For 16 years I've consulted Dave about a wide range of architectural issues, and he has always amazed me on many fronts: * When he steps into a room (even one that he's only visiting socially!), he enters with heightened awareness and takes a moment to soak it all in: the east-west orientation, the amount of natural light streaming in, the objects on display, what the space means to and reflects about the owner--all of it. * Some green architects are so strident about their beliefs that it's almost as if they think humans should suffer and sacrifice in order to be as green as can be. We had the worst experience with Dave. He took liberties in his design, over built the addition, costing us extra money. He also charged us for time designing details of the kitchen when we told him we had a kitchen designer. He just needed to draw the addition. In general, people want their addition to blend with the rest of the architecture their house. Unfortunately, Dave designed our addition with a steep pitch, making the addition look like a church behind our house. He had left out the street elevation (the most important one) on the blueprints so we never saw the street view of the addition compared to the rest of the house. When the contractor erected the trusses and we drove up, it looked ridiculous ! Our neighbor drove by, at that moment, asking if we where building a separate building In the back of the house. Our contractor had to tear down those trusses and order new ones that more similarly matched our existing roof line. This cost us several thousands more and Dave still has not reimbursed us or offered to make it right in any way. It's just been a nightmare, please be aware. read more

Dave is a wonderful and talented architect. He has helped us achieve the home we have always wanted. Listens to our needs and proficient in green/environmental sensitivities and non toxic issues which I face. He has made it so we can live in a space without worrying about such things because our home is bullet proof! He has an eye for details. The spec plans he designs makes life easy for a contractor. Wow. I have been working as a contractor in California since 1982. I have worked with many architects. Dave Deppen stands so far above the lot as an architect it is truly amazing. He has worked in the office of Van Der Ryn, the former State Architect of Gov. Jerry Brown, and the pioneer of solar construction, Macolm Wells. I introduced him to some of my clients and he was so experienced, knowledgable and humble, that they all felt at home. He constantly attends workshops to keep his skills cutting edge and is the most detail oriented designer i have ever worked with. Though he is amazingly organized and thorough, he was very reasonably priced. He has great skill in dealing with municipalities. Our major project together was the Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies at De Anza College, which is now internationally famous. Dave was the lead design architect and project manager.
