Our kitten suffered cardiac arrest during a routine spay appointment and died the following day. We…read moreare devastated and have serious concerns about the care she received. My 80-year-old mother brought her beloved kitten, Sweetheart, to this veterinary clinic for what should have been a routine spay procedure. According to my mother, Sweetheart was given anesthesia in preparation for surgery, suffered cardiac arrest, and required CPR to be revived. The spay procedure was never performed. Despite this life-threatening event, Sweetheart was discharged home with my elderly mother. My mother was told that Sweetheart was recovering, that she was sufficiently hydrated to get through the weekend, and that she could offer water using a syringe. The explanation my mother received for taking Sweetheart home was that no one would be at the veterinary office over the weekend. That night, Sweetheart cried and suffered repeated seizures approximately every 15 minutes. My mother stayed beside her throughout the night, desperately hoping she would recover. By the following morning, it was clear that Sweetheart was suffering. My mother made the heartbreaking decision to return to the veterinarian and have her euthanized. My questions for this veterinary practice are simple: Why was a kitten who had just suffered cardiac arrest and required CPR considered stable enough to be sent home? Was she evaluated for neurological injury or other complications following resuscitation? Why wasn't she referred to a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital for continued observation and treatment? Why was my 80-year-old mother placed in the position of caring for a critically ill kitten overnight, without professional medical supervision? And what exactly was the additional $80 charge for? I understand that anesthesia carries risks and that unexpected complications can happen even with appropriate veterinary care. However, I believe families deserve transparency, clear communication, and appropriate guidance when a routine procedure becomes a life-threatening emergency. Sweetheart went in for a routine spay and never came home as the healthy, playful kitten my mother knew and loved. Instead, my mother spent a traumatic night watching her beloved kitten suffer before having to make the devastating decision to end her life. We deserve answers about what happened to Sweetheart and why she was discharged following cardiac arrest. No family should have to experience this without a clear understanding of the medical decisions that were made.
