I am leaving David Lloyd Finchley after 18 months of membership. The classes have been excellent, and the Ygym has helped build a set of wonderful, in balance muscles. I am fitter than I have been for years. The reason for my departure is the recent transformation of a previously unisex, tranquil, shared area of the gym (a place of stretching, warm up and cool downs, yoga poses etc.) into a shadow boxing club for young men. This transformation has been led by one enthusiastic, ebullient gym-member and is spreading to his cronies. I spoke to the management about this user led reassignment of space. The management told me that there was no policy to prevent gym members from using an area of the gym for an activity that it was not designed for. Out of a total of 8 mats for stretching etc., 3 are now highly compromised. Clearly, the ebullient gym member has no understanding of boundaries and David Lloyd has no way of helping him understand about how to share space fairly. If you want your boundaries tresspassed upon, and to have that trespass legitimised by controlling authorities, join this flagship David Lloyd. read more

I like to thank the David Lloyd Finchley branch management for their brilliant work in resolving the problems with the car parking difficulties in the disabled and family area of the carpark. My thanks go to Gopal Gautama and Joe Welch (GM and deputy GM) for their strategic thinking and introducing the costly valet parking combined with the carpark control; as well as taking other crucial steps such as challenging the offenders and issuing penalty tickets by an outside contractor. I also like to thank the operational managers Livia Blanaru, Alex Huber-Gurry, Glenn Burdett, Harriet Drury and the members of staff at the reception Chloe Fearon and Tina Sinai for enforcing the policy. I have been a member since 2002 and seen many attempts fail in the past to resolve the persisting parking issue at our branch and in that context the management's policy has been incredibly successful. Whatever subscription you choose be careful what you are getting yourself into and know how to get yourself out of. David Lloyd seems to still have a standard policy whereby you need to give them 3 months notice before wishing to cancel a membership. I was burnt badly during a period of extreme stress where I was not even going to gym and my membership (which was pre-paid 12 months ahead) concluded. A month later they mailed me saying my account is in arrears and I still need to pay them at least three months going forward. They referred me to an online terms of conditions PDF which I apparently signed, which of course I cannot find a copy of in my email. Nothing like UK corporate greed in a time when cost of living is sky-rocketing. Lovely. Good job David Lloyd. read more

David Lloyd is a very elite chain of gyms. The Finchley branch is no exception. Coming to this club is rather like working, playing and eating at a country club more than a fitness centre. This club has two pools, cardio equipment, classes, a cafe, a library room, large shower and locker rooms, badminton, tennis and events like French night. You can literally hang out at David Lloyd all day doing something, They even have free Internet access on the gym's computers and a piano in the cafe to tinker around on. The membership fees are mid-range (60 odd pounds a month) but they make you commit to a year before you can sign up. This is a beautiful club, really top notch with good people who respect others as it's members. You are treated politely by members and staff at all times. On another note the circuit training "machines" and vibrating exercise equipment are great fun. David Lloyd is on a key recognition system that keeps track of what you have done and there are always trainers around to give you a free first session to get acquainted with the equipment and track your progress/wieght. Everything in this club is modern and clean. The only drawbacks ( why I didn't give a five star rating) is the length of DL's contract and the lack of a nearby tube. If you can commit to a year and have the time/car to travel here, David Lloyd is a truly great club. read more

Appalling customer service. I signed up for a membership advertised as a 3-month "summer membership" so my kids would have a place to swim over the summer. I was informed the date that my membership would be ending. The day after my membership was meant to expire they charged my debit card for the next month's membership dues with no notice or warning. It was next to impossible to reach anyone by phone or email, and they refuse to refund the charges. It's manipulative and unethical to treat customers this way. Additionally, during our "summer membership", the outdoor pool was closed to kids (no lifeguard on duty) anytime the temperature wasn't above a certain threshold. It's England - so there were a lot of days that didn't meet the criteria and we couldn't even use the club for the intended purpose that we joined for. read more

I fell in love with this place the first time I saw it. This place is like a country club in the heart of Finchley. When you are at the club you feel like you could be well outside of the hustle and bustle of London. With two swimming pools (one indoor and one outdoor) I am spoilt for choice. I go outside in the summer and inside in the winter although the outdoor pool is heated so you could use it in the winter comfortably. The gym is very well equipped. With the latest machines including the now popular free motion for functional training. Most of the machines use a key, which you are issued with when you join. Each time you exercise you put in the key and your sessions are all recorded precisely as you did it. All your weights, reps, speeds, calories etc are stored on the computer. You simply put in the key and all your data and progress can be viewed. You can also play badminton here, which is included in the gym membership. There are many tennis courts but you must be a 'tennis' member to use them. The restaurant serves really tasty dishes at reasonable prices. Even the sandwiches, you can tell a chef instead of a sandwich bar prepares them. As a fitness facility and place to get away from it all, for me David Lloyd Finchley has simply got it all. read more

I was a member for years before going to work abroad, apart from the occasional thefts and the rather boistrous behaviour of some of the over-testosteroned young men in the locker rooms it was OK, nothing special though, often a bit dirty I thought. I tried to rejoin, having returned to the UK to add myself to my wife's membership, who had remained a member for over 15 years. I work for a large corporate, with whom DL has a corprate arrangement. I was quoted over the phone an increase from £113 for the wife alone to £161.50 for the two of us and on this basis I made an appointment to sign up. When I got there the guy with whom I spoke was not there. After 10 minutes waiting a woman emerged and said "It's £98 each" I said, "that's not what I was quoted, can we speak to the young man who quoted me?" "No", she said, "I'm his boss anyway, the price is the price" I tried to open my mouth again and she jumped in with "Stop speaking while I finish my sentences".At this point I walked out. So she'd kept me waiting, she either lied about the rate or at the very least made no attempt to find out what her colleague had offered then she insulted me!. I'd say keep well clear, the low quality of staff lessens an already very mediocre experience. read more

Thats the problem, dl does not try. If I was you join DL bushey or hatfield. so much better. The whole place needs fixing, too many tennis coaches, torn netting and curtains, rude staff and damaged equipment in the gym. Shame it is the only place to play indoor tennis locally and the management need to improve the club read more

Yup , great club if you dont mind the rain coming through on you on the indoor courts, the smelly showers and constantly being tapped for cash to play tennis even though you already pay a premium to play. read more
