Rudy has been incredibly helpful in helping me get my O-Day sailboats up and running. He's been able to replace stays, provide correctly sized furling parts, sell me the correctly sized replacement hatch, and so forth. I have never found Rudy to be anything other than cheerful and helpful. He seems to be running a very small business, but he's very well known and respected as a great resource in the ODay and Pearson communities. There are so many questions that get answered with "I'm not sure, you should ask Rudy" that I imagine his phone seldom stops ringing. Anyway, I used the web to look up his number, though it's in my contact list but I'm being lazy today, and when I did, I noticed that he didn't have a lot of Yelp reviews. Friendly, knowledgeable and helpful! I visited during "open house" hours after buying a 73 O'day. I was welcomed into the barn that holds his business, & conversation quickly led to advice on repairing my centerboard. He knew my hull specifics within a couple hundred #, and zeroed in on its unique construction, telling me how that changed almost monthly with early builds. Rudy retrieved vintage CB for me to photo, then copied fact sheets and diagrams. He offered sample rigging so I would protect my tabernacle, then steered me towards a (much) less expensive solution for a block I needed. My small sale $ wouldn't fill a truck with gas, but Rudy was patient w me for almost an hour. He started at O'day 52 years ago and is well past "retirement age," but there's obviously pride in a lifetime of dedication and a desire to share his passion. Don't know what newbies like me or the O'day community will do once Rudy does retire, but I'm super glad he was here for me today! read more

I would like to share my experience with D & R in order to provide a bit of contrast to the earlier review I just read. Rudy and D & R are an invaluable resource to me and my husband in our labor of love - keeping up my older model O'Day. They are courteous and helpful on the phone. I can get advice and direction on a project. Rudy has many kits already made up which will include all the parts for typical projects including all the nuts and bolts, etc., as well as directions. I can call them in an emergency and get a part sent overnight. (Usually arrives next a.m.!) If I am going in in person, I usually call in advance. That way, Rudy can put my order together before I get there. I have learned that if I am going to arrive there late in the day, I am very likely to encounter many other frantic boat owners needing last minute emergency parts simultaneous with the arrival of the late day mail truck. D&R is small in staff, large in inventory, and terrific in meeting all my needs (supplies, directions, and encouragement) as long as I take into consideration this is nearly a one-person shop providing a valuable service in a unique setting. I have owned my O'Day Mariner for about 8 years now and anytime anything funky on it breaks or needs upgrading I go straight to Rudy at D&R. I have never had an issue with this company. Rudy is the best name for the proprietor at D&R Marine, because he is RUDE! He's one of these guys whose found a niche and doesn't have much overhead, so he can afford to be less than helpful. I bought a used boom off him for $300, and he couldn't have been nicer, but when I went back for a smaller item, he first sold me the wrong parts, I didn't have time to go back, so I used them, but still wanted the right parts. When I returned, I didn't even ask for a refund, just wanted to purchase the new items, which he said he had in stock, and after driving 30 minutes to his place, he did not have the parts, and actually told me that he didn't have time to deal with me because he had a UPS order to get out, cause he has a big mail order business! Well I hope he reads this, because I want him to know he's not the only guy who sells boat parts, I got what I needed elsewhere, and cheaper! I will never do business with him again! read more
