The restaurant Seehof has a pretty unassuming entrance in a little street, but its terrace provides stunning views over Bodensee, or Lake Constance as its actual name is in English. I was visiting Friedrichshafen for just about a day and wanted to have a nice meal by the water. I quickly came across a few positive reviews of Seehof and decided to go there. Later, a local friend told me, that many people who live in Friedrichshafen do not yet know about this great little gem, so it is surprisingly still kind of an insider tip. When I walked in on a Sunday around noon, the restaurant was not very busy and I chose probably the table with the best view over the water. I was quickly handed the menu and browsed through the different items. I missed a Riesling on the wine list. It turns out that the Müller-Thurgau white wine I had ordered was great and fresh and soon I forgot that there was no Riesling on the menu. Also, I would recommend asking for a tap water instead of bottled water, because this very lake is the source of excellent drinking water. I started right with a main and they were very friendly and flexible, so I could customise my order and go off-menu. I went with pork tenderloin and home-made spätzle with gravy. It came with a little starter of salad with quite a bit vinegar - that is how they do it in the area, but I am not a big fan of these salads. For many people, the tenderloin would have been the main ingredient of the dish. Not for me - without a question, the grated spätzle were excellent and the true star. The gravy was nice and tangy, although perhaps a little bit fatty. The pieces of pork tenderloin were soft and delicious. For dessert, I had a mousse au chocolat which was alright, but it did not wow me as the spätzle did. After becoming used to London food prices, I was surprised when I saw the bill. It was a very reasonable price for good food, great wine and a perfect view in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Overall, I can only recommend Seehof. If you get a front-row table in the sun, it's worth to go for the view alone. Accompanied by at least a Müller-Thurgau to keep you cool so you can enjoy the view a bit longer.

Atmosphere: You can't ask for better views outside of the restaurant. It is situated on a sloping hill, so you get an idyllic scene of the valley from the outside of the restaurant. Inside, the windows are on the small side, so the outstanding views are lost. The restaurant has two floors; the downstairs area looks very posh with soft lighting and the upstairs has more of a barn decor, which is a little outdated. The tables are spaced out well and decorated simply and nicely with linen tablecloths. Staff: For both the wedding and the second dinner, my staff were attentive and excellent. Seldom was there an empty glass or lull in empty plates being cleared and new food arriving. For our second dinner, we had to split a bill across several people, but the woman serving our table was very efficient in splitting up the bill. Overall, the staff were a delight. Food and Drinks: Along with the view, the food is the reason to visit Restaurant Gaden. For the second meal, I had the pumpkin soup, which was balanced and good, and a simple garden salad with dressing on the side. The salad lettuces were crisp and vibrant - very refreshing. What was outstanding was the hay soup. My table was really curious what this soup would entail, so we shared a bowl of the soup. It was a creamy homogeneous soup with hints of earthiness from the hay. I loved this soup - from its presentation on a bed of hay to the actual flavor. I also got to taste my friend's platter of venison sausage and roesti. The roesti was great, but the venison sausage was very salty. It would be have been better if it was shared between two people with an additional salad on the side. Conclusion: If you are traveling in this area, this restaurant would be a great place to visit - especially after you have taken a long hike in the area. There is a cool hiking trail that includes musical instrument installations. I recommend doing that tour and then stopping here for a nice dinner.
