I don't believe the low ratings for this restaurant at all. Yes it is expensive and yes it is a high end fine dining restaurant. We had a server named Allen that Ho was superb. We were treated with respect and hospitality from the moment we entered and gave them our coats. Dinner was superb!! I'm only sorry that we had a! N 8 o'clock curtain which meant we couldn't do the seven course tasting menu. I have eaten here many times over the years and never been disappointed. As a French trained chef myself I couldn't have been happier. We were celebrating my daughters birthday. We tried to see if we could do the 7 course but we're correctly advised they it would be rushed. Instead we did the four course and added a shared first course as well as an add on upgrade of a risotto. We started with cold foie gras terrine which was both delicious and beautifully presented. My daughter had the squash veloute with duck ballotin and crispy egg roll. Then we shared the fluke and fennel dish with grapefruit that again was again gorgeous to look at and refreshingly light. I had a glass of champagne and my daughter had a lemon drop martini which was wonderful. The soup was hot and comforting as well as delicious and just what she wanted on a cold night when we had walked a bit. This was followed by a hot foie gras for me which was incredible. Perfectly cooked and accompanied by a vodka duck reduction done tableside. Melt in your mouth and could have eaten two of them!!! Then she had a duo f lamb chop and lamb loin and I had the venison topped with foie gras. Again beautifully presented and delicious. It was particularly wonderful that Allen truly understood every dish and explained them perfectly. For dessert got the passion fruit vacherin which was nice and dark and cold and melt in your mouth and not too large. My daughter had the Carmel cheesecake and a lovely Meyer lemon meringue tart for her birthday. This was followed by chocolates and mini madeleines. We asked for a box for the Madeleines because by then we were absolutely stuffed. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. If you are looked for a relaxed environment and don't like 2 Michelin started service and food then this is NOT for you. It was also appropriately priced. Much to our surprise we were comped my champagne and a lemon drop as well as the fluke dish.l as well as the meter lemon dessert which was served with a candle and Happy Birthday Jessica written on the plate in Chocolate. I went here with my boyfriend, his brother and his brother's girlfriend. The experience was of decent food, but subpar service. For reference, I'm comparing this to Eleven Madison Park. My boyfriend's brother and his girlfriend have been to several Michelin starred restaurants and they said similar things. The restaurant's atmosphere was nice and the interior was beautiful. Our waiters were generally professional and attentive. But there were some things that were slightly off about the service. None of the waiters introduced themselves which I didn't mind, but the rest of my party noticed. One of the servers started telling us what we would be having throughout the night and told us that we would be starting with steak, which was strange, but I just accepted that this was how Daniel was. We did not have steak first. We had their starters first. The table crumbs were swept to the carpet and someone else cleaned the carpet mid-service which was a little jarring and strange. Something else that was strange was that when members of the party went to use the restroom, we were still served the next dish. The food was good. I really liked the crusted seared scallops because they were smooth and sweet. The Wagyu was tender. The chocolate hazelnut dessert was overly sweet and the apple dessert was the right amount of tart and sweet. They had a fried wonton wrapper like thing with the apple dessert which offered a nice crunch. My boyfriend and his brother got the wine pairing and I thought it was nice that Daniel does not require the whole table to do a wine pairing. The boys liked trying out the wines with each food item. I ordered a cucumber non-alcoholic drink and it was refreshing and really good. However, towards the end of the dinner, my drink was taken away without anyone asking if I was done with it and I was caught off guard so I did not tell them that I was not done with the drink. When the receipt came, they gave us the wrong receipt twice, so thank goodness we checked. The first one had items we did not order and the second one charged less because they did not include wine pairings. I visited Daniel's for my 3rd anniversary dinner with my girlfriend and we were beyond impressed. Every dish was thoughtfully curated and every waiter was knowledgeable on every dish and the ingredients in them. The sommelier helped us chose a wine that suited our palates and complemented our meal. The staff was very thoughtful and were always attentive. The food was spot on with the wine pairing. The wine was really on the mark. There was only 1 wine that I was meh about. The food was delicious and flavorful. Amazing experience! My husband and I did the 7 course tasting and we were there for over 3 hours. The service was amazing. It is great to do the tasting the first time you are there but be prepared to spend around $600 (or more if you drink) The best dishes were the seafood appetizer, sea bass, and wagyu steak. If I were to come back I would probably order the 4 course pre fix if the menu doesn't change much. Overall it was a great experience. Only thing preventing me from giving 5 stars was that I didn't love ever dish presented and it was a lot of money, but it was an amazing experience. read more

What a phenomenal experience. This was my first time at a Michelin Star restaurant and Daniel did not disappoint. It was an entire production- about 3.5 hours from start to finish. I did the four course with wine pairing. For my first course I had the marinated yellow tuna, second course tarbot fish, third course lamb chop and fourth course a Java chocolate dessert. I loved all of my wines except the last, which I asked them to switch out and they did. Service was executed very well. We didn't feel rushed and instead all of the servers explained things well, answered our questions and were very friendly. I loved every dish I had. It was like edible art. Not sure why my review won't show up on Google - how many other negative reviews aren't being posted? This place has lost its touch. My review and expectation is based on the fact they are a two Michelin star restaurant. If any of the food critics came back, they would lose their stars in a heartbeat. First, they had horrendous time management, with multiple parties waiting over 30 minutes (after being advised the table would be ready "right away" and to go "take a walk" - I was also in heels, so what would have been a 30+ minute walk was out of the question...). They clearly have zero experience figuring out how long it takes people to eat (note the reservation system informed everyone the dining limit was 2 hours). Unlike other reviewers, there was no offer to sit at the bar and no apology about the wait until we were midway through our main course (after we informed them that the croutons were stale - see below). Their terrace service is mediocre; it's as if they hired people from a diner down the street who don't know how the restaurant is operated (nothing against diners, it's just not two Michelin star service). No question about whether anyone had food allergies (good thing we didn't have any), and no explanation of what the amuse bouche was when they set it down in front of us. Their wine pairing was an experiment in finding some expensive sounding older wines that didn't pair well with the food. Our own by the class selections fared much better than the official pairing. Finally, the croutons on their salad were stale and their main course was overcooked (see picture - the edges were dry and brown). Daniel was very accommodating with our last minute reservation for party of 4 this weekend. This was my 1st return to NYC since leaving in 2013. It is so magical here from the ambiance to the table service. I very much loved the attentiveness of the staff, nowhere else have I seen a fancy stool provided for handbags. A friend once told me a lady never puts a purse on the floor! There's an abundance of flavor in each carefully crafted plate that was brought out. All my friends loved their choices. Unfortunately for me, I found both my crab app and trout entree too salty. I only took couple bites before sending back my app. It surprised me that they made no comment or offer to make a new one. After then getting the trout with the same salty profile, I took it back to the hotel only to throw it out later. It was a disappointment but not enough to ruin the dinner. We are in New York for my birthday. Have not been here for a few years and we're fortunate to get a reservation. We had a table overlooking the dining room and could see all the action. The room is beautifully decorated and warrants dressing up. I am not sure why they lost one michelin star. Everything was perfect. Presentations were complex but not overdone. It was difficult to choose because everything sounded wonderful. I had been to a seminar in Charleston in 2017 and heard Daniel and some of his chefs speak. One chef isnow the executive chef and we were invited to meet him. A special treat For all that was served, I thought the price moderate. read more

So let me say this - I'm being generous with the four stars (I'll get into that soon). We went to Daniel for our four year anniversary and it was nice that everything was socially distanced. We opted to eat inside instead of the cabanas they had outside because it was cold but it seems like the cabanas are very cute and spacious. We got wine and ordered appetizers - which were sooooo good. This made us super excited for the main so we ordered the steak for two. Here's where things took a turn- the steak was really tough to cut through and we actually had to send it back. We opted for the two fish dishes instead, which were good but nothing mind blowing. In my reviews, I rarely, use the word "perfect". But if ever there was a restaurant to describe as perfect, Daniel would be it. Magnificent food, artfully presented, graciously served in a most beautiful setting is what you can expect. My wife and I will never forget our 25th wedding anniversary dinner for two here. But it's what happened to us that evening that will tell you why Daniel is at the pinnacle of the restaurant world: I had made a reservation a month earlier. When we arrived, I learned that the reservation I made was for the casual bar/grill/side room where people dressed casually and you were separated from the main dining room. Disappointed, I told the hostess that I had made this mistake and that it was a very special occasion for us, but was told the restaurant was fully booked. So we said ok and decided to make the most of it. About five minutes later, the manager came over to us and said "I understand it's your 25th anniversary. Please come with me, Mr and Mrs P, your table inside is waiting..." We we brought to a table where we were warmly greeted by at least 4 wait staff, who already knew our names and made us feel so welcome and special. The soup to nuts meal was spectacular, and ended with a surprise cake made for us, with a personalized message of congratulations on our 25th. Although we may never have the opportunity to return to Daniel, my wife and I will never forget this magical evening for as long as we live. Thank you Daniel. read more

I've always wanted to try Daniel and fortunately I can finally say I have thanks to my boyfriend who took my here for our anniversary dinner! Overall I can say that this exceeded our expectations! The ambience was beautiful. It was definitely upscale and formal so dress up for the occasion. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. We were greeted right away and seated. The bread is amazing! So warm and fresh and definitely met expectations of what bread should be in a two Michelin star restaurant. We ordered from the pre fix indoor dining menu. My boyfriend ordered the snails and I had the scallops ceviche style. Both were very flavorful. The snails had a great garlic parley flavor to compliment it, and the scallops were fresh and light. For entrees I ordered the duck a l'orange which I have always wanted to try and it did not disappoint! The duck was perfectly cooked and moist. My boyfriend ordered the lamb chops and the addition of the pistachios really elevated it. For desserts we ordered the vacherin (kiwi ice cream and meringue) and the noisette (hazelnut cream chocolate cake) and both were delicious. The Vacherin had the right amount of tartness to it and the noisette had so many different textures without being overly sweet. The wine we had that was recommended by the sommelier was also a perfect pairing to our dishes. The staff also brought our a complimentary dessert for our anniversary and really went above and beyond to make us enjoy our night. WHAT a birthday dinner! Such a nice night made even better by the staff and cozy setup they have here at Restaurant Daniel! We ate outside and it was a little cold out (probably 40 degrees) and they have these personal setups that are enclosed partially with wonderful heaters that were so warm one of my friends actually asked to turn it off. I had the venison (deer) dish that was amazing. The striped bass crudo was awesome as well with super fresh fish and a neat bite with a fruity/crisp makeup. As a Board certified Chad, I am constantly on the prowl for restaurants to impress my many lady friends from The League. I can safely say that Daniel serves my needs perfectly. The culinary artistry and upscale ambience build my dates' expectations before they experience crushing disappointment when we return home. I recently experienced Daniel with several platonic friends who also happen to use Instagram. If the "#buythedip" bumper sticker on the back of my 2001 Mercedes C-Class (with sunroof) wasn't a sufficient indication, then my compatriots' constant selfie-snapping clearly conveyed that we never previously had a Michelin-starred dining experience. Yet, despite the fact that we would be more at home in the dumpster behind the restaurant, the dining room staff seemingly went out of its way to make the evening memorable. The staff was knowledgeable, friendly and appeared more than happy to embrace our lack of sophistication rather than shun it. Though formal enough to feel like a special occasion, the evening never crossed into gaudy or pretentious territory. Service, however, should be the cherry on top of a great menu. Fortunately, this is very much the case at Daniel. The night began with a comprehensive selection of wine and cocktails. In consideration of ongoing geopolitical turmoil in Eastern Europe, I opted for a mixed drink called The Dictator. I have no idea what was in it, but it clearly resonated with some deep-seated totalitarian sensibility within me, so I had several. Needless to say, it was delicious. My group had a seven-course tasting menu, though it is possible to experience Daniel via a four course prix fixe. Between the courses themselves and the various amuse-bouches and breads served between courses, there was not a single weak link in the experience. And the food simply kept coming; I was taken aback by how many different things we had the opportunity to try. The fois grois and venison were particular standouts that I keep thinking about, but the entire menu was intelligently conceptualized with a great balance of rich vs light, bold vs subtle and classic vs creative. Before dining at Daniel, I needed to lay down moves on potential business associates and League dates at Applebee's in Times Square. While romantic, I think Applebee's lacks a certain je ne sais quoi that makes it a suitable location to close deals, both commercial and otherwise. I don't think I'll have this problem anymore. We did the 7 course tasting menu which ended up taking almost 4 hours in total. The food for the most part was very good with the stand outs being the wagyu steak and the crayfish and the oyster salad being my least favorite of the night. The bread and butter were both amazing. The wine pairing was quite good, they poured very generously and we each had a few glasses left over that we were unable to finish. This was very pricey and quite a bit of food and drink, next time I would be more interested in doing the smaller 4 course menu. read more

This restaurant was fantastic. It is absolutely beautiful on the inside. It is very formal with a dress code, men have to wear jackets, etc. I personally liked this and felt it made it feel more special inside. All of the food was wonderful. The wait staff was a little uptight but nothing too bad. We had reservations here before a broadway show at The Lincoln Center. Make sure to plan in advance to get reservations. I noticed that this restaurant was #25 on the list of the top restaurants in the world and I agree that it deserves to be on this list. After complaining to a Yelp friend that his one word Yelp review of "sigh..." was unclear, he explained that it was all he had to say about this wonderful place. After experiencing their tasting menu, I now clearly understand his review. Wow. MICHELIN: Daniel was NOT one of the four restaurants chosen as 3-Star restaurant in 2009 Michelin Guide NYC. I do not live in NYC, so I have not been to those four restaurants out ranking Daniel, but those places must be REALLY good. PRICE: $175/person for the 6-course tasting menu. Expensive or cheap? Well, depends on the point of view. If you take a global perspective, that is cheap. When comparing other top gourmet cities like Paris and Tokyo, you cannot get this kind of experience for $175 at those cities. Well, you can blame weak dollar for that. SERVICE: Wow. They are really on. Staff on the floor knows their roles and operates with precision. ONE WORLD: Paris, NYC, Tokyo - three cities with very different history and culture. Cultural food at these three cities are quite different. Yet, when it comes to top level gourmet, especially with French influenced restaurants, there is quite a bit of commonality. No question that worlds top chefs communicate among each other and study each others food. CONCLUSION: Definitely need to go back to this place! I visited this wonderful restaurant when they reopened their indoors. The inside was beautiful and well thought out. They really did a good job with renovations. For dinner, I experienced the 7 course meal menu and it was very a memorable one. Each dish had such wonderful notes of spices and texture that was perfectly put together. It was a tough decision trying to figure out which Michelin restaurant to dine at during my visit to NYC! I chose Daniel due to the captivating pictures on yelp and the 5 star reviews! A few things to know upon coming here: - reservations begin 2 months in advance - there's 2 dining rooms (lounge and main room) - main room requires men to wear suit jacket, lounge doesn't ENVIRONMENT: As we walked in through the revolving doors, we were greeted by the staff and was quickly directed to our table. From sitting down to leaving the restaurant, they paid attention to every little detail! I brought my bag and they brought a velvet stool just to put my bag on. After each bread we ate, they would come to scrape off all the crumbs. When I needed to use the restroom, they walked me towards the stairs instead of just pointing/telling me where to go. The staff was absolutely magnificent. They offered amazing recommendations and definitely knew the menu inside-out. FOOD: We did the four course prix fix, which was $151. The presentation of each plate was clean and each component in each dish complemented each other well. -SERIOLE: The presentation of this dish was rather intriguing. I love beets and I didn't know how amazing it tasted with hamachi! -PIGEONNEAU: I might have liked this dish more than my main one actually. I loved the crunchy exterior of the squab. -Can't remember the name for the last dish, but it was lamb. I'm glad that the lamb wasn't too gamey, but I thought this dish was just okay. Since I came for my birthday, they offered a birthday dessert on top of my dessert course in the prix fix! The dessert that I ordered was their version of a tiramisu. Instead of using espresso, they used more lighter flavors such as cinnamon. This was definitely one of my favorite tiramisu!! If I recall correctly, there are apple bits in here as well. I highly recommend this dessert if it is available on the menu! OVERALL: I was afraid that we weren't going to be full off of the prix fix menu, but I was very very wrong. They brought out so many additional little plates for us that by dessert, I could barely finish it. I'm still thinking about their tiramisu dessert that they have. Excellent service. Delicious food. Surprise offerings throughout. I believe Daniel has earned its Michelin Stars! The S.O. & I both selected a Prix Fixe menu of 4 items. Normally, that's chefs pick but here, it's you pick. 1 item from each column of the menu then dessert. Just take a look at the attached photos for our picks. I was especially impressed by the table side foie gras preparation. Granted, from where we were sitting, it ended up not being next to OUR table. But had a good view. At the end of our meal, we were delivered our customized menu to remember the night by and a canele for the road (in a cute little box). Now give your partner a heads up that will happen because if they are anything like me... well there was that brief moment of confusion then disappointment when the box which looked a lot like a ring box is presented by our server. This has been a long overdue review. I'm looking at photos on my phone and saw some from Daniel and it felt like we owe them a review with the amazing experience that my boyfriend and I had here. I don't remember the name of the staff but everyone was nice and approachable. I surprised my boyfriend for his birthday, we are both vegetarians and it took me a while to find a good fine dinning restaurant that offers vegetarian pre fix course/wine pairing. With that said, we ended up doing the 7-course wine pairing. It cost about $1200 with tax and tip, and I have to say, you get what you pay for!!! Our dinner lasted for over 4 hrs, and after that, they gave us a personal menu of what we had with the list of all the wines we had. I will most certainly go back here!!! read more

Had dinner last night at Daniel for the first time in a few years. Was quite impressed with their three-course price fixed menu and outdoor set up. Living just a handful of blocks away, returning this weekend was a reminder about how lucky we are to live so close to such a wonderful restaurant. also need to give major credit to the service/waitstaff for being so on it despite the unusual circumstances of eating fine dining outdoors. Major kudos to the sommelier who also recommended one of my new favorite bottles of wine. read more
