Cool new space in Gavea mall, took over the kids toy store in the back right corner of the first floor. I like this place better than the Ipanema branch because first of all, it's in a much bigger mall, so there's more to do there. Secondly, the space of the store is larger and also much more comfortable. There's more barber chairs, the decor is nice, they have a bar where people can sit while they serve you a beer or water or cafe. They also have a couch and couple of armchairs which are convenient to wait in. They also have a much bigger beer selection and even carry their own chopp which was a tasty IPA today. I was able to get on the wifi, which was faster than the Gavea shopping network, while I waited for yelper Reese to get his haircut. He was quite satisfied with his haircut, saying it was the best he's got in Rio, from barber Leo with the big beard. read more

I've been looking in Rio for a good, classic barber and hadn't had much luck. Even the ones that the concierge at our hotel, the Copacabana Palace, recommended were pretty gruesome and not somewhere I'd want to go. So I pretty much decided to wait until I got back to Manhattan to get a haircut and beard trim. Then today, after visiting the Botanical Garden, we came across D.O.N. - exactly what I was looking for! Classic cool barber shop with wide comfortable chairs and a really cool atmosphere. The guy who greeted us at the door couldn't have been nicer or made us feel more at home. He was also able to translate for me. The barber was equally as nice and did an excellent job. Having been to the branch in Ipanema, I at least knew what to expect here. The layout and design of the barber shop is spacious and stylish, definitely bigger than the Ipanema store. When we went it was empty, but even if all the chairs had been full there still would have been room for people to wait around. Aside from style, I also got the best cut I have had here in Rio. I always bring a photo to help describe how I want it, and between that and some clarification with the barber, it turned out exactly how I imagined. I give the barber Leo (not sure on spelling) a lot of credit in this regard. He was very friendly and made sure I got what I wanted. And of course, I have to evaluate the beer. The free chopp that comes with the R$55 haircut is a store made IPA. It's a little more hoppy than a standard IPA in Rio, but I thought it was delicious. In addition to the complimentary chopp, the store also offers a pretty large selection of chilled beers you can enjoy there. I was especially surprised by the amount of Rogue they offered. In all, this is the place to get your haircut if you're in the Leblon/Gavea/Jardim Botanico area. It doesn't hurt that it's inside my favorite mall, Shopping da Gávea, which leaves plenty of options for a post haircut meal or snack. read more
