Service is overall good, we had a bit of an odd, unattentive server for brunch but it could have just been an off day. The food is delicious! We tried all 6 mezze dishes (except tahini) and all were uniquely tasty. My favorite was the labaneh, my family loved the chicken pate. It's served with a flatbread, but we chose to order a Jerusalem bagel, as well. The bagel was my favorite- it was so soft and flirty inside and crisp outside! For apps, we had the crispy cauliflower, shishkabarak, and the sabich flatbread. All were excellent, and it's hard to pick a favorite, but I'd go with the flatbread. The flavors are excellent and the soft boiled egg with arugula were a great touch. We shared 3 entrees: lamb, harissa chicken, and branzino. My personal favorite was the branzino. It comes with this great lemon sauce that works well with the fish. The harissa BBQ chicken comes with a delicious sauce and really great mashed potatoes. My family loved the lamb most. For dessert, we ordered the labaneh cheesecake (waiters rec). It was definitely our favorite dessert. It's so unique and the pecan crust is amazing. The lemon tart was also excellent- perfectly tart and not too sweet. We were celebrating a birthday and the waiter brought out a silan on the house. The food was incredible, ambiance is nice but the service was subpar and borderline rude. We arrived at 7:01pm for a 6:45pm reservation. Upon checking in, the receptionist told us that the 15-minute grace period has passed and we cannot be seated. While I understand NYC restaurants, especially the popular ones, are busy, it didn't make sense to not seat us when there were clearly tables available and we were one minute passed our grace period. Slightly outrageous, no? Anyways, we eventually got seated. Even though I did not appreciate the passive aggressive attitude of the receptionist, the rest of the staff were quite wonderful and attentive. The food was most definitely delicious! We had the following orders: Mezze: 3 mezzo sampler with Japanese eggplant, marinated beets, and sassy chicken liver mousse. The bread that comes with the mezzo was especially soft and flavorful. Shishbarak: have read many reviews about this dish and it did not disappoint! Really liked the yogurt and the spicy herb sauce. Flash fired cauliflower: didn't stand out but still delicious. Crispy roasted lamb: must-try dish from Dagon! The skin is crispy and the lamb is juicy and tender. Comes with a mix of wild rice/dates/walnuts serviced underneath the lamb. read more

We were excited to try Dagon for dinner. We had selected 3 items from the mezze. The tomato dip & eggplant was tasty but the beets had a glob of horseradish sauce not mixed it. I didn't realize till I took a bite & I did not enjoy it. The bread was vey fresh & good. We ordered lemonade, didn't feel like alcohol. The lemonade was $9.00 a glass which I thought was pricey. My husband had the chicken schnitzel & I had the daurade fish. The schnitzel was prepared well but $31.00 is a bit high in my opinion. The fish was on a bed of an overly lemony sauce served with thin limp asparagus & thin roasted potatoes than got soggy from the sauce. It was fine but not very memorable. All in all service was good. Dishes are brought very quickly. I guess they want to turn table. Didn't stay for dessert. So I don't think we will return as there are other Mediterranean places that far exceed Dagon. read more

I am so happy this restaurant opened featuring dishes I've never seen or heard of before- and they're quite tasty! I have only tried the brunch items so far and hope to try the dinner menu soon. The breads here are amazing! The flatbread is offered with the mezze and is included with some of the offerings however may arrive in different lengths. Whichever shape or size bread you get, you can't get enough of it. Just leave room for the plethora of fantastic salads, entrees, and small plates. I've tried almost the entire brunch menu and honestly could go through the menu again and feel just as impressed and satisfied as my first experience here. If I had to limit my order, I would get the kubaneh again as well as the Israeli salad to start; the shishbarak; and silan... over and over again.. and any of the egg dishes. This is of course in addition to the mezze and breads. The restaurant by the way is spacious and beautifully, tastefully, colorfully decorated. An absolute neighborhood gem! Dined here on the recommendation of a friend, and it did not disappoint. We started with three of the mezze, the spicy feta, tahina, and marinated beets (with crispy beef tongue!). They were served on a tower with the three mezze at the bottom, and a lovely bread on the top to dip with. All three were incredibly flavorful, can't wait to try out the others, and the small plates! For entrees I had to have the crispy roasted lamb, which was highly recommended by said friend, and my partner had the whole roasted black bass. Both dishes were fabulous! The lamb portion was very generous, intensely flavorful, and absolutely lived up to the "crispy" moniker. Loved the cocktails, I had the PersianNegroni and Philip had the Mediterranean GnT! The service was excellent, thank you Rahima! In addition to great service throughout the meal, she suggested a wine pairing for my lamb dish that was so spot on. The ambiance was pleasant and the decor calming and hip at the same time. The bar area looks great, and it would be lovely to sit there and have a few small plates, cocktails, and conversation. Nothing but accolades for this delightful restaurant. I'd been searching for a good Israeli/Middle East spot and found it in the UWS on Broadway. I made a reservation for outdoor dining, but as no one was yet outside, the space wasn't too warm, and we didn't want to risk being cold. The inside space is ample, and the hostess led us from a front room with many tables to a small set of stairs to a cozy and quite comfortable space. Although not on the menu, the bar tender made delicious sidecar cocktails, beautifully frosted with sugar. The "chamin" brisket shakshuka was flavorful, with tender meat and nicely spiced chickpeas. As required, the eggs were cooked to perfection: firm white with solid yet tender yolks. The burger was cooked to have a charred outside and a light pink interior. Arriving with all sorts of extras, especially Moroccan pickles that added a "zing," the burger was satisfying and filling. The restaurant is busy with UWS families with strollers and small kids, yet the waitstaff is adept as moving through the space and thoughtfully attentive. Nothing "wowed" us from the desert menu, thus the four stars. The offerings weren't original and didn't speak to the unique take on food presented on the menu. That was fine, though, because we were sufficiently full from our meals. I will certainly return to try other options. read more

The lamb was pull off the bone tender and paired amazingly with the black rice. The flavoring was great, it didn't taste excessively gamey. The food was absolutely incredible At this cute, new, Mediterranean tapas joint. The humus and freshly baked bread was some of the best I've ever had. Our drinks were also quite good. I had a citrus spritzer that started off good, and got better as I drank it! The service was a tad slow, the tables just slightly too close together, the music just slightly too loud (we sat outside), and the prices just slightly too high (is that inflation, though? A friend recommended Dagon for a late spring dinner, and it was a great selection! We sat outdoors, and given my friend's familiarity with the restaurant, I was eager to see what choices she would recommend. We ended up sharing a few dishes including the marinated beets, fattoush, and shisbarak. The beets provided an interesting contrast with the crispy beef tongue and the tender beets; as a person who is not the biggest beet fan, I thought this was an enjoyable small plate. The fattoush was a refreshing salad, with the pita chips and light vinaigrette melding well with the tomato, radish, and herbs. This restaurant is just simply delicious. I am hoping to try almost every single dish on their menu but I am only a quarter through. The kubahen and the shishbarak is a must every time I dine at this restaurant. Their Labneh is delicious with the flat bread (or anything). Finally, I had the octopus and it was cooked to perfection. The sauce paired with it was something beyond my wildest dreams and it was fantastic! The crudo, yum! Unfortunately, the restaurant is not cheap or average price wise. The dishes that are considered "small" range from $20-$30! Entrees averages around $40. So if you are looking for great food and good ambiance, this is a nice place to indulge. You can also take advantage of their prefix specials if you are into dessert (although it's a limited menu). This restaurant deserves 5 stars for the food. But unfortunately I give it a 4 (no option for a 4.5) because of the price. Also, their portion can be a bit more generous specially with the fish. They have an extensive wine list and the staff is very attentive. Now onto the food! We started off on the messer tower which was really good but know the small portion you will be getting. Nonetheless would highly recommend it since it comes with this amazing bread. I would skip over the hummus (despite being a hummus lover) and the other Appetizers - nothing amazing and very very small. Wow, I'm sorry to have discovered Dagon so late in the game! How have I passed by this place a gazillion times and never stopped by?! We visited Dagon for brunch. The weather was nice, so we opted to dine al fresco. The little shed is nice. We started off with flatbread and whipped eggplant, which was very, very tasty. The eggplant was creamy and delicious and the flatbread was slightly crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and so perfectly warm. I've been anti-egg recently, so I was a little hesitant to order the zucchini frittata, but it was fabulous. The texture was perfect and the labneh provides a nice contrast. The potatoes were perfect. I can't wait to return! read more

I arrived for my 6:30 reservation and was told I had to wait for my full party to arrive to grab a table, I sat by the bar - the restaurant was pretty empty, upon my party arriving we were sat in the worst seat of the restaurant in the corner upon entering. After we asked for a new seat they then moved us by the windows and there was a number of flies attacking us, we asked to change tables and was told by our server that we'd have to go see the host. A manager finally came over to us and guided us to a new table. Just odd what the issue was when we had a reservation and the restaurant was half empty on a Wednesday evening. Terrific food, beautiful atmosphere. Holding back on the stars mainly from poor communication from the server. We ordered a hummus dish that usually comes with a flat bread. We asked if we there was a way to get some veggies instead of bread because of my wife's gluten allergy . Server said sure- we can bring a crudite (veg assortment). Sounds great, and I said I can eat gluten. So they brought the crudite, and also a flatbread both were lovely and delicious. The problem is the server never said that the crudite was an extra menu item, not just simply a substitute for half the bread. And it wasn't just an extra five dollars, it was an extra $11. i'm sure some people don't notice a price difference like that when they get their bill, but a simple courtesy to let us know this was going to be a significant extra charge is what I would expect of good service. The other slight criticism was that the restaurant was pretty cold inside on a winter night. I love eating out in a warm cozy restaurant during winter and this didn't deliver. read more

My wife and I picked this place on a whim for a weekend brunch. We got a table for 1030am, not realizing that that's when they open! Any boy was it a treat. We ordered a 3 plate mezze to start, and shared the Merguez benedict after. For the mezze, we got the tehina (very very very good tehina), the whipped eggplant (very fluffy babaganoush with a lemon butter, delicious!), and the highlight was the chicken liver mousse, which also came with honey. And another highlight was that these three dishes came with a long flatbread, which was incredible. Fluffy, doughy, yum! It was so good we got another. The merguez benedict was also terrific - lamb sausage with poached eggs over zaatar spiced cornbread. I should also add that before the meal they bring out a basket of baked goods, including the aforementioned cornbread, but also rolls, and chocolate croissants! This place has me at speechless and if you knew me, you'd know that's an awesome accomplishment! Nearly everything I've had here have cast a spell on me. The only exception is the Jerusalem bagel but that's only because the rest of their bread offerings are so top notch. We started off with choosing 3 mezze dips and we went with spicy feta, Tahina, and Muhamarra. This comes with a small baguette and veggies, i do wish that there was a larger piece of bread since it was so small you only get a couple bites out of it with lots of dip left. We also got the charred Octopus, this was also really good but a very small portion so not great for sharing. For my main i got the special which was the crab Schnitzel, this was amazing i wish this was part of the main menu i would get it every time. wow!! is all I have to say I had an amazing experience from start to finish and everything in the menu was delectable, fresh and with so many flavors bursting at once. I went with two friends and we ordered a few starters, The kebaneh bread (wowwwww made by baby Jesus himself), some mezzo loved the red pepper hummus with almonds, tuna crude, and the grilled octopus ( sauce a bit spicy) A few rounds of their mezcal margarita and for entrees we went with lamb, salmon, and sea bass, Sea bass being the top winner, we added mashed potatoes on the side and finish off with the Lisan dessert not sure if that's the correct spelling but very interesting choice of dessert and very good. Tried it for a Saturday brunch, fairly early so before the midday crunch. My daughter had actually put the reservation in for the wrong date, but they were very accommodating. The service only got better from there. Bright clean modern bistro style ambience with a really stylish floor tiling throughout the seating area. Impeccable table service without having an overt presence, but the table was cleaned off between each course without it seeming intrusive. There was not a component of our meal that we were unsatisfied with...starting with the drinks and the mezze appetizers. I had a bitter citrus Spritzer, which was very refreshing and not bitter. I could've had three more...my wife and daughter had the eastern Mediterranean Bloody Marys made with Arak and the rim seasoned with Za'atar. They loved them. I tolerated them, but full disclosure...I don't like Bloodies or tomato/ vegetable juice in general or licorice! Somehow, the mix of the tomato juice with the Arak and the za'atar kind of neutralized the two disliked flavors into something that I could have drank at least one of. We chose the option of three mezze with "flatbread". First the "flatbread" which isn't like any flatbread I've ever had...it's better...hot yeasty loaves topped with a brushing of I think, olive oil, and za'atar and sea salt flakes. HOT and delicious...burn your fingers hot. We chose whipped eggplant, Moroccan carrots, and a chicken liver mousse with date syrup. They were all well received and the mousse was interesting in a good way, a really sublime silky liver flavor. For our entrees we went with the zucchini frittata, the shakshuka and the chicken schnitze, which came with Israeli salad and pickles, tahini and date syrup and mashed potatoes. They were all pretty good, but not exceptional. For dessert we had the malabi, because we had it for dessert a few times in Israel. ::Insert Drooly Blissed Out Emoji:: Dagon has been one of my favorite dining experiences in a long while. I came with a party of 8 and luckily, got to try just about everything on the menu. The way it should be! I am still dreaming of these dishes. Our waiter, Ann, suggested that we start with the 6 mezzes. We were eating with some vegetarians, so we opted for everything but the chicken liver mousse. (We'll definitely try this next time!) We didn't realize the marinated beets came with beef tongue, however knowing that we had a vegetarian in our midst, Ann made the wise decision to have the kitchen leave the crispy beef tongue on the side. This was one of my favorite dishes. The beets were delicious with a little horseradish zing and a crunchy element. I even was brave and tried the crispy beef tongue. It was delicious! My fave of the 6 mezzes. The whipped eggplant was delightful with a real tart kick from the preserved lemon. From there, we moved on to some small plates. We tried the cauliflower (a must), the hummus - a classic that was elevated by the soft boiled egg and tomato jam. The Tunisian cigar with ground lamb was excellent. We split it into several pieces to share with the entire table. (It's only one cigar per order.) We were really excited to try the shishbarak, which are little lebanese mushroom dumplings in yogurt sauce. These were light and delicious. One of the highlights of the meal was the yellowfin tuna crudo. It's served with strawberry, lime, truffle, and pickled rhubarb. It was a symphony of flavors that worked beautifully with one another! The flatbread here is excellent. It all seems to come out of the oven fresh. We had one or two pieces that came with the mezzes, one that came with the hummus, but we added another piece for our table of 8. Keep that in mind if you love to dip, order accordingly. Salad-wise, we ordered two. We had the Israeli salad, which was traditional and tasty. We also tried the Levantine Caesar salad. It comes with anchovy tempura. I didn't notice any pieces of anchovy, but the dressing itself is very fish-flavor-forward. Be aware of that if you don't love that flavor. Imagine after all that food, we still ordered entrees! I got to try a bit of the lamb dish, which was delicious. My husband had the dry aged beef kebabs. He loved them and was very disappointed that he had to share with folx. (I still didn't get to try it.) My side of the table ordered the pan roasted scallops and the sabich flatbread. You get two scallops per order, but they rested atop a pile of watermelon, lime, arak, pistachio, and basil. So, so, so delicious! The sabich was also delicious. It was a huge portion! This dish even converted my veggie hating husband into a believer, as I watched him eat a whole piece of this. In terms of drinks and desserts, they paled in comparison to the actual meal. I had a mint lemonade that was lovely, but others were not impressed with their drinks, describing them as just ok. My prayers have been answered: a new restaurant has opened on the Upper West Side that can rival its counterparts downtown. Dagon is not just "good for the UWS" (i.e., where we tolerate impressively average cuisine despite paying West Village prices), it is good, period. I live steps away from Dagon and have seen it evolve from its infancy and boy, is she a stunner! Every morning when I'd walk my pup, I'd peek into the windows and wonder what sort of culinary secrets were being passed around. I did this for several months before finally taking the plunge and making a reservation here, despite getting bombarded with rave reviews from all of my fellow Upper West Siders. One friend, a fellow foodie, has come here eight or nine times already and can probably recite the menu in his sleep. Now that I've finally dined here, I can report *first-hand* that Dagon is a special place and is, at least at this point, not overhyped. Great ambience, amazing food and excellent service. Oh, and when I walk my pup for her nighttime pee at 11pm, there are *still* people in here. And now I get it: we didn't want to leave either. We came here at 8:15pm on a Saturday night. I'm pretty sure it was the first or second night back to full-capacity dining, which was both overwhelming and a treat. We ended up opting to sit at the bar -- something we haven't done in over a year -- and it was delightful. The space itself is beautiful and well-decorated, and so very lively. I always enjoy sitting at the bar because I both get to watch drinks get made as well as chat with the bartenders. Everyone who works here is so cheerful and friendly, so it was a great time. Dagon has some really fun cocktails. We each tried two, and all were delicious. I first had the Mediterranean G+T (gin, cucumber, citrus, fresh botanicals, london essence rosemary tonic), which was refreshing and beautiful in presentation. My fiancé had the Koshmopolitan (citrus vodka, manischewitz concord, amaro montenegro, lime, burnt orange), which tasted like Passover but a million times better. The Manischewitz flavor is prominent, so keep that in mind. I then switched to the Sahara Old Fashioned (fig-infused bourbon, silan, walnut bitters, angostura ice, orange oil), which was rich and so smooth. My fiancé isn't a big fan of spirit-forward drinks but he loved it. He got the RIMONegroni (gin, dolin rouge, pomegranate, campari dust) for his second drink, which was solid. The campari dust is a special touch. Food-wise, Dagon really has it all. Authentic, creative and delicious Israeli bites. Sharing is the way to go, as the small plates are many. There's a great variety here and an overwhelming amount to choose from. Go with a large party of come back several times, as we plan to do. I already have our order ready to go for our next trip here. Eats, below: Mezze (three for $24) (1) Marinated Beets w/ horseradish yogurt, chickpeas, crispy beef tongue: A+ Fresh and delicious, always nice to add some sort of yogurt/dairy and something crunchy for texture when serving beet salad. The crispy beef tongue was a unique touch. (2) Moroccan Carrots w/ harissa, lemon, fresh herbs: A Simple but delicious, especially if you love harissa. A small serving but that's what a mezze should be. (3) Muhamarra (spicy roasted red pepper and almond dip): A+ I had never heard of muhamarra prior to dining here, despite trying mezzes at a number of different Mediterranean spots. I tried this based off of a recommendation and it was well-received. Really tasty and loved the almonds for texture. Shishbarak: A+ So it seems this is the star at Dagon, and for good reason. Pillowy, fluffy, rich and decadent. Only four little dumplings -- a few more an you'd fill up too quickly, so the portion was fine for me. The sauce was heavenly, seasoned beautifully. Not overhyped whatsoever. Yellowfin Tuna Crudo w/ strawberry, lime, truffle, pickled rhubarb: A- Straightforward, very fresh, but not thrilling. Definitely nice to have something light and raw in our second course to balance out the dumplings, but not the highlight. Crispy Roasted Lamb w/ cucumbers, dates, wild rice, walnuts, shawarma spice: A+ Okay now this was some preparation. Don't be too intimidated: a massive hunk of meat will arrive but much of it is bone (that said, there's still a serious amount of meat there -- just not as much as it may seem upon first glance). Executed perfectly and the accompaniments beneath the lamb were absolutely outstanding. The rice, dates, walnuts and shawarma were insanely flavorful on their own and I would've just ordered those on their own as a separate plate. Finally, because we were celebrating a special occasion, Dagon comp'ed us their signature Silan (date molasses, tahini mousse, rice crispies, spiced milk ice cream, shredded halva), despite us not really having room for dessert by the end. I had way more than I planned to, because it was just mind-blowing. I've never had a dessert like this. read more
