Heads up: the gift shop closed before we could grab anything, and the closing announcements were pretty firm--if you weren't already in line, it was a no-go. Totally fair, just something to keep in mind when planning your visit! There are so many exhibits that we definitely had to move quickly, but it was still 100% worth it. Pro tip: save the downstairs water feature for last--it's an absolute blast for the whole family! As a special needs family, we felt really comfortable here. Our 5-year-old loved the freedom to walk and explore, and our 1-year-old had a great time in the littles area and with the water play. The huge cloud play structure looked amazing, but we skipped it since there's only one way in and out--just didn't feel like the right call for us this time. Bonus: let your kids take the stairs to burn off energy! But if you've got a stroller, wheelchair, or just want an easier route, elevators are available too. Overall, such a fun spot--we'll definitely be back (with more time next time)!

The museum is not very large and most of our kiddos love the Truckee river exhibit as they play there more. It could be the age. Just bring some spare clothes or a towel as they may be drenched. As they get older they may like to do the other exhibits more. They have lego, space, anatomy, physics, and engineering zones. They also have a lab with daily activities. The amazing part is there are plenty of things to do. The downside is the parking lot gets packed fast, but thats a good thing. So give yourself time if looking for a spot. Its super cool for the kiddos and there is even a cute little toddler playground. So please enjoy the space and time.

There are different areas to see with different exhibits. They have one of the original minted coin presses and the man that was giving the information was dressed the part, entertaining, and knowledgeable. All the staff was engaging in each area and you could tell that they genuinely were interested in the history and teaching others about it. The kids favorite area was the "ghost town" since there is a mine that you go through. I definitely learned things I didn't know about Nevada (not originally from the area though).

They are museum buffs, so it was natural to come here today. We have visited most of the Reno Museums together already. We spent 3 hours here. Also very kid and teacher friendly. 3 school tours today. Lastly, a small gift shop. Ambiance - So many exhibits, and ever changing exhibits. Featured exhibits and of course permanent exhibits. See pictures and their website. Online exhibits are available also. Also, it was cool that this used to be the US mint. And on Saturday, you can still see the mint press in action. Programs and events; see their website. 3 floors, the bottom floor being a mine. So a decent size location. Small parking lot, but always plenty of street parking. Open 6 days a week 8:30am to 4:30pm from Tuesday to Sunday. Closed Mondays. Service - Good. Self service mostly. Price - $10, affordable. Member discounts available; see their website. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1939. So much history.

Also, a hands on photo station for adults and children with period costumes to wear in the photo. It is un-manned so be prepared to run around to get into position. This venue would be a great opportunity to have a fundraiser or party.

While we stopped to use the restroom and breastfeed baby we got to have a great conversation with the gift shop lady, spoke about places to visit, she mentioned about she went on the road with her dad to the Grand Canyon, she recommended some places in yellow stone. We talked about gift shop items, she was so nice and my mommy brain forgot her name. We really enjoyed walking and admiring all the cars, they have some vehicles used in movies too which was so cool to see, (we are ghost rider fans ) so that was amazing, you can see the wear on them ! my favorite part was the photo opportunity they have set up with one vintage car, we really enjoyed it and took so many pictures Also favorite part was the president speech prop we played and gave speeches and it was funny and cool ! Getting to play in the kids interactive area as an adult is cool too ! We stopped by the gift shop on the way out to buy a couple of memory items , a beautiful Reno mug , key chain, a sticker and a magnet.

So, I went here Saturday, June 1, 2019 during the 18th Annual Oodles of Noodles Festival and Pasta Cook-Off in Old Town Dayton. The site is run by the Historical Society of Dayton Valley and is only open during events like this, or by appointment, so I needed to go here at this time if I wanted to see it. I first had gone to the fire department tent to ask where it was. The nice employee there led me to it, about a quarter of a block away. Outside of this historic landmark, there is a rock marker with a plaque on it which gives a little of the history of the building. The building itself is from circa 1861 and has no electricity or running water. They used gas lanterns to light it back in the day and a coal or wood-burning heater to heat it (see here: https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/dayton-historic-firehouse-and-jail-dayton?select=QtEoYJq92efzQtGo_Upnow&utm_campaign=www_photo_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) ). It is two rooms. The front is a garage where a 1900's motorized firetruck is, on a concrete floor; and the back was converted to a jail after the Lyon County Courthouse in Dayton down the street burned down. They had no place to put it, so they brought it here. The fire engine is named "Granny", and i think they did run it in Parades, like the Nevada Day Parade, when it ran. Now they have one or two other old fire engines they use. There was a sign not to sit in the seat, as it was fragile, although Mabel, the docent from the historical society, let a small child sit there for pics. There is also a bell which people can ring, via a cord which goes up though a small hole to the roof. The chime of this bell is different, on purpose, from the one in the museum, so people would know when there was a fire. There were various items in the truck and displays around it, including old firemen's boots, helmets and equipment; glass bottles; an old fire extinguisher; a letter, and a historic freezer and refrigerator. Going in the back by the jail, on the wood floor, was scary for me. The planks creaked as I walked on them. I am heavy, so I thought my weight might collapse them, so I walked carefully. The jail itself is like a cage, with two cells connected, for up to two people in each one. There was very little room in each cell. They were maybe 6 feet long by 4 feet wide, with bunk beds and a small pot where you went to the bathroom. Mabel was so nice. She let me sit on the chair in the front to rest and talked to me when she wasn't helping the other visitors. She told me about the historical society, and you could tell she loved her job. She also was one of the people who wrote the guide they give out for visitors to the many historical sites in Dayton. As I went in the back room, Mabel said she would turn on the lights for me and she went out the side door, presumably to turn them on. A few minutes later, I asked why the lights weren't on, and she laughed. She said to get light in there, they open the door, lol! She then told me this building had no electricity! I was very happy to visit here, as Mabel made me feel very welcome, just as another historical society volunteer made me feel welcome at their museum the other day. I recommend going here when you get the chance.
