This is an archival library/museum, so if you're looking for something particular, let them know…read moreand they can pull things out for you. The place is kind of small so they can't possibly leave everything out. There are a few basic items that are always on display though. They also work hand-in-hand with the main University library so they can direct you to literature there or on-line as well. There are a couple of librarians/historians on-site, but it's always best to call ahead to make sure they are in the building. They don't mind meeting you either, just give them a heads up if you can. I was recently there and mentioned that my grandmother (92 years old) used to make the sheets for the beds in the burn unit. They had a miniature replica of those beds and a write-up about them (see pictures). The archivist mentioned that they would love to take an oral account so I have some homework in getting the two of them together so this can be recorded soon. Many items have been donated through the years by previous doctors and their families. When you look through these items, you really have to step back in awe at the advancements we have made in science on the shoulders of some pretty innovative people before us. I feel fortunate that we still have this resource available to us. Oh yea, they have a historical photo of this location at the corner of Bee and Ashley and this building was part of that original structure. It's in a glass case in the middle of the room, or ask to see it if not.

I was looking forward to visiting the Waring Historical Library during my trip to Charleston. I've…read morenever been there and I enjoy finding new things to do. Google says it opens at 8:30 am, but luckily I checked their website and they don't open until 10 am. After finding a parking spot a couple of streets away, I walked over and made it right at 10. I rang the doorbell as the door was locked. About a minute later, I saw someone coming from the other side of the building and leaving. Not sure if they work there or not, but it was a little odd. I waited for 15 minutes in front of the library. I rang the doorbell a second time and tried their phone number, but no one answered the door or picked up the phone. All the lights were off inside and I couldn't see anyone working there. I eventually left as it's getting very hot outside and sitting and waiting for a place that may or may not open in the heat isn't really what I want to do on my vacation. It's a gorgeous building from what I saw on the outside though. If they're unable to open on time for whatever reason or if they step away, they may want to put up some sort of sign that says when they are expected back.
