, or other items that don't require you to go to one of the main locations in town, this is it.

So we packed up the car and came here ASAP. This park will be great to visit when it's officially warm. The jungle gym has three sections for three different age groups, which is awesome! You don't have to worry about the little ones getting run over by the bigger kids. They also have a little warmer park/sprinkler section that is fenced off and will be open when summer comes. Lastly, there's an amphitheater. I'm hoping there will be concerts there this summer. The trail I mentioned goes on to Wegerzyn Park. I think it's about a five minute bike ride or a 15-20 minute walk.

After many weeks of self quarantine I was so excited to be spending a few days up in Dayton. My first impression of @islandmetropark was it's large size and many paved trails that are great for hiking, walking, running and bike riding. These trails traverse across large open fields of grass past trees, soccer fields, tennis courts, jungle jims & swing sets. Unfortunately the swing sets and jungle jims were closed to people due to the covid-19 pandemic. My grandson's favorite trail took us across a small suspension bridge over a river where people can frequently be seen kayaking. He also enjoys playing on the river bank close, to where the roadway passes by the park. The day we were there the park staff was very busy working on the park landscaping and we saw geese that my grandson wanted to chase. My daughter likes that the paved trails are great to use when it's been raining. My grandson loves to run and play in the fields of grass.
