On-line enrollment is fairly painless and easy, though you must subscribe to the Amalia service (yet another password to remember!) which manages their online enrollment. My class is okay...not great but it gets the job done. At $90 for 10 sessions, the price is right. The seniors' class in the next section of the pool seems to be having more fun than we are, so I'm guessing that enjoyment of the class depends a lot on the instructor. Customer service when you call their office left me less than impressed. I had a special request to which they said no -- not a problem that the answer is no, but there is a way to say no politely... As far as I know, all of their classes are in French. The pool at Claude-Robillard was recently renovated and is quite lovely. The changerooms aren't the greatest (in particular, no hooks in the showers for towels/toiletries) but the lockers are nice and clean and new.

I think I'm hooked :) I first heard the concept of swing dancing from a friend who said it's really…read morea cool dance to learn. So with that seed planted in my head, it started to sprout. I had been search far and wide for "my dance" and tried cha cha cha, tango, salsa and watched bachata (definitely not my style) and nothing clicked. I was also looking for a dance where there aren't old creepy guys trying to dance with you. I was determined to find "my thing". So I Googled "swing dance Montreal" and they're the first option that comes up. They had a promo for Swing Level 1+2 so I said, "Why not?" and promptly signed up. I convinced a friend to switch over from samba to swing so we both took the 1+2 together. In the first class, we had 30-some people and it didn't matter that I went with my friend because the instructors make you switch partners every few minutes, there were some classes where I might not even have danced with my friend :p but the cool part is that everyone is young (20s-30s) and friendly (no creepy old guys here! yay). Warren and Kim were our instructors and I really enjoyed their easy-going approach to teaching. Watching them dance was like a light bulb turning on and I realized that I've found "my thing" :D It was fun and very accommodating environment for learning because no one is judging you for two left feet. The guided practice on Wednesday was only ok because the guy who was supposed to be coaching seemed more interested in eating his sandwich, drinking his coffee and chatting with people than to actually coach us. After taking the Level 1+2 courses, I still didn't "get" swing so I asked how to get good at swing and the instructors recommended going to the social dances on Friday nights. I had to summon 2 months worth of courage to actually go the first time early this year by myself and guess what? I had a BLAST!!! I'd go every Friday if I get the chance. They don't have lockers so you have to leave your stuff in the coat area. Also bring a bottle of water that is easily distinguishable in dim lighting. PLEASE put on a good antiperspirant or deodorant--nobody likes dancing with a smelly partner :p Don't dress too warm because all that dancing will make you sweat! You don't need a partner, just show up cause there's always enough friendly people to ask you to dance! Entry fee is $10 cash only and there's a beginner intro class at 8:30pm and an intermediate at 8:45pm. IMHO, if you're a beginner, it's better you take the Swing 1 and maybe even Swing 2 to really get into dancing. Try it!

As of October 2020, I've been attending Maxine Grossman's classes since fitness studios and gyms…read morewere allowed to reopen again in June 2020. I hadn't had a regular and challenging workout regime since the beginning of 2019. Boy was my body sore for the first couple of weeks! Since the very first class I've attended, Maxine and the participants have been careful to socially distance and clean equipment. We were even diligent in wearing masks and sanitizing our hands, and Maxine and the other coaches took our temperatures with an infrared thermometer before indoor classes. Maxine kept classes small, with participation capped at 8 people indoors or 15 outside (not that I have ever gone to a class of 15). She gives feedback right away while playing fantastic tunes and varying the exercises weekly-I've never had the same workout! I thank Maxine for helping me get back on the fitness grind and enjoy working out in groups. The support and energy I get from each class I attend keeps me coming back, with my fellow members cheering me and each other on. Fitness places are not the problem during this time-they help lots of people maintain a routine and their mental health, including me. I look forward to attending class again when fitness places are allowed to reopen. Until then, back to exercising at home!

They have really exciting classes that you won't find anywhere else; Animal Flow, Kettlebell Kickboxing, Tall & Toned. My kickboxing skills have improved greatly since I started going to Carline's class and I recently tried Myriam's kickboxing class and left in a puddle of sweat. Total Body is a great crossfit style class if you're looking to condition your muscles and Power Hour is my favourite way to start the weekend. I really can't say enough about Maxine's studio and the trainers that work there!

I organized a birthday party here for my daughter (w/ 10 or so friends) and everyone had FUN! That's what matters. The kids enjoyed the playground area and the laser tag (I enjoyed the latter as well). The activity flow was well-organized and implemented. This was money well spent. I kind of wonder: could a place like this offer the same activities, improve the healthiness and quality of food, increase the price point in response, and survive/thrive? I'd be a customer in that "version" of Cache-A-L'eau for sure ;-)

We attended a birthday party of one of my daughter's friends. First things first: the kiddos had a…read moreblast. The place is huge and there are plenty of fun play areas for the kids. What was lacking was supervision. There is an area for kids 3 and under, but no one was around to ask older kids not to enter. My daughter is not quite 2 years old yet and kept being pushed around by kids over 5 and as old as 10. Older kids do tend to dominate space, which is fine - but they have SO many other areas to play; that it really wasn't necessary that they be there. It would have been more pleasant if there was someone to monitor the areas and kindly remind the older kids that this particular area is for smaller kids only. Secondly, I have a 4-month-old baby as well and was disappointed to find out that they do not have an area or room for breastfeeding. When I asked whether there was a room for breastfeeding I was directed to a single bathroom with a clogged toilet and basically told that this was better than nothing. Perhaps my standards are too high, but I feel as though if you are going to open an children's amusement center you should probably consider that some parents have babies in addition to toddlers or older kids, and that they may need to feed them. It is unacceptable to me to suggest that a mother should feed her child on a toilet. If for no other reason than it being unsanitary.

The studio itself is spacious and adorably decorated with burlesque touches like feather boas, which compensated for the rest of that floor being rather industrial-looking. I never had to share a pole, as I normally do in New York, and I had the option of working on spin or static pole. The instructors I had spoke both English and French; communication was perfect even though I only speak English. I'm sure I will never forget to point my toes again thanks to Zoe drilling that into my head! I also appreciated Payton for teaching a flexibility class that truly felt "all level" and not too advanced for me. Speaking of flexibility, I don't have much of it, so I do prefer the hour and 15 minute classes I have in NYC because I need extra time to thoroughly warm up. The classes at Studio Phenix are an hour, which I'm sure some people might prefer. I felt a great personal connection with both Zoe and Payton, and would definitely go back if I ever find myself in Montreal again.

I like it here very much. Maybe it's the idea of turning this thing that people associate with putting the female body on display for men around, and looking at how incredibly physically challenging and artistic it is, to the point where it becomes a popular competitive sport. Maybe it's that I can be wildly klutzy and awkward and learning a sexy swing is nice, and when I fail at it, is hilarious. Anyway, I'd always wanted to try it. So I went! The studio is clean and bright and overlooks Jean Talon market, and it's covered in these funny and welcoming posters that make you feel like it's totally ok to be a complete awkward beginner at pole dancing and to try it anyway. The owner has a great welcoming energy, she's funny and upbeat and intent on making a non-competitive fun space. The studio is tiny and classes book in advance, so take advantage of the online reservation system. I took a class for beginners and most of the class was not beginners and that was intimidating, but I loved it anyway. We did a whole simple routine by the end of the hour and I was bad at it but it was deeply satisfying anyway. Can't wait to go back.
