Absolutely LOVED the bao sandwiches. My friend and I got an order of the pork and duck bao. Mmmm tastes so good! Just the right amount of meat and sauce. Buns were so soft! We went here for the first time to celebrate my mom's birthday. Service was fast and everything we got was delicious: Pork bao, shumai, fried udon noodles, Taiwanese style minced pork noodle soup, Hawaiian combo poke bowl, spicy yellowtail sushi roll, shrimp tempura sushi roll, and lychee bubble tea. Shumai tasted fine but didn't seem to be made fresh on premise. Poke bowl had too much sauce- will have to say "light" next time I return. Considering the high ratings I was pretty disappointed in the food I received. I ordered the chicken bowl and it was more of an onion and egg bowl than chicken. I had to pick out most of the onions and that left me with soggy egg, moist rice and scrapes of chicken thighs. The chicken was really tough, popcorn like and felt fried instead of grilled. The bowl was loaded with white rice and over all lacked flavor. As for the sushi we ordered the angel roll which was a little thin for being a specially roll and the spicy crab didn't taste very fresh. Shrimp was nicely coated and made up for the rest of the meal. Overall l probably won't be back. The food was over priced for what was received. read more

Not sure where all these positive reviews are coming from but if you want an honest opinion, here it is. The food is simply not good. Most of the dishes were poorly executed. Scallion pancake with beef. The pancake actually tasted like cardboard. It was as if the dough was folded in layers and taken out of the oven too quickly. It tasted more like a flour tortilla than a traditional scallion pancake. This was terrible. Pork bun. This thing was bland and had absolutely no flavor. One thin slice of bland pork dressed with hoisin sauce and some cucumbers. Juicy pork dumplings or what are soup dumplings. Probably the saddest batch of soup dumplings you'd ever taste. You can buy better ones in the frozen aisle of an Asian supermarket. The dough was thick. The soup inside was basically hot water. There was no essence of broth whatsoever. Taiwanese beef noodle soup. Again, bland and boring. The broth had no flavor. The beef was not marinated the right way and the noods were mushy. Terrible. This place had gone downhill fast. I bought a container of "premium" Annie's Soup $for 10. Container was half full of 90% broth and a broken up wonton. The spicy tuna roll was not fresh tuna. The amount of dumplings wasn't enough for an app, but priced like an entree The bubble tea was unmixed and the bottom had undissolved powder. I paid 40+ dollars for this hot mess. When I called to complain about the order, they told me to take it up with DoorDash. I will never again order from this rip-off establishment and told them so. I liked Dan Zhai! Their location is not super ideal, as it's a little shopping plaza right off 22. They have plenty of tables though and my friend and I were able to be seated at 7:15pm on a Monday night without a reservation. Our waiter was a sweetheart. He even brought me some kind of mayo variation dipping sauce when I asked for YumYum sauce since they didn't have it. I was obsessed with my Angel Roll. It was the perfect combination of sweet and savory, with just a small kick of spice (coming from someone with a low tolerance for spice). My Salmon Avocado Roll was fresh and yummy. The Vegetable Fried Noodles were good too. The one big hiccup that we had here was that there were so many gnats and flies inside. We spent most of our meal shooing them away. I had a hard time rating this place but ultimately landed on 3 - I would prefer to give 3.5 (mostly because of the bubble tea). We had high hopes for this place especially around the soup dumplings and ramen, and unfortunately were pretty disappointed with both. The service was good, but food was subpar. It tasted like boxed ramen. The charsiu was bland and flavorless and the noodles felt like they were from a box. Will definitely skip this next time. Soup dumplings - disappointing. The soup was fine, but the filling tasted a little funky and the worst part was the vinegar...instead of using black vinegar it was some weird tasty (red) vinegar??? Very strange. I really enjoyed my meals here, I enjoyed my first visit at Dan Zai so much that I decided to come back the next day with other friends. While they focus on Taiwanese cuisine, Dan Zai has such a wide variety of Asian food. There is sushi, ramen, rice bowls, hibachi, and plenty of asian appetizers. I have tried their baos, sushi, ramen and rice bowls and out of everything I highly recommend ordering their sushi. I think the sushi was one of the more fresh I have ever had and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ramen was also very delicious and not too salty. The rice bowls were great as well, but I would choose the sushi over their rice bowls. Overall I had a great experience at Dan Zai and would definitely return. I would give this place 0 stars if possible. Literally not one dish was good that we ordered. Had popcorn chicken that was dry as jerky, obv not freshly made, and also under seasoned. soup dumplings had a weird malt vinegar instead of regular vinegar and barely any broth in the soup dumplings. The Sichuan dumplings came with so much overly seasoned sesame sauce and also no spicy hot oil. Their scallion pancakes were dry as card board. New ramen/ many other types of Asian place, which is still quite busy. We actually came the prior week on a Saturday after 6pm and were quoted a 40min wait time. No thanks. The next week, we passed the restaurant just after 5, and decided to give it another try. It was maybe a quarter full at that time, but by 5:30 it was full again! The ramen is okay. Definitely not fantastic nor authentic. But on par with other ramen places in NJ. Price is okay at $12, but the dish is on the smaller side (I was hungry after). My main complaints are: -wait time: I don't understand how there is a wait here. I won't return until the new restaurant hype dies down -I wish they specialized in one type of food (maybe Taiwanese, since it is TW run). In reference to Taiwan's street vendors carrying baskets of food, like noodles, dimsum and other street food being sold. Having our family Sunday lunch here. We ordered beef ramen on miso soup, Atlantic salmon bowl, pork tempura bowl, shrimp tempura bowl and Hawaiian Combo. The thinly sliced beef is soft, moist and blended well with the miso broth. The tender ramen noodles with beef matched great and taste delicious. The shrimp were battered and fried, not greasy, it's crunchy and delicious. Also, Taiwanese salt and pepper popcorn chicken with basil, scallion pancakes for appetizers. The popcorn chicken is delicious. Pancakes were sliced fried, not greasy. Taste great. Fresh and good quality ingredients they use in their entrees. Serving staff are friendly and courteous. Serving portion is average for the $$ price, mostly from their menu. Stopped by on A Friday night for dinner to try out this new spot that we have been waiting to open after seeing the sign go up and we definitely weren't disappointed! After looking over their vast menu that has so much to choose from we ordered a variety of things to sample... We started with a mango fruit bubble tea and some delicious hot teas served in a large mug... The mango was fresh and delicious and the hot tea was very good as well... For starters we ordered a Shrimp tempura maki roll, Pork bao buns, and spring rolls... My favorite was the shrimp maki roll... so fresh and delicious. The other apps were tasty as well. For the entrees we had the Udon noodle soup with shrimp tempura, and the Shrimp tempura rice bowl. I'm told the soup had a great flavor and I enjoyed my Shrimp tempura as well... so light and crisp with great flavor. Service was excellent and everyone was very friendly. We even got to meet the owners Joe and Annie who stopped by our table for a brief chat to see how everything was. Good not so "traditional" Ramen shop. Definitely a great place to come to especially if you have a mixed crowd as there's tons on the menu to please everyone. I got the beef noodles which was great. My review is strictly based on takeout. I ordered my food over the phone. The person who answered was very nice. Dan Zai's Ramen and Sushi House has a lot to choose from. Dan Zai means Shoilder Pole in Taiwanese. This is in reference to Southern Taiwanese street vendors, who long ago, carried baskets containing noodles using a shoulder pole. I ordered two orders of the Duck Bao Buns, and two orders of the Poke Hawaiian Combo Bowl- Fresh cubed tuna and salmon, avocado, edamame, cucumber,Nori, ( dried seaweed)) wet seaweed, corn, lettuce, masago, and island soy. The fish was fresh and the combo was tasty. The dipping sauce was so delicious and alittle spicy. I used the sauce on both the Hawaiian combo bowl and the Duck Bao Buns. My daughter's friend ordered the Chicken Ramen Bowl. He added extra chicken and extra noodles no veggies, and a hard boiled egg. The broth he chose was Tonkotsu- pork marrow base. We were seated promptly with the menu and followed with utensils, and 4 glasses of water. Here's what we ordered for dinner: Appertizers: Scallion pancask wrap with beef - surprisingly delicious. Wonton - not what I expected, not the red chili oil kind, but with peanut sauce, it has a nice kick of nice spiciness at the end. Soup dumpling - OK, soup was good, but half the dumpling's wrapper/dough broke when we tried to lift it onto the spoon. The sauce was ok with fresh julienned ginger, but probably better with the black aged vinegar. Main Courses/Noodle soup: Ramen with Pork Tonkatsu (Tonkatsu soup base) - soup/broth is very good, the char-siu (pork slices) were tasty. Taiwanese Style Beef Noodle Soup - Best one I have had in year, the soup broth was rich yet light and the beef was five-spiced marinated slices and melted in your mouth. Shrimp Tempura Bowl - it was an ok dish. Overall, a great dinner experience, service + food were all good. If I visit the area again, I'll pay it another visit. read more

Returned to Dan Zai In December 2019 and saw they had updated their menu with more items that are scrumptious and had been wanted by customers for a while. The decor is always improving and they also just opened their banquet hall for large parties (an expansion.) no doubt the owners care very much about the restaurant and have great experience in making good food in a comfortable atmosphere. The sushi is always fresh as tHe owner said she gets her fish every three days. The owner is always there working hard but making sure everyone is satisfied. She's a short Asian lady with a short hair cut. Her husband also works with her and is a tall Portuguese(?) man, pepper hair. They work hard together sometimes on the weekend greeting guests and going around even waiting tables. I've seen the husband at the counter wrapping chopsticks into napkins one time lol. The food is very great and unique as it is Taiwan-based with flares from other cuisines, Japanese, Korean, Hawaiian (the poké bowls), etc. Their monthly specials are always really good, changing with the season. Had a creamy pumpkin soup in October that was so good, they don't carry the pumpkin soup anymore but like I said, good specials showcasing something unique from Taiwan or other. Their ramen is also good, not great or the best but for this area which is lacking in any real authentic ramen noodle shops, it'll do for those needing a bowl of hot noodle soup (and much better than Yong Kang Street in Bridgewater.) Was here with my wife a few weeks ago. I order some sushi and my wife order some dim sum items. One of her item did not taste fresh. The sushi was a just average, nothing special. I would say a little bit less than average especially when you eat a lot of sushi. We told one of the waiter about one of the dim sum dish that didn't seem to taste right. Instead of listening to the customer. Seem to go back and forth. Our point was to inform them to let them know. We didn't mind not paying. Incredible restaurant with good service! The ramen was delicious with a large portion of meat. The steam buns were soft with a crunchy peanut sauce, and the duck was tender and delicious. Another awesome addition to Somerset county! Name another spot within a 25 mile radius that offers bangin' ramen, poke, and soup dumplings - ya just can't. Ramen seems to be what they're best known for, but their soup dumplings and poke bowls are winners in my book too. If you're not enticed by any of these, there's also sushi, hibachi, rice bowls, bubble tea, and some other dim sum goodies. Yeah, they covered all the bases. Soup noods are kinda my thang so here's the breakdown - the seafood and pork tonkatsu ramen are pretty darn good. It's the broth that defines a ramen bowl's flavors and I'm giving both the spicy miso and tonkotsu broth a thumbs up. The spicy miso could be a little spicier but the tonkotsu was both rich and creamy with depths of pork flavor, exactly how it should be. Paired with al dente ramen noodles, a perfect soft boiled egg, nori + wakame, and a generous amount of protein - that's how you win my approval. Definitely come here to get your ramen fix. In case you were looking, this is the only spot near Bridgewater that offers poke bowls. Lucky for me, these bad boys were fresh to def so I'll be back for them again. A great choice for when you're not looking to be drenched in sweat from eating steamy, hot soup noodles. When it comes to attention to detail - DZ nails it. The interior is well-lit and creatively decorated with wall art and soup noodle bowls hanging from the ceiling and the walls. LOCATION - Inside of a plaza with plenty of parking, easy to find with its huge sign off of Rt 22. We went to Dan Zai for the first time just a few days ago. It was our first time going to a "noodle house" and we really enjoyed it! We started coconut shrimp and steamed vegetable dumplings. I had never had homemade steamed dumplings in my life, and I thought they were excellent! My wife then ordered a few sushi rolls for her entrée, and they were great - nothing exotic: vegetable rolls and a shrimp tempura roll. I ordered a bowl of noodles... I don't remember the name, but I took the waitresses suggestion and it was the first one on the list; it had pork in it, and it was great! The broth was really rich, and it reminded me of pho. I am very happy that this restaurant just opened up, and I will certainly return because we like sushi we like noodles and everything was really good. New restaurant as of 2ish months ago. Menu touches upon every asian-american cusine imaginable (ramen, sushu, dimsum, beef noodle, boba). Always a line, but being a big place (it is central NJ after all), its never too long. So whats good here? The service. It is not normal to have such solid polite wait staff, and the management checking in with everyone during their meal (for an asian run place). I was impressed, and this is what bumped this from a 3 to a 4. Tuna Tartare was deliciously covered in some wasabi mayo and green roe-like toppings. Salt & Pepper chicken was nicely fried and topped with light seasoning, and not too msg-y. Fiances lychee boba wasn't bad. And we are boba snobs. The disappointments were the main dishes. Beef Noodle Soup, like everyone else here, was NOT the slightly spicy, very umami, tender noodles you would hope. Probably the exact opposite. Wonton Noodle Soup, also had a light broth, which was fitting for this particular entree. Water dumplings were good, but it was the same manufactured (and too much of ) noodles as the beef noodle above ^... aka NOT the kind I like. Its usually alot thinner so its not complete carb overload. My recommendation is to figure out top 10 most ordered items, and update the recipes for those to ensure they are higher quality and more authentic to keep both asian & non asian patrons coming back.
