I have been a happy patient of Champlain Dental for many years. Dr. Salidas was a very good…read moredentist and also a very good person. However Dr. Salidas has retired and a new dentist (Dr. Mersal) has taken over. The first time I was seen by the new dentist I was informed of three cavities that needed to be filled. I was told that one of the cavities would be $250 and the other two would be $200 each for a total of $650. I am retired and on a fixed income without benefits (the dentist was aware of lack of benefits) and $650 was more than I wanted to spend at one time. So I made an appointment to have the worst cavity filled for $250. When the dentist was filling the cavity I was informed that he would like to fill a cavity in the tooth next to it while I was already "frozen" and save a return trip. I agreed. When the procedure was complete and I was preparing to pay I was informed that I would have to pay more than the cost quoted. I was also told I still had two cavities remaining. When I questioned the increase I was told the dentist had to drill more than he expected. The cost went from $250 to $300. And the cavity in the the tooth next to it was one that he did not know about before (even though I get x-rays at the recommended times and had a check up three days previous). He charged me $230 for the newly found cavity. My expected $250 trip to the dentist just became $530. Not very nice for fixed income budget. So I have to wonder about the competence of this dentist when he could not use the x-rays to determine the extent of the original cavity and also not being aware of a cavity in the neighboring tooth three days after a check up.. Obviously I am now changing dentists and would not recommend this dentist to anybody. I need to trust my health care providers and I certainly cannot trust this dentist.
