I came by here in the bus when I first arrived in Christchurch not knowing what this was all about. And then I walked past as I'm leaving Christchurch, knowing much more and still absolutely unsure how this is a thing.
After the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, there were a lot of empty lots where buildings were destroyed. An organization called Gap Filler was created to find creative and joyful and fun ways to put those spaces to use. One of them is here, the Dance-O-Mat.
A sprung dancing floor is surrounded by speakers that are powered by a laundromat washing machine. You may get excited for dancing by turning on the lighting and sound systems when you play a song on the Dance-O-Mat. Because who wouldn't?
