Hibachi chicken wasn't anything wow either. Food came out too slow. People who came in after us and ordered after us still got all their food before us. We visited Dan Zai for dinner twice in the past 5 months, and both times the food and drinks were spectacular from start to finish. We had the bubble teas, which is a specialty of theirs. They are sweet and the bubbles (the popping bubbles " are filled with a sweet jelly. They are not for everyone, but if you like a tropical tasting sweet tea drink, these are really interesting. The kids loved them. We had passion fruit, grapefruit and mango. I liked the grapefruit because it was slightly less sweet. For an appetizer, we had a couple of different sushi rolls. The crazy spicy tuna roll was really great, with a lightly fried topping. Vero tasty. The spicy pepper tuna roll was also excellent. All of the sushi grade fish at Dan Zai was fresh and tasty. I had a Poke bowl as my entree, with shrimp tempura as the protein. It was very tasty with a mix of greens, white rice, edimame, red onion, corn, and a delicious sauce. So good I had both times. My kids enjoyed various ramen bowls, and they looked delicious. Super fresh ingredients. We also had the chicken hibachi (which is not made in front of you but in the kitchen). This was also very well prepared with tasty noodles and veggies and dipping sauces. For dessert the fried ice cream is the very best we have ever had. Ever. Really. So good! They are large, too - two portions was enough for my family of six. Don't let the strip mall location fool you - the inside of the restaurant is spacious and very nice to be in. Came in here last weekend and I was encouraged to see that there were so many people with the restaurant's recent grand opening. Overall I had an okay experience but these are just some notes that I made: - We waited about 20-30 minutes for our table but while we were waiting, there were clearly some empty tables toward the back when we arrived so I found it odd that we still had to wait so long to be seated, and without any explanation. - The wait staff were all very kind and I appreciated that the management came around personally to check on how we were doing. - The restaurant has a slightly more upscale kind of feel (aside from the plastic menus) which is also reflected in the prices. - The Taiwanese style beef noodle soup was too sweet for my taste and did not really remind me of Taiwan at all. I was expecting more of a savory broth. The noodles were too soft in my opinion and I would have preferred a different type of noodle than the one they had. - Soup dumplings looked good but were inconsistent since some had broth and some didn't. The spoons they gave us were also smaller than the traditional soup spoons so I was worried that my soup would spill out all over the plate instead. - My friend got the tonkotsu ramen, which has a creamy broth that didn't feel too heavy or greasy. The soft boiled egg was under done and very runny. Overall the taste was fine, but this would not be my first choice to satisfy a ramen craving. Overall I think there is room for improvement. The menu has a lot of different choices and covers a wide variety of Asian cuisine, but perhaps lacks in some of the taste and authenticity. Came here with my mother for a late lunch since it's just around the corner from our house. They have a very diverse menu with a little bit of everything, from ramen, to sushi, to even pork bowls and dumplings. I ordered two salmon rolls with miso soup and a salmon tartar appetizer to share with my mom. While my mother ordered the Hawaiian Poke Bowl. The appetizer was so fresh and delicious, I only wished there was pita chips to use but that's just a personal preference. The soup was an average miso soup, nothing to rave about. However, my sushi was amazing and was very fresh and really reasonable! Only $5 for a roll which contained six pieces. The only downside to this meal was my Thai Tea with Tapioca. It just didn't taste right, and that was quite disappointing. But the final this we got was a shared Shaved Ice and it was huge! You got to chose from seasonal fruit toppings or a traditional styled with the choice of red bean or green tea. I wasn't sure which to try and our waitress said she could make it with a little of everything, which was so kind of her and it tasted so fresh and light. Just the right amount of sweetness. A truly great summery dessert! The staff is very kind and considerate and very helpful when asking questions about the menu. Parking was easy and there's plenty of parking available, and they also take reservations. So overall a great experience! Definitely will come back in the future for some ramen! read more

Let me preface this review by saying that my 3-star rating is based on food alone and that while I don't think the food is that great, there are still good reasons to come here. I came here on a Saturday night at 7pm and waited 30 minutes to be seated. I suspected based on the variety of Asian food on the takeout menu that this could be a restaurant that is a jack of all trades but master of none. There's ramen, sushi, poke, noodle soups, dim sum items, bubble tea, and dessert. We ordered an eel bowl, Taiwanese-style beef noodle soup, the Hawaiian poke bowl, Tonkotsu ramen, and soup dumplings to share. 1) The soup dumplings were inconsistent - some of them did not have any soup at all but none of them were that soupy. The meat filling was okay but not particularly memorable. Soup dumplings are very difficult to do well, so I'm not surprised that a place that is trying to do so much is unable to produce good quality soup dumplings. I'm sorry to say that I think Trader Joe's soup dumplings might be better. If you want authentic soup dumplings, you're better off with Tasty Moment or Shanghai dumpling. 2) The poke bowl was good. I liked it - the ingredients were fresh and the rice was nicely seasoned 3) The ramen is better than Rai Rai, which if you love ramen noodles is considered to be the lower tier of ramen noodle shops in Central NJ. The broth was light, not overly salty, and creamy. The noodles, however, were reminiscent of instant ramen noodles (chicken flavor) that my dad would make for us when we had nothing to eat in the house. Fine but again not authentic. But I'm willing to try it again. 4) The Taiwanese-style beef noodle soup was not really what I consider to be proper Taiwanese beef noodle soup. The beef was good and tastes similar to a beef my mom makes. The broth was too sweet and tasted like it didn't have enough star anise in it. I also didn't love the noodles - they were closer to spaghetti than Chinese noodles. 5) The eel bowl was very disappointing, especially since the eel quality was pretty good. It was very salty and over-sauced. Specifically over soy-sauced. 6) The décor was clean and modern with touches of Taiwan throughout. The place is BYO and has a sushi bar, so it's a nice place to meet with friends. The service was good as well. 7) The menu looked like it was printed and bound at Staples, like a paper that you bind for a high school English assignment. Perhaps the restaurant has proper menus printed but they haven't arrived yet? 8) I've never had Dan Zai, the Tainan comfort dish that the restaurant is named for so I would be willing to return to try that dish. As a Taiwanese-American from the area, I appreciate the effort to bring Taiwanese cuisine to an area of Jersey that lacks that representation. Central Jersey is an area that abounds with a lot of authentic tasting Asian food, so I can't help but feel disappointed that to me the food tastes doctored to suit a westernized palate. I respect that but I hope that Dan Zai can improve, succeed, and share the true deliciousness of Taiwanese food. read more

Came here for dinner and the service was very good! We ordered the salt and pepper chicken, scallion pancake with duck, hibachi, and sushi. The salt and pepper chicken had a good crunch but I didn't really taste any flavor - I wish it had more spices to it. The scallion pancake with duck was ok - I think I would have enjoyed it better with the regular bao bun. The main dishes - sushi and hibachi were spot on. Their hibachi only comes with rice OR noodles though, not both like how other hibachi places are. The steak in the hibachi was good and I thought the sauce was really good too. Definitely will be coming back to try the other dishes since they have a fairly extensive menu! read more

We stopped by Dan Zai today during part of their "Soft opening", having been eagerly staring at the "Coming Soon" sign in the window. The wait was well worthwhile and we will absolutely be coming back! We started with the shrimp dumplings and a godzilla roll. The dumplings were hot and delicious, and the sushi was some of the freshest I've had in the area. Very excellent start! They also brought over what I can only describe as tempura salt and pepper chicken: excellent flavor, perfectly cooked, and really tasty! I then had the Taiwanese marinated pork noodle soup (n1 on the menu) while my wife opted for the vegetable Ramen in spicy miso broth. Both were exceptional: really loved the way the half hard boiled egg soaked up the flavor of the broth. The service is, as one would expect from a new place, exemplary - everyone is incredibly polite and attentive. We received a visit from the owners, Joe and Annie, who were likewise very polite and happy to chat for a few minutes. Annie was able to tell us a bit about the food as much of what we ordered was from her home country (she is from Taiwan). The decor is lovely - while likely not authentic, it has a nice comfortable feel. With plates in the 4-12 dollar range primarily, my wife and I spent about 40 dollars on dinner for two with all we could eat (worth mention: no liquor license so it is BYOB) which is VERY reasonable for the amount we'd eaten. We will definitely be back: I can't wait to try their selection of bao and other assorted dim sum. Grand Opening is on Sunday March 3 - they will have dragon dancers and some other fun stuff going on at 11: highly recommend stopping in if you can! read more

This place is great for take out. The quality of the food is 5 star. I would love to provide 4.5 stars because they are so busy and to wait 5 extra minutes after you have your take out for extra sauce is excessive. By the time the food got home it was Luke warm. We have order a few times from here and will continue. I have had positive to great experiences here but the young person at the counter had trouble balancing needs of customers in front of them vs the phone ringing. Visited for my first time today with my girlfriends, we were seated down right away. It took forever though for a server to ask us if we were ready to place our order. I ordered shrimp shumai, spicy Kani roll and the Korean kimchi ramen. The shrimp shumai was so delicious and I loved the dipping sauce it came with so tasty. When my ramen came I was so surprised at the portion size it was huge. I got the vegetable broth and I must say I didn't enjoy it that much it was unfortunate. I had to put soy sauce to give it a better taste but that still didn't help. I did enjoy the noodles and seafood, kimchi and egg it was pretty yummy. Visited this place on a week night with a couple of friends. We weren't that hungry so we tried mostly the appetizers while one person had the entree. We ordered the wonton soup, baos (beef,pork, and duck), pan fried dumplings and a miso ramen. The appetizers were good except for the pork baos. The pork slice was very thin and it felt like I was eating buns with hoisin sauce. The ramen was an okay and it also had the thin slices of pork too. But I do have to give this place a thumbs up for the decor. It's very modern and clean. The staff members are very friendly speaking both English and Chinese ( don't know it's if Cantonese or Mandarin). I believe the owner or the manager was walking around and asking everyone. Just checked out Dan Zai, which had their soft opening a few days ago. Not everything was available yet, but what they did have available was nothing short of incredible. We started with beverages, including complimentary water and tea, followed up with bubble tea. We tried the passion fruit (with popping bubbles) and mango (with pearls). Both were delish, and I'm guessing were naturally flavored (the mango one had chunks of mango in it). Some of the best fruit tea I've had. For appetizers we had beef bao buns, which came with a peanut sauce and crushed peanuts. They were some of the best I've had, with the buns themselves being the perfect mix of fluffiness and moistness. I'm looking forward to trying them with duck on my next visit (pork is also available). I was also going to try the pork juicy buns, but they had already run out. Given I will drive hours for a good juicy bun/xiao long bao, I have high hopes. For entrees, we had a pork tonkastu ramen and a tempura pork rice bowl. The ramen was great, especially the pork itself. Often I find that ramen places focus of the flavor of the broth and ignore the flavor of the protein, but the pork in my soup was tender and incredibly flavorful. The rice bowl as equally good, and a bit of a surprise, as I was just expecting some sliced pork on a bed of white rice. Instead, the pork and rice arrived in a small crock, mixed with caramelized onions and scallions and tossed with an egg. It ended up as more of a fresh fried rice dish, topped with thin strips of tempura pork. It was one of the best things we had, and I'm already planning to go back and try the tempura shrimp version. Overall, it was a great visit and a fantastic meal. We had a brief chat with the owner, who needlessly apologized for the lack of juicy buns and explained that it will take time to have everything available, as she wants to have everything on the menu made in house from scratch and be authentic to her Taiwanese origins. That is exactly the kind of thing I wanted to hear. read more

My wife and I stopped by here to try the sushi. We started with the veggie spring rolls, which were very good, especially with the dipping sauce (which I think is duck sauce). Our main course were three rolls - spicy tuna, tuna avocado and soft shell crab tempura. Three rolls were just the right amount to fill us up. Each roll was cut into 6 pieces. Wow! Wow! Wow! Yummm!!! These were the only words I used while enjoying my ramen. Their creamy pork marrow base, with delicious pork and buttery noodles created the perfect meal. The sushi was super fresh...just perfect! The staff were so amazingly friendly, very inviting...loved it!!! I don't think I can ever have package ramen ever again, after eating here. I've been very wary about outdoor dining since COVID, but I am so glad that Dan Zai covered all their bases without skimping on their menu and without totally sacrificing guest comfort and customer service! My family originally ordered takeout but decided to eat in instead. The staff gave us no problems and was able to transition our online takeout order to a dine-in seamlessly. We were seated and greeted immediately, and we really loved the addition of fans above every table - the sweltering heat of summer has been the negative of all the outdoor dining experiences I've had so far, and the fans really helped! I can imagine that it's a relief for employees too, as I've heard so many horror stories from my server friends who have been working nonstop in 90 degree heat. The quality of the food is consistent and tasty, and presentation was beautiful. Our server was attentive (I wish I caught her name, she was amazing and so nice). Great place! They have outside seating that is set up very nicely and they give hand wipes. We've come here twice and the food has been spectacular! We ordered ramen the first time and the second time we asked for fried dumplings and a ramen to share. We love the curry ramen and asked for more spicy and thicker broth the second time around. Ordered the pork tempura rice bowl ($12) for takeout. Overall solid food for the price: Location/Cleanliness/Decor: 5/5 The restaurant is a bit hidden amidst strip malls galore. So a bit confusing to find if you make a wrong turn and have to re-track around Route 22, but otherwise plaza signage outside pointed out the restaurant location well and there is plenty of parking in the large shared parking lot. Restaurant staff socially distanced well. A bottle of hand sanitizer was available for customer use at the check-out register. Take-out orders were all individually lined up on a table for easy grab and go. Food was packaged nicely inside the bag and staff had provided packaged disposable chopsticks and packaged disposable forks. No spills or leaks. Food: 4/5 The pork tempura was well-battered and retained its crispiness well. I would have liked a little bit more seasoning/salt on it though, since it was a little bland. The rice bowl also came with egg, sauteed onions, and scallions in a sort of deconstructed omelette. The egg draped the sticky rice like a blanket and was deliciously fluffy. The onions and scallions soaked up the tsuyu sauce and were very flavorful. Service: 5/5 The restaurant staff were very friendly. My order took a little longer to come out than estimated and they provided me with a free lychee tea on the house, which was sweet of them and also tasted delicious. It came with popping boba, which made it super fun to drink, and it was the perfect antidote for the hot, humid evening. Overall a solid takeout option during this pandemic time. Grew up here, and I'm surprised to see a much more authentic Asian place finally open. I've heard a lot of great recommendations about this restaurant from the Warren Community, so I called on New Year's to see if they could accommodate a last minute lunch reservation, and they easily fit us in. But it was actually very packed when we arrived, so I'm grateful they were able to seat us! Decor is cute, and service is warm and friendly. But either the manager was just double checking to make sure all the tables were being served, or tables don't have designated servers, because we had some confusion placing our food/drink orders and had a few people ask what our orders were several times. My dad got the udon shrimp tempura, my mom got the Hawaiian poke bowl, I got the beef teriyaki w/ lettuce base bowl, and my boyfriend got the beef noodles. Tempura was great - we really appreciated that they put the tempura on the side rather than in the udon so it remained crispy. The Hawaiian poke bowl is understandably the most popular - most bang for your buck, healthy choice, and flavorful! However, my boyfriend found his noodles underwhelming in that it was fairly standard, nothing exceptional, and also extremely sparing on the meat (despite being $14). I also found that the beef teriyaki bowl was not your standard teriyaki, but rather thin slices of beef (seems like the same as they use for the noodle bowls). I likely wouldn't order it again. Despite those minor notes, my parents, most importantly, do enjoy the food here, and I'll be gladly taking them out here again in the future! read more
