From my first appointment with him, I felt heard. He listened to every concern and acknowledged my anxiety throughout my pregnancy, always calming my nerves. I had a couple of ER visits due to nausea, and he made sure to call and check on me and baby afterward each time. I had even scheduled my induction for the day he would be on-call because I wanted him to deliver my baby. However, baby decided to arrive on her own five days early, and he wasn't able to deliver her. Nonetheless, thanks to him, I had an amazingly smooth second pregnancy and delivery. I'm done having kids, and I'm sad I won't get to see him often. I wish he had been my OBGYN for my first pregnancy, but I will continue seeing Dr. Nguyen for my other gynecological needs.

Little did we know how the day would transpire. Long story short, my water ended up breaking early that afternoon and Dr. Nguyen delivered my twins via C-section. Although I had only met Dr. Nguyen that morning, he brought such a good calming presence that I was at ease being in his care. He even made it a point to find and let my mom know after the surgery that the babies and I were just fine. We were lucky enough to see him again 11 days post delivery as he stopped by the NICU to check in on us and the boys. That alone is enough to show the type of doctor and let alone person that he is. I could not recommend him enough and am so thankful he was the OB working that day.

She also continues to require covid-era masks for patients without any apparent willingness to acknowledge the benefits of natural exposure years after the fact. Unfortunately, the issues don't stop there. Her staff is impressively rude, both on the phone and in person. The receptionist called me seven times, three hang-ups (one before 8am) and four brief conversations, just to insist I arrive 20 minutes early. Naturally, the doctor then showed up 15 minutes late. That's 35 minutes of my life gone, which she generously compensated for by spending a whopping eight minutes with me. In that blink-and-you-miss-it visit, she pushed an order for a mammogram. Coincidentally, the imaging center, which I never had any contact with before, has called and texted me 12 times to schedule. At that point, it felt less like healthcare and more like harassment. Makes me wonder about the reciprocity between offices. As if the political commentary wasn't already wildly inappropriate, DURING MY MEDICAL APPOINTMENT, WITH MY FEET LITERALLY IN STIRRUPS, she asked me, A STRANGER, about a current event involving innocent people being slaughtered and sexually, physically, and psychologically tortured while being held hostage. She responded with a dismissive, "Oh well...," clearly signaling disagreement with the radical idea that Jews deserve to live in peace and safety. It was absolutely unhinged. At no point did she or her staff show any awareness, or concern, about how uncomfortable, rushed, and unprofessional the entire experience was. She actively listens to what you have to say and just has so much knowledge that I feel extremely privileged to be under her care. Each time I left her office I got emotional because I was finally being heard! Her office visits have always been pleasant so far not too much of a wait time although even if there was I wouldn't mind, having a knowledgeable provider is always worth the wait and Dr. Cowan is amazing. She always made me felt comfortable, heard, and like we were working together as a team towards options. Dr. Cowan is an amazing doctor but she is also human too with a large patient load like any other provider. I've rotated between a few OB providers for the past few years and was recommended by a family member to see her (which also shows how great she is) and now I recommend her to others myself. She is a provider I brag about all the time because the amount of knowledge she has is amazing! I highly recommend doctor Cowan to others who are interested! Regardless of wait times or not I think the importance of having a well skilled and knowledgeable provider is valuable towards anybody's health.

They then set up a phone appt with me. The PA didn't bother to call me for my phone appt and didn't even cancel it. Just nothing. At my next appt I mentioned my leg pain/severe leg cramps which stopped me from sleeping every single night and the PA told me eat a banana and drink liquid iv. It seemed ridiculous and careless to say that to someone in so much pain. (I had already been doing that and it didn't help at all) My due date was switched about 6 times and the dr called me and said it was my fault because I gave the hospital the wrong due date- 9/11.1 never gave them that date...because it was never my due date. My original dude date was 9/18, which I gave them. The doctor switched it from 9/18 to 9/11, to 8/26, to 8/28, to 9/2 and finally 9/4. I was blamed instead of taking responsibility for switching the date so many times THE NIGHT BEFORE my C-Section was scheduled. While I was at the hospital getting an NST, she told me she'd schedule my due date for 9/11. 5 minutes later I asked what time on 9/11. She said "what's happening on 9/11?" "I said you just moved my due date to 9/11" Prior to my 6 week appt for my c section, I called the front desk THREE times to request to be put on birth control at that appt. The first time I called, the lady rushed me off the phone. The second time I called, a different lady answered. I asked if she knew what kind of birth control l wanted and if it had been ordered yet. She said, "no, do you want an IUD?" I'm not sure why. I mentioned I wanted the depo shot in the first call but she said no one wrote it down or ordered it. The depo shot was then sent to the pharmacy (only a doctor can pick it up) so I called the office to let them know I can't pick it up and I also wanted to confirm that I will receive my birth control at my appt bc l had a feeling i would be brushed off (so I don't have to come back again, but was rushed off the phone again). I texted the dr twice about it who said it's not their fault. No solution, no alternative, nothing. I show up at 12:45 pm to my 6 week post partum/ birth control appt which was at 1 pm. I wasn't seen until 2 pm. You guessed it. The birth control hadn't been ordered and I didn't receive it at my appt. I don't know what the point of this appt was be my C section scar wasn't checked, no questions about PPD were asked, no info was provided on when I can work out again, and no birth control was given. I sat there and was told I could leave when she stated that the office didn't have my birth control in stock. I guess I just can't get on birth control at this place? (Unless I want a pill or IUD) Or they're too busy to care about their patients. They said they'd call and let me know by the end of the day where I could get it. No one ever called. It's been almost 3 months since I gave birth, and no one has followed up with me. I also wanted to note that I was never placed off of work until after I had my baby. No one spoke to me about when I felt like I could stop working. I brought my maternity leave paperwork to the hospital for the dr to sign and asked her twice if she could sign it. She told me to bring it to her office at a later date bc she was too busy. We had to make a trip to her office with 3 day old baby in the car in order for her to sign it. I'll be finding a new doctor instead of inconveniencing this office. I will not be removing this review. I saved all of my text conversations with the lack of response. I also have my paperwork copies with the dates.

Dr. Pham Thomas had been my OB for a while and she was an okay gynecologist, never had any issues with her. I wish I had done some research on her being the "one delivering my baby and doing my c-section!". Anyhow, my pregnancy was progressing well: I had no complications no high blood pressure baby was growing perfectly normal inside and everything was just so beautifully going along but because of my previous pregnancy and experience this doctor insisted that I delivered at 37 weeks which I still don't understand why because baby was fine in there nothing wrong so why the need for that. I kept arguing with Dr Pham that my gestational age was different from my calculations on ovulation tracking and I know when I tested. So at 37 weeks I was in reality 36 weeks and a few days. These little things just annoyed me so much throughout but somehow I ignored them and just went with the flow which I deeply regret now. But I guess nothing can be done about that now. My birth and delivery story was even more of a nightmare and it gives me PTSD everytime I talk about it. I was called in for a scheduled C-section at 7am and Dr Pham very conveniently gets stuck with another lady whose baby decided to be born before mine and she has to make her push. But I cannot argue that right. She comes in the room I'm all prepped up in at 9.30 (2.5 hours late) and I am rolled into the operation room for my C-section. It takes few attempts to make the incision because of scar tissue and instead of a normal she made a T incision God knows what.. I don't even remember that.. All I can say is the rest was all carelessness and almost criminal negligence on her behalf. My uterus was cut open for 5 minutes and the baby was not pulled out yet. Every surgeon and obstetrician knows the baby has to come out immediately once the uterus is cut open. My poor baby swallowed so much fluid in this process of being drowned in there for 5 minutes and couldn't even cry for 3 minutes he was so stunned. They decided to vacuum his head because he wasn't coming out from the stupid doctor. Several attempts into it he finally came out but this left a big red bump and bruise on the back of his head for two months (cephalohematoma). I felt so helpless because obviously I couldn't move from the epidural. Even the doctors and nurses attending there that day witnessed this and it was definitely not "a rockstar" moment. My son had to be transported to the Children's Hospital in Oakland because the place he was born didn't have that level of NICU care. He was admitted there for 2 weeks due to respiratory distress syndrome and failure (all thanks to this nightmare delivery process and nothing existing with him pre birth). I am sharing this story even though it was a little more detailed than I planned because I wanted everyone to know what this Dr did to my son and I rate her a horrible surgeon. Although she might be an ok doctor or OB. She proved that day that she is not cut out for surgery. And she still had the Audacity to say that yes baby was born at 37 weeks although everyone at the Children's hospital stated his lungs were that of a 36 week-er! And I know my dates so no arguing there. VERY SCARY and UNEXPECTED EXPERIENCE in the end with DR PHAM. I don't want to belittle you but what you did was sheer criminal negligence and I still get goosebumps every time I think about my birth story.

It was because of the last experience that I switched to Kaiser when I started working full time. She was my first OBGYN when I was when I was a teenager and I had nothing but neutral experiences with her up until my last appointment. As a young adult, you'd think that you could trust your OB with advice on birth control options but I beg of any young girl to please avoid this woman. Not only was she condescending, she actually laughed at me when I asked her questions about the pill as though I was stupid. It's a pretty traumatizing experience for a young woman to be laughed at by her own doctor when asking questions that should be safe to ask your health provider. I didn't see her, much less another OBGYN for another 4 years because of that and was glad I found my current one at Kaiser who doesn't make me feel bad about myself the way that Dr. Pham-Thomas did. I'm sure she's a fine doctor but she's got a condescending, rude, & elitist demeanor about her because of her profession and truly doesn't seem like a nice individual you could entrust so I'd avoid her if possible if you are a patient at PAMF.

This delivery was more pleasant and my husband was thrilled to cut the cord because our nightmare of an obgyn for our last daughter didn't give him that chance. He supported us in wanting to have a natural birth and made the experience memorable. Dr. Lee's office visits are very short and to the point. If you are looking for a Dr. who will spend a lot of time with you he is not the one, however this means that our wait time in his office was almost non-existent. We got in, saw him, and got out. In my opinion obstetrics is probably the most important field in woman's health. It's taken me over one year and a lot of courage to write this review but I feel like what I went through should be shared so that other women deciding on their OBGYN will not have the same result. BED SIDE MANNER I initially wanted to have Dr. Jeffrey-Starr as my OBGYN because of her rave reviews from my neighbor who had a very positive experience with her after a bad experience with her first child. When I first met with Dr. Starr she confronted me with rude comments like why have you seen so many doctors? What is wrong with you? I had seen many doctors due to my endometriosis, it went undiagnosed initially by Dr. Pham who is also at that practice, but later Dr. Beatty (the only doctor I can recommend at that practice) ordered the necessary tests to be able to diagnose it. Every time I asked her questions about my pregnancy she dismissed me as if I was hyper concerned. I thought maybe I was being irrational, given she's done this a thousand times and I have only been pregnant once. She was always in and out of the room after about 5-10 minutes. She would appear visibly annoyed when I asked if I could facetime my husband for the appointment (as this was during the height of COVID) or if I asked if I could go through my list of questions (i.e., is this normal in pregnancy type Qs?) OFFICE FUNCTIONALITY I saw Dr. Starr once every third appointment. She never responded to a single inquiry I had through the online portal, instead it was her office staff who took anywhere from 3-8 days. Her NP would frequently say "that's a Q for Dr. Starr," in which I would never receive any follow through on whether the Q was relayed to her. I consistently waited in the office for my appointment anywhere between 1-2 hours. This is tough for a pregnant woman who is also working. DIAGNOSIS/CARE Because of our infrequency in communication, I didn't really feel like Dr. Starr was my doctor. My saving grace was a family friend who was an OBGYN. I could call her and ask her about symptoms I was having and she would tell me whether they were concerning or not. When she said they were concerning, I went to the ER and got the necessary blood work done. I did end up getting contractions early on and had some symptoms consistent with liver issues (all of these things went undiagnosed) and didn't seem concerning to Dr. Starr. When I was admitted to the hospital due to high blood pressure, I was there for 7 days. The first 72 hours I was induced, on a high amount of pitocin, on an epidural for 4 days, several cervical exams, a serious of high fevers, and very low over sight from Dr. Starr. I had asked Dr. Starr if we should go through a birth plan together, prior to me going to the hospital and she said no. At the hospital, I saw 5 other OBs at the hospital and there was no consistency of care. Finally, I requested a C section after having a very high fever of 102 and my blood pressure shooting up to the 170s. The C section was performed quickly but there was a lot of bickering on the other side of the curtain (overall it seemed like the care team wasn't functioning well together). In the recovery room, I went into septic shock, the rapid response team was called and was transferred to the ICU where my life was literally being saved. There were probably 20-30 different medical professionals buzzing around me, and I didn't see my baby for 3 days after he was born. AFTER CARE Dr. Starr visited me once when I was in the ICU to take my bandages off. I couldn't get an appointment with her for my 6 week post op apt. A different OB said my scar tissue indicates the surgery wasn't performed skillfully. Overall I would not recommend Dr. Starr and actually feel obligated to warn others because the result of having her as your doctor could be fatal.
