I had my first swim assessment today. John is just terrific. I never learned proper swimming form which made my swimming exhausting at best. As I have gotten older I have developed some fears about getting water up my nose. And putting my face in the water. In one assessment, John gave me terrific pointers for why I was taking in water and what to do if I did. He took me back to basics which showed me what my body will naturally do in water in different positions. Knowing how my body naturally will react when I will just relax LOL was amazing, freeing, and made being in the water great fun again. We are at beginning stages of proper form but I already have tons more confidence and am excited to do my "homework" so I can go back for more lessons! I was super hopeful that lessons at the age of 54 would be helpful, but in just one 30 minute session John exceeded my greatest expectations. Looking forward to all that I can learn from this super instructor!

On top of that when your kids get sick usually the rest of the house gets sick. My son missed 4 classes and you're only allowed two makes up which you have to pay for additionally. So now I'm out $150 when it's already $180 a month for the semester. I also never received my referral even after the manager repeated it to me for assurance. Shame on me for not reading the absence policies. I probably wouldn't have signed up while my son is so young and I'm a single parent so if I'm sick there is no one else to take him. And we have no family here. Which is not the schools fault I'm just saying it's hard to make it to every single class and only allowed two make ups isn't fair. On top of that I have two make up credits and every time I try to schedule it doesn't give me any options. I called and left a voicemail for help. No one has returned my call. And if I get a response to this review to email someone about my concerns, that is the wrong answer. You should look up my account and call me. You have no problem calling me to see how I'm enjoying class. You should at least call me to help resolve these issues. I understand your teachers have to be paid for their time but parents shouldn't be penalized for taking care of their sick kiddos and not sharing their germs with everyone else. Someone needs to rework this structure so this isn't an issue.

After month 4 we wondered why they didn't move up a level, were reassured it was normal, so we waited more months, still no testing to even see if they were ready. Then the instructors kept changing and we realized they were teaching our kids the same stuff they learned on day one every time they changed instructors for the class. Turns out they "weren't keeping track" of what the kids knew and after 10 months and $3,500, our kids still can't tread water on their own and were never tested to move up to level 2. They told us the kids "lacked confidence in the skills" when they've had 20 hours of swim time now and just weren't even taught the basics of basics here. They only let you unenroll via text that they ignore you on and then demand 30 days to unenroll you which is another $340. This place is a mess of mismanagement and poor safety. After 10 months my kids should know something.

I have decided to update my review of the Swim Academy (and the JCC) based on recent events which…read moreresulted in our family rejoining the swim academy. Shortly after my initial review, the JCC replaced a key leadership position in the aquatics department. We decided given the change that we would be open to coming back and we have been very pleased upon our return. Key changes we have noticed are : - Instructors are consistently showing up - only 1 substitute so far and it was communicated in advance and the reason for their absence. - The instructors appear to be very focused in the water on the kids the entire time. No more talk / complaining about JCC politics or employer dramas that was taking away from instruction - time in the water - this was a big one. We were consistently only getting about 75% of the instruction time that we paid for. My kids are in the water 5 minutes before their lesson and ready to go. If the instructor is 3 minutes late to start, they should stay 3 minutes extra. This is currently happening, as it should. We appreciate the changes made from the top-down and I wanted to make sure that my review reflected this effort(s) being made.
