I've been looking for a roadside stand like this since I moved to NC 6+ years ago, and I think I've finally found it. Back in NY and NoVA, we had roadside stands like this all over the place, so FINALLY, I can say I've found one in NC. The pumpkin Pie Train wreck was pretty good! My only complaint - closing on a holiday like Labor Day - it took a second trip out here to actually get to enjoy it. I came here with my 2-year-old niece and we loved the ice cream! It truly is a little Train Depot building and is located on a hill on Rogers Road. You can either walk up to the window and order or go through the drive-thru window. The attendants were dressed with train-themed hats and were really friendly. We got the Train Wreck which is the custard with candy bars and flavors mixed in. There are many flavors to choose from and I had the Almond Delight. The portions are very generous and a small was like a large. My niece had a kid's size strawberry and she loved it. I actually found the Dairy Deport in my Citypass book and like unique parlors that are not necessarily chains. They also service milkshakes and custard dipped with chocolate. Ehhhhh. It's ok. It's hard to get into and out if making a left. The ice cream is simple. I ordered a peanut butter sundae with NO whipped cream and cherry. And what I got is in the picture below . I wish I was able to choose chocolate ice cream for my sundae, but I was informed that all sundaes come in vanilla ice cream only. Good customer service and my sundae was excellent! I like that they have drive thru. I ordered strawberry shortcake but the cake tasted old and stale with a weird texture like the end piece on a loaf of bread. I have been once before and got a pineapple sundae that was delicious!! Dairy Depot is now my go to ice cream place in Raleigh. I've driven by this place for two years because there isn't much signage and unfortunately the owner doesn't advertise much if any. Boy oh boy but if the owner did advertise this place would be the busiest place in Raleigh year round. They have the most unique soft serve flavors and it's high quality stuff not your average Dairy Queen ice cream mix in a bag. My favorite flavors so far have been the cake batter and the strawberry. Oh and the huge plus here is that they have a drive thru so no need to get out your car unless you want to. Beware...though Dairy Depot looks charming it is anything but. On two separate visits the staff had turned off the lights and were trying to no longer serve so they could leave early or right at the posted closing time. We had to knock on the window for service and each time the staff acted like we were bothering them. But it gets worse. They may not really have the flavors they advertise. For my raspberry cone it looked like they took a vanilla base and then mixed in a raspberry syrup. The result was not very good. We had the same impression for the butter pecan...that it was "faked". Puppy Cups! Puppy Cups! The Dairy Depot offered my yorkie a puppy cup when we went through the drive thru! How awesome is that? Now as soon as we pull up, she fights to get out of her seat because she has absolutely no shame in begging for her puppy cup! I like this joint. I got the Monkey Sundae. When I first saw it, I knew I couldn't finish it- it was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. Once I started eating it, I just couldn't stop! It was DELICIOUS. Cinnamon Ice cream, with caramel sauce and warm monkey bread on the bottom! Finished it all, on my own. Definitely going back more to try all of the sundaes soon!!
