I was having a really terrible day so far. Our train from Warnemunde ran seriously late and we…read moremissed our connection to Schwerin. That left us with an hour and 45 minute wait at Rostock. This was over lunchtime, so I ended up getting a doner classic from donerbitz. The very first doner I ever ate was in Germany, so it felt like a bit of returning to the source of it all. I had hoped it'd be good, but I didn't expect it to be one of the best kebabs I've ever eaten. Heck, it might well have been the best once you took into account the quality way the pitta was prepared. Spicing was different, but I often find that in different countries. I think I preferred it to the spicing we get back in London. Sauces were great, although I have no idea what the third one was. Cheap too at only 4 Euros. Excellent lunch, and now I'm in a hugely better mood for the rest of our trip out today!

Obviously pretzels are meant to be the speciality, but I didn't see anyone order one... Most people went for the hot savoury items, so I decided to follow suit, and did that horrible tourist thing of pointing to what I wanted with a mumbled 'bitte'. The signs were handwritten and I don't speak German so didn't know what anything was, but it was clear these were all 'specials' as the pizza and pretzels had proper printed signs. The staff member was surly at best (with everyone - it wasn't because I was a tourist!). The food was warmed a bit (but didn't come out hot) and was quickly passed over. For about €2, I was presented with some sort of bready thing with a twist in the middle, filled with 2 long thin sausages and covered in cheese. It was fine, if a bit dry, and while not hot, wasn't cold either. I could take it or leave it - and in the end, I left at least half of it. If this was a place I passed through every day, I'm sure I'd find a few favourites. I know it's a large chain so at least you know what you're getting (usually...!)

We stopped by here for lunch. It looked pretty busy and I was searching for a clean…read morerestroom...lol. Good news is it had a very clean restroom and it had pretty good food. They had menus in english which made it pretty easy and the host and servers spoke english which was even better. We ordered the specials which included a burger, fries, yogurt and beer or summer drink. We had the local beer and it was pretty good. The burgers were pretty good on a brioche bun and the fries were awesome. Be prepared to take your time. Our server was nice but she took forever to get us our desert and check. It was a good thing we had time to spare. Prices I think were reasonable. They took apple pay which was always nice and easy.

Peter Pane was an okay place to stop for a meal while visiting Rostock. As a tourist walking up…read morethe main shopping street, it seemed like a good choice for a burger and some people watching as it was beautiful outside and seats were available. My friend and I took a table and then took a stroll through the menu, which was in German. This was no big whoop as we had our trusty translation apps on our phones, plus, we were ordering burgers ... not a lot of mystery there. The server came out after a while to get our order and when we spoke in English, he seemed annoyed and grunted that he would get us English menus. Before we could tell him that we didn't need them, he took off and disappeared for a few minutes. (Now, as a tourist, I get that we can be annoying. I work for a major theme park in Orlando, FL ... so believe me, I understand ... its just that I don't grunt in my guests' faces. Also, I didn't know why we deserved a grunt so early on other than communicating in English ... but message received, sir. Message received.) Anywho, we ordered and I got the fig burger with the special grain bun and the "premium" beef, which were both up charges. I also ordered the Ewiges Kind, which were potato fritters sticks with apple-vanilla compote. When the burger came out, it wasn't hot but just kind of warm. It also didn't taste great, especially for "premium" beef. It actually tasted like a beef patty that had been warmed up, so nothing special. The Ewiges Kind were good though! I loved the sweetness of the apple dip, so all was not lost. Overall, the food was just okay. The location is excellent as its in the middle of busy area. There is also free wifi inside the restaurant towards the back but you won't get it outside or just inside the restaurant. They did have excellent restrooms (WC's) downstairs that were a fun design and very clean. The interior of the restaurant was also fun and somewhat themed as a modern forest. So, good on that end! Annnnnnd, there it is. It wasn't bad but it wasn't that good. Average would be the word I would use to describe my food and experience ... from an English speaking tourist's point of view.

The service is very fast at lunch time and the price affordable, up to 6 Euro. In the evenings you can choose from the menu - like burgers, Schnitzel, Wraps, soups, etc. There are also different beverages on the menu like soft drinks, different beer, wine and cocktails. The service could be faster and friendlier sometimes. The design is like a retro living room in the 80's. The tables and chairs are made of old wood. But there are also antique sofas and funny pics on the wall. The food is excellent and they are known for their burgers. A tip from us: they could renovate the restrooms.
