I'm kind of an idiot sometimes. I came upon an alley in downtown Muncie, and saw a mailbox at the entrance of it that was pink and decorated with stickers. The mailbox had "Letters to Dave" written on it. Oh cool, I thought. Public art! I love public art. And how amusing that you can just write and drop off a letter to someone named Dave.
Later, I realized that the mailbox for Dave's letters is sitting in an alley called Dave's Alley. And the Dave of Dave's Alley and Letters to Dave is David Letterman, the comedian and late-night TV host. Because David Letterman's alma mater is Ball State, which is located in Muncie! The dude is revered here in this city. So revered, that he has an entire alley named after him, with his very own mailbox that will receive your letters.
I visited during the daytime, but at night, Dave's Alley has a light sculpture that hangs above and lights up the alley. I've seen photos, and it looks very pretty! Apparently, the light sculpture in Dave's Alley is meant to celebrate the city's manufacturing history, specifically third-shift workers.
Dave's Alley is located on the 200 block of south Walnut Street. You pretty much can't miss it. read more
